Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to analyze and examine the relationship between busy boards and corporate performance in China.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on a sample of non‐financial listed companies in the Chinese stock market from 2007 to 2010, by defining several measures of busy board, the paper investigates the relationship between busy boards and corporate performance in China.
Findings
The paper finds many busy boards in Chinese listed companies; compared to companies without multiple directorships, the companies with multiple directorships have better corporate performance; the number of multiple directorships in boards should maintain a certain ratio, or the busy boards will be harmful to the corporate performance.
Originality/value
This is the first paper to analyze and examine the impacts of busy boards on firm performance in China directly. The findings are also useful to regulation of limiting the numbers of independent directors seated on other boards.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to improve the hydraulic efficiency without changing the overall dimension. The blade profile optimization design of the aero-centrifugal pump based on the biharmonic equation surrogate model has been studied.
Design/methodology/approach
First of all, Bezier curves and linear function are used to control the annular angle distribution and the stacking angle of blade profile under the MATLAB platform. Grid independence analysis has been studied to find the finest mesh scheme. After the precision comparison of test data and computation fluid dynamics 15 sets of design parameters are carried out as the boundary condition of the biharmonic equation. The efficiency surrogate model of the biharmonic equation is constructed via iteratively solving of a discrete difference equation. The other two surrogate models of response surface model (RSM) and radial basis function neural network surrogate model (RBFNNSM) are compared with the biharmonic equation surrogate model by the standard of modified complex correlation coefficient R2 and root mean square deviation (RSME). Finally, the artificial fish swarm algorithm has been used to find the global optimal design parameters with the objective function of highest efficiency.
Findings
The results show that the design parameters code conversion method can reduce the number of optimization parameters from five to three, makes the design space become a cube, and compared with RSM and RBFNNSM, the biharmonic equation surrogate model has higher precision with R2 is 0.8958, RSME is 0.1382. The final optimum result of AFSA is at the point of [1 −1 −1]. The internal flow field analysis shows that after optimization the outlet relative velocity becomes more uniform and the wake effect has been significantly decreased. The hydraulic efficiency of the optimized pump is about 59.45 per cent increasing 5.4 per cent compared with a prototype pump.
Originality/value
This study developed a new method to optimize the design parameters of aero-centrifugal pump impeller based on biharmonic equation surrogate model, which had a good agreement with experimental values within just 15 sets of the original design. The optimization results shows that the method can improve the hydraulic efficiency significantly.

Abstract
Purpose
Prefabricated building has been widely applied in the construction industry all over the world, which can significantly reduce labor consumption and improve construction efficiency compared with conventional approaches. During the construction of prefabricated buildings, the overall efficiency largely depends on the lifting sequence and path of each prefabricated component. To improve the efficiency and safety of the lifting process, this study proposes a framework for automatically optimizing the lifting path of prefabricated building components using building information modeling (BIM), improved 3D-A* and a physic-informed genetic algorithm (GA).
Design/methodology/approach
Firstly, the industry foundation class (IFC) schema for prefabricated buildings is established to enrich the semantic information of BIM. After extracting corresponding component attributes from BIM, the models of typical prefabricated components and their slings are simplified. Further, the slings and elements’ rotations are considered to build a safety bounding box. Secondly, an efficient 3D-A* is proposed for element path planning by integrating both safety factors and variable step size. Finally, an efficient GA is designed to obtain the optimal lifting sequence that satisfies physical constraints.
Findings
The proposed optimization framework is validated in a physics engine with a pilot project, which enables better understanding. The results show that the framework can intuitively and automatically generate the optimal lifting path for each type of prefabricated building component. Compared with traditional algorithms, the improved path planning algorithm significantly reduces the number of nodes computed by 91.48%, resulting in a notable decrease in search time by 75.68%.
Originality/value
In this study, a prefabricated component path planning framework based on the improved A* algorithm and GA is proposed for the first time. In addition, this study proposes a safety-bounding box that considers the effects of torsion and slinging of components during lifting. The semantic information of IFC for component lifting is enriched by taking into account lifting data such as binding positions, lifting methods, lifting angles and lifting offsets.

Purpose
Twitter is the most widely used platform with an open network; hence, tourists often resort to Twitter to share their travel experiences, satisfaction/dissatisfaction and other opinions. This study is divided into two sections, first to provide a framework for understanding public sentiments through Twitter for tourism insights, second to provide real-time insights of three Indian heritage sites i.e., the Taj Mahal, Red Fort and Golden Temple by extracting 5,000 tweets each (n = 15,000) using Twitter API. Results are interpreted using NRC emotion lexicon and data visualisation using R.
Design/methodology/approach
This study attempts to understand the public sentiment on three globally acclaimed Indian heritage sites, i.e. the Taj Mahal, Red Fort and Golden temple using a step-by-step approach, hence proposing a framework using Twitter analytics. Extensive use of various packages of R programming from the libraries has been done for various purposes such as extraction, processing and analysing the data from Twitter. A total of 15,000 tweets from January 2015 to January 2021 were collected of the three sites using different key words. An exploratory design and data visualisation technique has been used to interpret results.
Findings
After data processing, 12,409 sentiments are extracted. Amongst the three tourists' spots, the greatest number of positive sentiments is for the Taj Mahal and Golden temple with approximately 25% each. While the most negative sentiment can be seen for the Red Fort (17%). Amongst the positive emotions, the maximum joy sentiment (12%) can be seen in the Golden Temple and trust (21%) in the Red Fort. In terms of negative emotions, fear (13%) can be seen in the Red fort. Overall, India's heritage sites have a positive sentiment (20%), which surpasses the negative sentiment (13%). And can be said that the overall polarity is towards positive.
Originality/value
This study provides a framework on how to use Twitter for tourism insights through text mining public sentiments and provides real- time insights from famous Indian heritage sites.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to report case studies conducted in a company in Italy that produces packaging systems, in comparison with a Brazilian company within a similar industrial sector. The paper compares those two cases in terms of quality function deployment (QFD) usage and discusses the lessons learned from the cases.
Design/methodology/approach
Case‐based research was employed. Data were mostly gathered through semi‐structured interviews with engineers and managers involved with product development. Direct observation and archival data were also used to extract more evidence towards triangulation. Then, the aggregation of results was done a posteriori.
Findings
QFD implementation process was found to be similar in both companies but with some differences in terms of managerial aspects of product development, e.g. gathering the voice of customer and a more extensive use of other matrices besides the “house of quality”.
Research limitations/implications
The study was limited in two companies. Although one of the purposes was to analyse if there are contextual differences between those two cases, this study was unable of verifying the context of QFD application. In addition, the study findings are not generalisable to other similar plants.
Practical implications
The research shows the importance of QFD implementation and similarities between the cases, in addition to contributing to application by identifying relevant aspects of its introduction. It enables practitioners to use the findings on factors that should be taken into consideration when applying QFD.
Originality/value
Besides the comparison between two companies, the paper discusses the innovation on QFD projects in one of the companies. In addition, the empirical results found grounding in existing theory to some extent.
