Abstract
Purpose
The implementation of the digital economy has had a considerable influence on the manufacturing industry, and this paper aims to address the important issues of how to capture the opportunities presented by digital innovation and promote the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry, as well as the improvement of quality and efficiency.
Design/methodology/approach
Using panel data from 30 Chinese provinces and cities between 2010 and 2021, this study establishes the panel vector autoregression (PVAR) model and uses impulse response function analysis to evaluate the influence of the digital economy on the high-quality transformation and upgrading of China's small home appliance industry across five dimensions under the digital economy.
Findings
The development of digital infrastructure has not demonstrated a noteworthy capacity for advancing the transformation and upgrading of the small home appliance industry. Furthermore, digital industrialization has exerted a minimal restraining influence on this process. Nevertheless, digital governance has consistently exhibited a substantial impact on facilitating the transformation and upgrading of the small home appliance industry. While both industrial digitization and digital innovation hold significant potential for promoting the transformation and upgrading of the small home appliance industry, their sustainability remains limited.
Practical implications
The organization should logically join independent innovation and open innovation, construct an industrial ecosystem for the profound convergence of the digital economy and compact household appliances, use digital-wise science and technology to empower the establishment of brand effects, strengthen the portrayal of the digital standard framework for the intelligent compact household appliance industry, advance the development of a public stage for computerized administrations in the compact household appliance industry and develop a strategy ecosystem for computerized assets in the compact household appliance industry.
Originality/value
This study offers systematic evidence of the relationship between the digital economy and the development of the small home appliance industry. The results of this research contribute to the literature on the impact of the digital economy on the manufacturing sector and provide a logical explanation for the transformation and upgrading of the small home appliance industry within the context of the digital economy.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to empirically study whether China could achieve strong export market power considering its highly decentralized coke production and trade.
Design/methodology/approach
By using time series data, this paper econometrically estimates the coke export market power with the Hall model; then, through analyzing micro trade data and public policy, tries to explain the co‐existing dilemma of China's highly decentralized coke production/export and its strong market power in the world market; lastly, by using Stigler's survival technique, it explores the optimum size of China's coke production and export.
Findings
The paper finds that the market power of Chinese coke export is quite strong, even if its micro market structure is highly decentralized; the main explanation for the expanding of China's coke export market power comes from its oligopolistic position in the world coke market, its strong industry policy and trade policy restriction. Also it is found that the optimum size in the coke industry should be the market share below 0.5 percent, or in 1‐10 percent, while other market sizes are of diseconomies of scale.
Practical implications
Such findings provide evidence for China's policy adjustment regarding maintaining strong coke export market power, while eliminating economic distortions and negative production externality.
Originality/value
This paper highlights the co‐existing issues of micro competitive structure and nationally oligopolistic position in an industry. This study is the first try to combine market power and economies of scale, through empirical analysis and optimum size estimation, to generate implications for optimal government public policy.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to determine the base position and the largest working area for mobile manipulators. The base position determines the workspace of the mobile manipulator, particularly when the operation mode is intermittent (i.e. the mobile platform stops when the manipulator conducts the task). When the base of the manipulator is in the intersection area of the Base’s Workable Location Spaces (BWLSes), the end effector (EE) can reach all path points. In this study, the intersection line of BWLSes is calculated numerically, and the largest working area is determined using the BWLS concept. The performance of this method is validated with simulations on specific surface segments, such as plane, cylinder and conical surface segments.
Design/methodology/approach
The BWLS is used to determine the largest working area and the base position in which the mobile manipulator can reach all path points with the objective of reducing off-line planning time.
Findings
Without considering the orientation of the EE, the base position and the working area for the mobile manipulator are determined using the BWLS. Compared to other methods, the proposed algorithm is beneficial when the planning problem has six dimensions, ensuring the reachability and stability of the EE.
Originality/value
The algorithm needs no manual configuration, and its performance is investigated for typical surfaces in practical applications.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of internet commonweal characteristics on consumers’ participation willingness, mainly predicated on the stimulus-organism-response model. Furthermore, co-creation value is tested as a mediator of the relationship between internet commonweal characteristics and consumers’ participation willingness, by using the project of Ant Forest issued by Ali-pay as an example.
Design/methodology/approach
An online questionnaire survey was conducted among Ant Forest’s consumers with a final sample of 584 valid data. Moreover, to test the hypotheses in the relationship among latent variables, structural equation model analysis was used in this study.
Findings
The findings show that openness and interactivity as two kinds of characteristics of internet commonweal have positive effect on customers’ co-creation value; while co-creation would mediate the relationship between internet commonweal characteristics and customers’ participation willingness. As a result, more co-creation value would be created between the companies and their customers for higher level of internet commonweal to gain a sustainable image.
Practical implications
Two managerial implications derived in this paper to explain how to manage the internet public welfare platform and how to promote the social public welfare undertakings. In short, consumers’ co-creation value, green value, personal achievement value and social relationship value would be aroused by the internet commonweal characteristics and will finally affect consumers’ participation willingness.
Originality/value
The originality and value in this paper is enriching the importance of customers’ co-creation value in the field of internet commonweal. And demonstrating that openness and interactivity of internet commonweal characteristics would increase customers’ co-creation value.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to test the impact of the soybean rejuvenation plan and the subsidy on farmers' land allocation decisions, which may reference policy adjustment from a micro perspective.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper develops a multi-objective optimized programming model on farm-level, which simulated the land-use changes, as well as the resulting changes in benefits of the rational “typical farm”. The simulation scenarios include changes in subsidy policy and production efficiency, and the baseline scenario was the production status in 2018.
Findings
The results show that an increase in soybean producer subsidy will encourage farmers to allocate more land for soybean planting, which can be considered as a policy tool in promoting soybean production in China. Besides, the effect of subsidy in adjusting soybean acreage for farms is further affected by external conditions such as production technology (such as breeding technology, pesticide and fertilizer application efficiency). Meanwhile, large-scale farms show more significant land adjustments when facing changes in policies and external conditions.
Originality/value
The value of this paper is to simulate the effects of soybean policy and subsidy change on farmers' land-allocation decisions through a multi-objective farmer decision-making model, which provides a micro perspective to understand the implementation effect of the soybean revitalization plan.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to design a global robust and continuous control scheme for the attitude tracking control problem of the reentry vehicle with parameter uncertainties and disturbances.
Design/methodology/approach
First, feedback linearization is applied to the model of reentry vehicle, resulting in three independent uncertain subsystems. Then a new second-order time-varying sliding function is proposed, based on which a continuous second-order time-varying sliding mode control (SOTVSMC) law is proposed for each subsystem. The global robustness and convergence performance of the closed-loop reentry vehicle control system under the proposed control law are proved.
Findings
Simulation is made for a reentry vehicle through the assumption that there is external disturbance to aerodynamic moment and the aerodynamic parameters as well as the atmospheric density are perturbed. The results verify the validity and robustness of the proposed strategy.
Originality/value
The SOTVSMC attitude controller based on feedback linearization is proposed for the reentry vehicle. The advantages of the proposed SOTVSMC are twofold. First, the global second order sliding mode is established, which implies that the closed-loop system is global robust against matched parameter uncertainties and disturbances in reentry. Second, the chattering problem is significantly alleviated.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between the patenting movement and economic growth by analyzing development states and raising possible questions of high‐tech industries in order to provide lessons for policy makers.
Design/methodology/approach
A model of polynomial distribution with lagging effect was applied to patenting data and economic operation data, including revenue from new products.
Findings
Through three grouped investigations, namely: short term, medium term, and long term, it was found that innovation activities significantly influence positive economic growth in high‐tech industries. However, total patent output elasticity (POE) in some high‐tech industries is lower than in non‐high‐tech industries. Among the detailed sectors selected in this study, medical equipment and measuring instruments show higher POE.
Originality/value
This paper focuses on an industry‐level study of the relationship between the patenting movement and economic growth, which has important theoretical and practical significance to promoting high‐tech industry innovation capability and enhancing the technological innovation competitive advantage of China.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to explore the three-way interaction effects among congruence type (proximal vs distal) of nonverbal ad messages, assessment perspective (internal vs external) of verbal ad messages and social distance (close vs faraway) on consumers’ visit intention.
Design/methodology/approach
After developing the four categories of restaurant advertisements and scenarios for each type of social distance, the authors used 780 observations collected from Chinese consumers via the online survey platform Sojump and WeChat. The authors conducted ANOVA to test the hypotheses.
Findings
The results reveal that in proximal congruence situations, consumers who feel a close social distance between themselves and their companions report higher visit intentions when exposed to internal versus external perspective-oriented ad messages; in distal congruence situations, external perspective-oriented ad messages elicit higher intention to visit advertised restaurant when consumers feel a far social distance between themselves and their companions.
Research limitations/implications
Future research can focus on the different categories of messages, such as functional and experiential messages, to find whether similar interaction effects are explored or not.
Practical implications
This paper suggests some practical implications for advertisers to maximize the impact of advertisements on consumers’ behavioral outcomes via combining the different characteristics of nonverbal and verbal messages effectively, especially according to their target consumers’ characteristics.
Originality/value
In the view of the three-way interaction effects, this paper offers a new lens on understanding how advertisements influence consumers’ behavioral outcomes, which could contribute to the advancement of advertisement theories.
