Abstract

Purpose

Recent studies on search-as-learning (SAL) have recognized the significance of identifying users' learning needs as they evolve for acquiring knowledge during the search process. In this study, the authors clarify the extent to which search behaviors reflect the learning outcome and foster the users' knowledge of Chinese art.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted an exploratory-sequential mixed-methods approach using simulated work task situations to collect empirical data. The authors used two types of simulated learning tasks for topics related to painting and antique knowledge. A lot of 25 users participated in this evaluation of digital archives (DAs) at the National Palace Museum (NPM) in Taiwan. For each set of topics, a close-ended task related to lower-level learning goals and an open-ended task related to higher-level learning goals.

Findings

The learning criteria reflect changes in the users' knowledge structure, revealing the SAL process. Furthermore, users achieved better task performance on the higher-level creative-learning task, which suggests that they met more learning criteria, exhibited a greater variety of search patterns when exploring the topics via interaction with various sources. Finally, there is a close relationship between creative-learning tasks, prior knowledge, keyword search actions and learning outcomes.

Originality/value

The authors discuss implications with respect to the design of DAs in practice and contributions to the body of SAL knowledge in DAs of online museums. For future reference, the authors provide implications for the development of learning measures from the perspective of user search behavior with associated learning outcomes in the context of DAs.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the application of advanced computer image processing techniques for flaw detection on flexible printed circuit (FPC) solder.

Design/methodology/approach

Texture directionality feature is obtained based on texture gradient, contour's position is extracted and directionality information obtained through analyzing the distribution of directionality. Contour similarity function is established to filter out false contour and keep proper contour, and the solder's location work is accomplished based on reversed contour. After that, a combination of grey and texture gradient's value deviation from reference value is utilized to reflect and describe texture on the solder's surface. Flaw can be distinguished from homogeneous texture background.

Findings

The method has been applied to the inspecting system and achieved a higher accuracy and a lower false defect rate. It demonstrates that the method can detect flaws efficiently and effectively.

Research limitations/implications

Although the work on FPC solder's location and flaw detection is presented, defective classification is not involved that is also very important content for inspection.

Originality/value

The paper provides a new way to locate solder based on directionality. The method not only extracts contour feature but also gains directional parameters to help realize accurate location, especially for some solders that are deformed to some extent. Entropy statistic based on distribution of grey and texture gradient is proposed to describe and measure solder's surface texture. The new algorithm performs stably and efficiently and is fit for practical application.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a new inspecting algorithm for defect detection on PCB circuits.

Design/methodology/approach

PCB circuit images were processed by a radon transformation. A Radon histogram was formed and utilized to establish a texture directional characteristic similarity function. Then, a region of the image which contained the same texture directionality feature was segmented. Furthermore, a directionality estimation method is presented. As the circuit was damaged, the directionality was weakened correspondingly. According to principle, the concept of directional intensity was proposed and then used to measure directionality through analysis of the Radon histogram fluctuation. Finally, the defect was detected based on directional intensity.

Findings

The method has been applied to an inspecting system used in practice and it achieved a higher accuracy and efficiency in comparison with similar methods.

Research limitations/implications

Although work on highly intensive PCB circuitry inspection and flaw detection is presented, defect classification was not involved although this is also a very important requirement of inspection.

Originality/value

The paper provides a new way to detect PCB circuitry defects based on texture directionality and proposes evaluating the similarity between image texture directionalities using a radon transformation to search the inspected area. As the inspected region was located, the concept of directional intensity was defined to measure texture directionality to identify defects. The new algorithm performs stably and efficiently and is fit for practical application.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the application of feature‐based image matching algorithm for PCB matching without using special fiducial marks.

Design/methodology/approach

Speed‐up robust feature (SURF) is applied to extract the interest points in PCB images. An advanced threshold is set to reject the interest points with low responses to speed up feature computation. In order to improve the performance for rotation, the descriptors are based on multi‐orientations. The many‐to‐many tentative correspondences are determined with a maximum distance. Hough transform is used to reject the mismatches and the affine parameters are computed with a square‐least solution.

Findings

Results show that the method proposed in this paper can match the PCB images without using special fiducial marks effectively. The image matching algorithm shows a better performance for image rotation than the standard SURF and it succeeds in matching the image including repetitive patterns which will deteriorate the distinctiveness of feature descriptors.

Research limitations/implications

Additional orientations produce more descriptors so that it takes extra time for feature description and matching.

Originality/value

The paper proposes a SURF‐based image matching algorithm to match the PCB images without special fiducial marks. This can reduce the complexity of PCB production. The image matching algorithm is robust to image rotation and repetitive patterns and can be used in other applications of image matching.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present an innovative approach that is proposed for developing e‐libraries with metadata to meet the need of training observation and classification skills in a mobile learning environment.

Design/methodology/approach

A knowledge engineering approach is proposed to assist teachers in defining metadata of e‐libraries to meet the need of training observation and classification skills. Based on the innovative approach, an e‐library of butterfly and ecology has been developed. Moreover, an experiment was conducted from March‐April 2007 on the science course “Butterfly and Ecology” at an elementary school in Taiwan. There were two teachers and 35 students participated in the experiment.

Findings

Experimental results showed that the e‐library developed with the innovative approach is able to effectively support the training of observation and classification skills for elementary school students.

Research limitations/implications

Currently, the innovative approach has only been applied to the training of observation and classification knowledge. Further studies will be needed to assist teachers in defining metadata of e‐libraries for other educational objectives, such as “analysis” (the ability to separate material or concepts into component parts so that its organizational structure may be understood), “synthesis” (the ability to put parts together to form a new whole) and “evaluation” (the ability to judge the value of material for a given purpose).

Originality/value

With the innovative approach, personalized supports can be provided as a guide for students' learning. Moreover, students are allowed to face the real objects with technology‐rich supports during the learning process.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the application of advanced computer image processing techniques for solving the problem of solder position error correction for flexible printed circuit (FPC) solder.

Design/methodology/approach

To correct position error, image information is defined according to information theory, and the mutual information entropy (MIE) is applied in evaluating the correlation between the images. A reference image is acquired which is used to evaluate the correlation with the inspecting image. The MIE increases as the FPC solder positioning accuracy increases. When the referent and inspecting FPC solders are aligned with the same place, the MIE is at a maximum. According to the principle, a genetic algorithm integrated with MIE as a fitness function is applied to search for the best optimal correction parameters to improve positioning accuracy.

Findings

The method is verified by a simulation and applied to the inspection system. As a result of experiment using four FPC solder samples, it has been demonstrated that the method can correct position errors.

Research limitations/implications

The method of defective detection is not involved, although that of searching for and locating FPC solder is presented.

Originality/value

The method of correcting position error based on MIE has high flexibility and can help improve positioning accuracy. In particular, it provides a new way to correct position error and can be implemented on any sort of target which is regular or irregular based on image technology.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze how the financial supervision authority utilizes the restrictions of capital constraints imposing on commercial banks the need to develop the macro economy.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses multilateral game to deduce the loan characteristics of banks, vector and void coordinates to analyze the behavior choices of banks under capital supervision, sets up an index to describe the risk preference of banks, and analyzes the process with Chinese data empirically.

Findings

This paper finds big banks have a loan preference for big enterprises and small banks have a preference for establishing a bank syndicate to pursue large projects. Further, the paper notes the conditions by which the heterology banks choose loans across the border and proves that changes of capital requirements would force the credit structure of the commercial banks to adjust along an efficient frontier broken line or an efficient frontier plane under the conditions of interest rate regulation or interest rate marketization, respectively.

Research limitations/implications

It is very complex to describe the choices of risk behavior of banks and the simple supervision method needs to be adjusted.

Practical implications

This paper finds that banks show risk preferences of credit structure, and capital constraints would affect it greatly; regulators should guard against capital constraint softening.

Originality/value

It is the first time that the conditions of banks beyond the loan border have been studied and the behavior adjustment of banks using the vector and void coordinate analyzed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present μ-synthesis-based robust attitude trajectory tracking control of three degree-of-freedom four rotor hover vehicle.

Design/methodology/approach

Comprehensive modelling of hover vehicle is presented, followed by development of uncertainty model. A μ-synthesis-based controller is designed using the DK iteration method that not only handles structured and unstructured uncertainties effectively but also guarantees robust performance. The performance of the proposed controller is evaluated through simulations, and the controller is also implemented on experimental platform. Simulation and experimental results validate that μ-synthesis-based robust controller is found effective in: solving robust attitude trajectory tracking problem of multirotor vehicle systems, handling parameter variations and dealing with external disturbances.

Findings

Performance analysis of the proposed controller guarantees robust stability and also ensures robust trajectory tracking performance for nominal system and for 15-20 per cent variations in the system parameters. In addition, the results also ensure robust handling of wind gusts disturbances.

Originality/value

This research addresses the robust performance of hover vehicle’s attitude control subjected to uncertainties and external disturbances using μ-synthesis-based controller. This is the only method so far that guarantees robust stability and performance simultaneously.
