Abstract

Purpose

A family of preconditioned dual‐primal FETI iterative algorithms for the solution of algebraic systems arising from edge element approximations in two dimensions is presented.

Design/methodology/approach

The primal constraints, which determine the size of the coarse problem to be solved at each iteration step, are here suitable averages over subdomain edges. The condition number of the corresponding methods is independent of the number of subdomains and possibly large jumps of the coefficients.

Findings

For h finite elements, it grows only polylogarithmically with the number of unknowns associated with individual substructures, while for hp approximations on geometrically refined meshes, it is independent of arbitrarily large aspect ratios.

Originality/value

Proposes an algorithm with a rate of convergence that is independent of possibly large jumps of the coefficients and mesh aspect ratios.

Abstract

Purpose

Effective rural agribusiness development requires dedicated training programmes therefore, this paper is an attempt to investigate smallholder farmers’ TNs in the dairy agribusiness sector. The purpose of this paper is to study a bigger research project of the dairy value chain in agribusiness framework in the Rwenzori region.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample size of 100 dairy farmers were randomly selected from two Districts in the Rwenzori region. The descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) provided a basis for discussion. Furthermore, parametric Pearson coefficient test was conducted to examine the smallholder farmers’ TNs and assess its association with selected socio-demographic characteristics of the dairy farmers.

Findings

The analysis indicated that dairy farmers expressed the need for a training program. Most frequently requested topics include: fodder cultivation, quality and safe milk handling, milk marketing, calf feeding and rearing, animal nutrition and financial literacy out of 12 topics. The least desired TNs was record keeping.

Research limitations/implications

The findings contribute to the understanding of dairy farmers’ TNs.

Practical implications

The identified 12 key training intervention areas for the dairy farmers inform policymakers Dairy Development Authority and other development bodies in the Rwenzori region to address the challenges and improve smallholder dairy farming practices.

Originality/value

The study applies a synthesis review to identify theoretically acceptable variables that measure smallholder farmers’ TNs in the dairy agribusiness. The paper also shares the empirical evidence of a pioneering attempt to identify smallholder dairy farmers’ TNs in Uganda.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore newly graduated nurses’ experiences of their preparation for psychiatric nursing practice in Malawi. Knowledge of how basic or undergraduate nursing training programs prepare nurses for mental health services will inform educators to maximize the teaching and learning processes. Students are a key stakeholder in professional training hence an understanding of their experiences of training programs is critical.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative exploratory study was undertaken. In total, 16 newly graduated nurses with six months work experience at three psychiatric hospitals in Malawi were purposively sampled and recruited into the study. One to one interviews which lasted almost 45 minutes were conducted. Data were analyzed using content analysis.

Findings

Findings show that training programs fall short in preparing students for psychiatric nursing practice. Participants reported little attention to the specialty as compared to other specialties by educators. Inadequate academic support during practice sessions was highlighted by the majority of participants.

Research limitations/implications

The study needed to compare the findings with experiences of students who have been allocated to other nursing specialties.

Originality/value

Psychiatric nursing specialty remains the least preferred career choice for many nursing students. However, preservice nursing education programs are expected to socialize, motivate and prepare students for psychiatric practice as well. It is therefore critical to understand gaps that exist in student preparation for psychiatric nursing services in order to improve mental health training.
