Abstract
It has taken about twenty years to develop and implement the wide range of public databases offered via host services today. In most cases the information available is bibliographic, factual or numeric, but full text databases are becoming more and more important. To improve their services, some vendors have added sophisticated graphics and front end features to their bibliographic and numeric databases. These improvements have been applied both at the host site, with the host systems handling the bulk of data and graphics processing, and to PC and workstation software, where sophisticated graphics and text processing packages adapted to host‐specific output formats are required. Future developments are expected in three main areas: (1) host based menu‐driven systems which do not require sophisticated user hardware; (2) menu and front end interfaces on gateway and mailbox services which allow easy access to many databases, albeit with limited search capabilities; (3) PC or front end computer based systems which already have good retrieval interaction and input/output processing features, but require more expensive hardware and software at the user's site. In the future, PC based systems are expected to utilise expert systems, both to support the retrieval of information online and to enhance the quality of the retrieved information by sophisticated post‐processing features. The developments in user support features and advanced search input/output environments which have hitherto been implemented for non full text databases now need to be introduced to enhance full text retrieval.

To describe the services offered by FIZ Karlsruhe.
Abstract
Purpose
To describe the services offered by FIZ Karlsruhe.
Design/methodology/approach
Descriptive.
Findings
FIZ AutoDoc is suitable for end‐users without specific knowledge of document delivery services. The depth of integrating FIZ AutoDoc into a company's full‐text supply and the degree of using it are arbitrary and depend on each company's specific situation. The whole spectrum of sci‐tech literature is made available: journal articles, reports, patent documents, books, etc., whatever publishers and scientific libraries offer. The usage via a portal on the web, integrated in intranets, or linked with other information providers' systems, makes FIZ AutoDoc the solution for all full‐text requirements.
Originality/value
Provides an insider description of an important document supplier both in Germany and internationally which uses the collections of other libraries to satisfy customer demand. Some trend statistics of demand are given.

This paper aims to report on the Pharma Documentation Ring (P‐D‐R) special meeting 2008 on access and use of publishers' content through multiple channels.
Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to report on the Pharma Documentation Ring (P‐D‐R) special meeting 2008 on access and use of publishers' content through multiple channels.
Design/methodology/approach
After an introduction to the goals and activities of the P‐D‐R, the paper describes the different sessions of the meeting and then summarises the topics related to document supply.
Findings
The paper reports on the use of primary information in pharmaceutical companies, on global services arising from national functions, on outsourcing information management, and on technical solutions to control, monitor and limit access. One of the hot topics of the conference was restriction by digital rights management (DRM) measures.
Originality/value
This report provides insights into the issues currently facing the pharmaceutical industry. The pharmaceutical industry is the only corporate sector with a long and profitable tradition of networking between information professionals.
