Abstract

Purpose

Lean and Six Sigma are the two most powerful methodologies for process improvement. They have been widely employed in manufacturing and healthcare industries to achieve substantial cost savings and quality improvement. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the implementation of Lean and Six Sigma for improving logistics operations.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was conducted among 410 companies registered under the Singapore Logistics Association and returned 32 usable responses. Ļ‡2-tests were used to identify factors affecting the implementation of Lean and Six Sigma.

Findings

It was found that 37.5 per cent of respondents had implemented Lean and the majority of them had implemented Six Sigma together. All implementing companies reported varying degrees of cost savings and productivity improvements. Large logistics companies are more likely to implement Lean and Six Sigma. Companies with a higher service standard are more likely to implement Six Sigma.

Research limitations/implications

The survey was limited to Singapore. Future studies should explore a broader geographical coverage and improve the response rate.

Practical implications

Lean and Six Sigma are applicable for improving logistics operations. Senior management must be committed to support an implementation. Effective training and communications are required for overcoming resistance to change and helping employees to understand improvement methodologies and initiatives.

Originality/value

This research is the very first survey study of Lean and Six Sigma in the logistics industry. It reveals similarities and differences in comparison with the implementation of these methodologies in the manufacturing industry. The findings offer valuable insights for improving logistics operations.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on strategic choice theory, this study examines the impact and mechanisms of intellectual property demonstration city (IPDC) policy in China on corporate ESG performance.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses Chinaā€™s A-share listed companiesā€™ data from 2009 to 2019 and conducts a difference-in-differences (DID) to explore the causal relationship between IPDC policy and corporate ESG performance.

Findings

Baseline regression results indicate that the IPDC policy can significantly improve corporate ESG performance. Mechanism tests reveal that the IPDC policy expands firm green technology innovation, enhances firm human capital investment and increases government innovation subsidies, thereby promoting corporate ESG performance. Moderating effect results show that the promotion impact on corporate ESG performance of the IPDC policy is diminished by government fiscal pressure. Heterogeneity analyses indicate that the IPDC policy has a stronger impact on corporate ESG performance in key cities, firms in high-tech industries, firms with a higher reliance on intellectual property protection (IPP) and state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

Originality/value

The findings enrich the theoretical research on the influencing factors of corporate ESG performance and provide practical references to strengthen IPP and implement a more thorough intellectual property development strategy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to establish a rapid and effective numerical model of thin film lubrication with clear physical conception, in which viscosity variation along the direction of film thickness was used instead of average viscosity, and continuous Reynolds equation was used in the calculation of thin film lubrication.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on rheology and thin film lubrication with point contact and considering features of shear thinning and like-solidification of lubricant oil in the thin film lubrication state, a modified formula with overall average equivalent viscosity was proposed by combining numerical calculation and experiment data.

Findings

It is a fast and efficient method for film lubrication state simulation.

Research limitations/implications

Thin film lubrication research on a nanoscale is very popular, and a variety of thin film lubrication models are proposed. Due to the complexity of thin film lubrication, it is still in the stage of revealing law and establishing calculation model.

Originality/value

The key issue is how to obtain the viscosity correction formula derived from engineering practice, also considered the lubricating oil class solidification and shear-thinning properties on thin film lubrication, while based on the system experiment, the viscosity modified formula for the gap, speed changes are proposed to obtain the overall average equivalent viscosity which makes the thin film lubrication micro to macro, so that a clear physical meaning for thin-film lubrication numerical calculation model is established.

Abstract

Purpose ā€“ Urban and suburban arterials carry a large share of urban traffic and contend with a relatively large proportion of transport network crashes. Road crashes and their consequent societal costs diminish the sustainability of transportation systems, highlighting the need to identify road safety problems and their corresponding solutions. This chapter briefly outlines problems and solutions associated with crash risk on urban and suburban arterials. In addition, this chapter studies and discusses several safety countermeasures ā€“ ranging from local treatments to integral frameworks ā€“ and their effectiveness on improving traffic safety of urban and suburban arterials.

Approach ā€“ Crash occurrence on urban and suburban arterials is affected by numerous contributing factors. This chapter pays attention primarily to the effects of traffic characteristics and road design features. In this regard, several pertinent variables which have been extensively examined in the literature are reviewed and their contributions to the safety of urban and suburban arterials are discussed.

Findings ā€“ A review of the literature identifies a number of variables as influential factors of crashes on urban and suburban arterials. Although the associations of some variables (e.g., traffic volume) are consistent with expectations, others (e.g., lane width and speed) show mixed and sometimes counterintuitive results. These findings signify that additional research is needed to reveal the correct functional form and magnitude of these relationships.

Practical implications ā€“ The results show that while the general direction and magnitude of effects of some engineering and management-related treatments are known, additional research is needed to consolidate the impact and effectiveness of integrated approaches.

Abstract

Purpose

As the pioneer nation to formally integrate data as a factor of production into its national strategy, does Chinaā€™s research emphasis on data factor market differ from that of other countries? Currently, there is a notable absence of comprehensive comparative analyses addressing this issue. The purpose of this study is to fill this gap by systematically reviewing the development trajectory of research on the data factor market from a governance perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the authors used Citespace software to conduct bibliometric analyses on a corpus of 1,304 international publications and 1,249 Chinese publications. These analyses encompassed various dimensions, including publication quantity and trend analysis, cocitation analysis and keyword cooccurrence analysis, while also facilitating a comparative examination of research disparities between Chinese and international literature.

Findings

There are significant differences between Chinese and international data factor market studies in terms of governance environment, governance entities, governance technology and governance mechanism. The authors strongly advocate the promotion of cross-border research collaboration to advance the research and application of data factor market governance.

Originality/value

The authors have innovatively proposed a framework for data factor market governance. Building upon this framework, the authors conducted a comprehensive comparative analysis of research disparities between Chinese and international literature, thereby unveiling emerging research trends in the field of data factor market.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to contribute to the literature investigating hotel customersā€™ preventive behavior during the COVID-19. Because there is no timely research discussing cleaning and disinfection services as a premium service in China, the authors conducted research to examine customersā€™ perceptions based on the informationā€“motivationā€“behavioral skills (IMB) model and to explore potential marketing exits. Moreover, based on the price-sensitive measurement, this study reveals the price range and optimal price of the service, which could assess the feasibility of the service and balance the operation cost.

Design/methodology/approach

An internet-based, self-reported survey was designed to collect the data during the outbreak of COVID-19 in April 2020. The yield was 874 usable and valid responses, which were purposefully analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results indicate a significant influence of dimensions (information, motivation, health behavior skills) on hotel customersā€™ preventive behavior regarding purchase intention of cleaning and disinfection service. The optimal price of this service is 20% of the average room rate, and the range of acceptable prices is 15% of the average room rate.

Originality/value

The present study represents academic attempts to contribute to the literature by applying the IMB model to consumer behavior in a hotel industry context, emphasizing the importance of each dimension in behavioral intention during the current ongoing global issue. Additionally, the results indicate that the hotel industry could consider satisfying the needs of this market based on the suggested price.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce several synchronization test methods of Networkā€onā€Chip (NoC) at multiā€clock domains by digital logic circuits.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the authors gave the structure of NoC, the test methods for NoC in multiā€clock domains, including Builtā€in Self Test (BIST) structure and the architecture of embedded core test. Then the authors approached four different synchronization structures: twoā€level trigger, two kinds of lock methods, toggle and pulse synchronization methods. Based on the NoC work conditions, the authors built the experiment structures of different methods, and obtained the experiment results at high frequencies.

Findings

From the experiments at high frequency, it can be seen that the methods of toggle and the pulse methods are prone to failed synchronization. Therefore, the lock method is more appropriate for NoC under multiple clock domains.

Originality/value

In this paper, several synchronization test methods of NoC at multiā€clock domains are discussed and compared, and the best one determined.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the pure squeeze thin film elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TFEHL) motion of circular contacts with adsorption layers attached to each surface under constant load condition. The proposed model can reasonably calculate the pressure distributions, film thicknesses, normal squeeze velocities, and effective viscosities during the pure squeeze process under thin film lubrication.

Design/methodology/approach

The transient modified Reynolds equation is derived in polar coordinates using viscous adsorption theory. The finite difference method and the Gaussā€Seidel iteration method are used to solve the transient modified Reynolds equation, the elasticity deformation equation, load balance equation, and lubricant rheology equations simultaneously.

Findings

The simulation results reveal that the thickness of the adsorption layer and the viscosity ratio significantly influence the lubrication characteristics of the contact conjunction in the thin film regime. In additional, the turning points in the film thickness which distinguish thin film lubrication from elastohydrodynamic lubrication curve is found. In thin film region, the effective viscosity predicted by present model is better than that predicted by traditional elastohydrodynamic theory.

Originality/value

The paper develops a numerical method for general applications with adsorption layers attached to each surface to investigate the pure squeeze action in a TFEHL spherical conjunction under constant load condition.

Abstract

Purpose

The cleaning of food production equipment using cleaning detergents may contaminate the lubricant of the bearings, thereby reducing the bearing service life. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the cause and mechanism of such damage of bearings lubricated by cleaning detergent/water-in-oil emulsions.

Design/methodology/approach

The emulsion was prepared by adding a mixture of cleaning detergent and water in one base oil. A self-designed ball-on-disc optical interference test rig was applied to examine the effect of emulsion on lubrication and wear of bearing contacts under pure sliding conditions.

Findings

The emulsion reduced lubricating film thickness at a relatively low-sliding speed but only when the water concentration (20%) in emulsion was high. Water droplets were trapped around the ball-on-disc contact area under static conditions because of a high capillary force. The emulsion can induce damages on the soft surface in the startup mainly due to the presence of water around the contact.

Originality/value

The basic lubrication behaviour of water/oil emulsions containing cleaning detergent under pure sliding was experimental studied and the mechanism of bearing damage in food production equipment was investigated. Based on the study, the solution to avoid such damage was proposed.

Abstract

Purpose

Unsupervised domain adaptation object detection not only mitigates model terrible performance resulting from domain gap, but also has the ability to apply knowledge trained on a definite domain to a distinct domain. However, aligning the whole feature may confuse the object and background information, making it challenging to extract discriminative features. This paper aims to propose an improved approach which is called intrinsic feature extraction domain adaptation (IFEDA) to extract discriminative features effectively.

Design/methodology/approach

IFEDA consists of the intrinsic feature extraction (IFE) module and object consistency constraint (OCC). The IFE module, designed on the instance level, mainly solves the issue of the difficult extraction of discriminative object features. Specifically, the discriminative region of the objects can be paid more attention to. Meanwhile, the OCC is deployed to determine whether category prediction in the target domain brings into correspondence with it in the source domain.

Findings

Experimental results demonstrate the validity of our approach and achieve good outcomes on challenging data sets.

Research limitations/implications

Limitations to this research are that only one target domain is applied, and it may change the ability of model generalization when the problem of insufficient data sets or unseen domain appeared.

Originality/value

This paper solves the issue of critical information defects by tackling the difficulty of extracting discriminative features. And the categories in both domains are compelled to be consistent for better object detection.
