Abstract
Purpose
In response to the navigation challenges faced by coal mine tunnel inspection robots in semistructured underground intersection environments, many current studies rely on structured map-based planning algorithms and trajectory tracking techniques. However, this approach is highly dependent on the accuracy of the global map, which can lead to deviations from the predetermined route or collisions with obstacles. To improve the environmental adaptability and navigation precision of the robot, this paper aims to propose an adaptive navigation system based on a two-dimensional (2D) LiDAR.
Design/methodology/approach
Leveraging the geometric features of coal mine tunnel environments, the clustering and fitting algorithms are used to construct a geometric model within the navigation system. This not only reduces the complexity of the navigation system but also optimizes local positioning. By constructing a local potential field, there is no need for path-fitting planning, thus enhancing the robot’s adaptability in intersection environments. The feasibility of the algorithm principles is validated through MATLAB and robot operating system simulations in this paper.
Findings
The experiments demonstrate that this method enables autonomous driving and optimized positioning capabilities in harsh environments, with high real-time performance and environmental adaptability, achieving a positioning error rate of less than 3%.
Originality/value
This paper presents an adaptive navigation system for a coal mine tunnel inspection robot using a 2D LiDAR sensor. The system improves robot attitude estimation and motion control accuracy to ensure safe and reliable navigation, especially at tunnel intersections.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to devise novel methods for effectively reducing China’s coal mining accidents via analysis of the relation between coal mine safety production and social factors.
Design/methodology/approach
The variations and characteristics of the safety production for coal mines in China from 1949 to 2013 are studied via induction and statistical analysis of data from the perspective of mortality rate per million tons, raw coal output and death tolls. It is analyzed that the relationship between coal mine safety production level and social economic, safety investment via SPSS.
Findings
Analysis of the coal mine safety management evolution across the 64 years after the founding of China demonstrates that China’s coal mine safety management evolution is partitioned into four stages, and there is the coupling relation between coal mine safety production and structure the of coal industry, government supervision and safety investment. By discussing the similarity between China and America in coal mine safety management evolution, it is found that the rapid increase in the number of accidents during the transformation from agricultural to industrial society is not accidental.
Practical implications
The suggestions in this paper are helpful to improve the current safety situation in China’s coal mines and provide management experience to other coal mining countries.
Originality/value
Based on present and future socioeconomic development, it is proposed that the coal mine safety situation can be further enhanced by properly adjusting the structure of the coal industry, strengthening supervision and ensuring safety investment.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to solve the problem of path planning and path tracking in the automatic parking assistant system.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper first uses the method of reverse driving to confirm few control points based on the constraints of the construction of the vehicle and the environment information, then a reference path with free-collision and continuous curvature is designed based on the Bézier curve. According to the principle of the discrete linear quadratic regulator (LQR), a tracking controller that combines feedforward control and feedback control is designed.
Findings
Finally, simulation analysis are carried out in Simulink and CARSIM. The results show that the proposed method can obtain a better path tracking effect when the parking space size is appropriate.
Originality/value

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to develop a model and measurement to investigate the factors influencing cloud computing adoption as a part of developing countries’ alternatives to implement e-government services.
Design/methodology/approach
This study proposes a theoretical model based on the literature of technology adoption models. It constructs scale measurements for the proposed model constructs by extracting and adapting the items from the literature. The authors verify the scales’ content validity and reliability by applying face validity, pre-testing and pilot study. For the pilot study, the authors collect the data from 26 information technology staff in five public organizations in Yemen. The authors test the reliability of the scales using Cronbach’s alpha criterion, and then conduct exploratory factor analysis to evaluate the validity of the scales.
Findings
The results show that the scale measurements meet the conventional criteria of reliability and validity.
Originality/value
Theoretically, this paper provides an integrated model for examining cloud computing adoption for e-government implementation in developing countries. In addition, it develops an instrument to empirically investigate the influencing factors of cloud computing adoption in the context of developing countries’ e-government initiatives.

Abstract
Purpose
This study uses the technology fit–viability theory to study the performance of one of the early pioneers of open government data (OGD) in Africa. The study aims to investigate the task and technology fit, as well as the economic, IT infrastructure and organisational viability as performance measures for the Ghana Open Government Data (GOGD) initiative.
Design/methodology/approach
The study adopted a qualitative approach by interviewing key actors within the GOGD ecosystem, namely, the OGD implementing body, data suppliers and data users. The results were compared with established OGD best practices and standards around the world.
Findings
The results suggest that Ghana’s OGD architecture appears far from meeting its fit and viability goals because of lacklustre performance attributed to the following factors: a complete lack of synergy among various stakeholder groups and actors in the GOGD ecosystem, a lack of sustainable financial support for the implementing body, a shortage of qualified staff for the GOGD project and partial neglect of GOGD as a consequence of the implementation of a new project called eTransform.
Research limitations/implications
This research is limited to Ghana’s OGD initiative. Perhaps, a comparative study on the performance of other OGD initiatives in Africa and other developed countries will present another view of how OGD initiatives are performing across the globe. Again, the number of interviewees in the study may not be sufficient to generalise the results.
Practical implications
The study guides developing economies on how to examine national and international legal frameworks that have consequences on the usage of OGD at the national and sub-national levels. Besides, the study results will help implementing agencies and by extension government to be wary of the consequences of neglecting relevant stakeholders in the implementation process. The study also emphasizes on the need for developing economies to have sustainable funding and technical support for OGD implementation.
Social implications
The study helps shape citizens’ understanding of what the government is doing pursuant to making data readily available for them. Because OGD spurs innovations, citizens’ continuous involvement is key in the process of realising government drive to be open and accountable to citizens through data.
Originality/value
This research is the first, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, to present a retrospective and prospective view of a country’s OGD implementation to ascertain the country’s fit and viability. More uniquely, this study will be the first, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, in assessing the performance of OGD setup in Africa.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to figure out the exact knowledge demand of makers. Furthermore, the paper aims to construct the knowledge space based on makers’ knowledge demand.
Design/methodology/approach
The first step of this research is to explore the makers’ knowledge demand by the methods of field investigation, non-interventional study and in-depth interviews. On that basis, the elements, principles, framework and mechanism of the knowledge space were discussed. The grounded theory and NVivo software were used in the data analysis.
Findings
The investigation shows that interest and competition are the main motivations for makers’ knowledge demand. The findings also indicate that the characteristics are active knowledge needs, “informal learning” preferences, divergent thinking, close community ties and interdisciplinary. According to the makers’ knowledge demand node conceptual model, the content of makers’ knowledge demand is principle knowledge, empirical knowledge and knowledge situation. Based on the above findings, the elements, principles, operation framework and inherent operation mechanism of the knowledge space construction are systemically described.
Originality/value
This study gives precise details about makers’ knowledge demand and the construction of makers’ knowledge space by libraries. This is the first research that comprehensively explores the knowledge demand of makers. The findings can help the library plan and implement the construction of makerspace, and also improve the service for makers.
