Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine if the participation of live-stream influencers (LSIs) affects tipping frequency on live streaming platforms, and further investigate the mediating and moderating mechanisms.
Design/methodology/approach
Quasi-experiment and difference-in-differences models are used for data analysis. Propensity score matching is used to address potential unobservable endogeneity.
Findings
Real-time live streaming data reveal that LSIs’ participation significantly improves tipping frequency in live streaming rooms. Also, more users are attracted to the live streaming rooms and more users become active in participation. Additionally, the positive impact of LSIs’ participation is enhanced in the live streaming rooms with a greater number of relationship links between users.
Research limitations/implications
The findings clarify the new role of influencers and reveal the mechanisms on how LSIs benefit the platforms.
Practical implications
The findings offer novel insights into implementing influencer marketing to interactive social media platforms, by encouraging influencer participation, user relationship building and influencer network growth.
Originality/value
This study highlights the value of LSIs for interactive social media platforms in terms of organic growth, revenue generation and cost reduction.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to design an automatic press-fit instrument to realize precision assembly and connection quality assessment of a small interference fitting parts, armature.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, an automatic press-fit instrument was developed for the technical problems of reliable clamping and positioning of the armature, automatic measurement and adjustment of the attitude and evaluation of the connection quality. To compensate for the installation error of the equipment, corresponding calibration method was proposed for each module of the instrument. Assembly strategies of axial displacement and perpendicularity were also proposed to ensure the assembly accuracy. A theoretical model was built to calculate the resistant force generated by the non-contact regions and then combined with the thick-walled cylinder theory to predict the press-fit curve.
Findings
The calibration method and assembly strategy proposed in this paper enable the press-fit instrument to achieve good alignment and assembly accuracy. A reasonable range of press-fit curve obtained from theoretical model can achieve the connection quality assessment.
Practical implications
This instrument has been used in an armature assembly project. The practical results show that this instrument can assemble the armature components with complex structures automatically, accurately, in high-efficiency and in high quality.
Originality/value
This paper provides a technical method to improve the assembly quality of small precision interference fitting parts and provides certain methodological guidelines for precision peg-in-hole assembly.

Abstract
Purpose
Natural convection heat transfer during free convection phenomenon in a cavity included with active fins and pipes is investigated. The influence of the orientation of fins on the heat transfer between heat source (i.e. hot fins) and heat sink (i.e. cold pipes) is investigated by using numerical and experimental techniques.
Design/methodology/approach
For the numerical simulations, the multiple relaxation time (MRT) thermal lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is used. In this numerical approach, two separated distribution functions are used to solve the flow and temperature distributions within the computational domain. Furthermore, the local/volumetric second law analysis is used to show the impact of evaluated parameters on the heat transfer irreversibility. In addition, the dynamic viscosity and thermal conductivity of TiO2-water nanofluid are measured by using Brookfield viscometer and KD2 pro conductmeter, respectively.
Findings
The examined range of Rayleigh number is from 103 to 106, and the nanofluid samples are provided in 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 ppm.
Originality/value
The originality of this work is use of dual-MRT thermal LBM and experimental measurements of rheological/thermal properties of nanofluid for investigation of free convection problem for the considered application.

Purpose
For some specific multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problems, especially in emergency situations, because of the feature of criteria and other fuzzy factors, it is more appropriate that values of different criteria are expressed in their correspondingly appropriate value types. The purpose of this paper is to build a multi-criteria group decision-making (MCGDM) model dealing with heterogeneous information based on distance-based VIKOR to solve emergency supplier selection in practice appropriately and flexibly, where a compromise solution is more acceptable and suitable.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper extends the classical VIKOR to a generalized distance-based VIKOR to handle heterogeneous information containing crisp number, interval number, intuitionistic fuzzy number and hesitant fuzzy linguistic value, and develops an MCGDM model based on the distance-based VIKOR to handle the multi-criteria heterogeneous information in practice. This paper also introduces a parameter called non-fuzzy degree for each type of heterogeneous value to moderate the computation on aggregating heterogeneous hybrid distances.
Findings
The proposed distance-based model can handle the heterogeneous information appropriately and flexibly because the computational process is directly operated on the heterogeneous information based on generalized distance without a transformation process, which can improve the decision-making efficiency and reduce information loss. An example of emergency supplier selection is given to illustrate the proposed method.
Originality/value
This paper develops an MCGDM model based on the distance-based VIKOR to handle heterogeneous information appropriately and flexibly. In emergency supplier selection situations, the proposed decision-making model allows the decision-makers to express their judgments on criteria in their appropriate value types.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the preparation and the flexural property of hollow glass microspheres (HGMs) filled resin-matrix composites, which have been widely applied in deep-sea fields.
Design/methodology/approach
The composites with different contents of HGMs from 47 to 57 Wt.% were studied. The voids in syntactic foams and their flexural properties were investigated.
Findings
The results showed that the voids quantity increased because of the increment of HGM content, whereas the exural strength and the exural modulus decreased. The fracture mechanism of the composites was also investigated by scanning electron microscope, which indicated that the composites failed by the crack extending through the microspheres.
Research limitations/implications
The advantages of HGMs with similar hollow spheres will be further investigated in a future research.
Practical implications
Results demonstrated that the properties of the composite might be tailored for specific application conditions by changing the HGM volume fraction.
Originality/value
The HGM filled resin-matrix composite materials have their unique properties and significant application potential. In this work, the resin-HGM composites were synthesized by mechanically mixing defined quantities of HGMs into epoxy resin, by which a kind of syntactic foams with good flexural properties could be obtained.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide some useful information on the tribological performance of thermoplastic polyimide (TPI) reinforced with rigid glass fillers of different shapes and sizes under dry, water, and oil lubrication conditions.
Design/methodology/approach
Rigid glass fillers of different shapes and sizes are chosen to modify TPI and its mechanical properties are measured. The stress‐strain behaviors of the composites are simulated by the finite element method and the effect of filler morphology is also considered. Furthermore, the tribological performance of the composites is investigated in different environmental media, including air, water, and oil.
Findings
It is demonstrated that the toughness of the materials decreases on filling them with rigid glass, and that stress concentration causes cracks around the spherical glass beads, which reduces the material impact strength. Owing to heat moulding technology, glass fiber has certain orientation and absorbs the impact energy effectively. A better wear‐resistant material is obtained by choosing a bigger filler due to its higher bond strength with the matrix. Under water and oil lubrication, the fatigue failure is the main reason for material wear, and fiber‐reinforced TPI has favorable wear‐resistance due to its shape. Meanwhile, glass beads could roll on the contact surface, which polishes the surface and reduces the friction coefficient, and its effect is reduced on oil lubrication for its high viscosity.
Originality/value
This paper analyzes the effect of rigid glass fillers of different shapes and sizes on the mechanical properties and tribological performance of polyimide composites.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to find out what are the effective school principal leadership (ESPL) factors or indicators that Chinese teachers consider or expect. It explains how and why ESPL factors are important for effective school improvement (ESI). It tries to expand the domain knowledge of ESPL.
Design/methodology/approach
The questionnaires consisted of eight factors and 40 indicators. The rating instrument was a five point Likert Scale (from 1 to 5). In total, 100 school teachers in Liaoning Province of mainland China were participated and surveyed. Factor analysis, t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to analyze the collected data.
Findings
This study provides empirical insights about what ESPL factors that Chinese teachers considered. According to the results of t-test and one-way ANOVA, there were no significant differences between and among the respondents’ gender, areas and years of teaching experiences in rating the ESPL factors. The findings argue that the 16 extracted ESPL indicators have not only revealed the expectations of Chinese teachers toward their school principals, but also have drawn a three-dimensional-image of what a good and effective school principal should be. From the Chinese teachers’ eyes, a good school principal should not only possess good managerial skills in the aspects of time and routine work (such as self management, time management, influence, decision making and commitment) but also should possess good emotional intelligence, human skills, more attentiveness and consideration toward the needs of their followers (such as comfort, communication skills and empathy, etc.).
Practical implications
This study provides implications for all school stakeholders, particularly for school principals, school leaders and educational managers both in and outside of schools. A good school principal should possess good ESPL characters/factors. If not, at least he/she should be aware of the ESPL characters/factors and actively adopt or adapt them. Thus the ESPL factors or indicators extracted from this study can be served as a mirror and a useful knowledge.
Originality/value
This study belongs to very few of this kind of researches carried out in mainland China. Its findings have made some contributions to the ESPL research in mainland China, to the research of school leadership and ESI.

To examine the strategic posture of third‐party logistics (3PLs) providers in mainland China.
Design/methodology/approach
A sample survey, obtained by mail, of 3PLs firms in mainland China. Key informant data are used to operationalize Porter's competitive strategy and provides a framework to identify logistics strategies pursued by 3PLs providers. Various aspects of 3PLs providers are compared by different strategy types.
Findings
Identified four logistics strategies pursued by 3PLs providers in mainland China. Differentiation strategy outperforms cost leadership strategy. Companies pursuing cost leadership are shifting towards differentiation strategy to cope with the intense competition faced in mainland China's immense logistics markets.
Research limitations/implications
Bias may exist due to the mail survey. In‐depth studies on strategy formulation of 3PLs providers could be carried out to examine what factors influence the strategy formulation and explore the strategy evolution path.
Practical implications
This study is a very insightful source of information about 3PLs in mainland China for logistics managers, investors and policy‐makers. It provides guidance for 3PLs executives to formulate logistics strategy, adjust business objectives and prioritize operations, and for logistics users to select appropriate logistics providers. There are also suggestions for government to improve the business environment for the logistics industry. The study provides a basis for research on logistics management in mainland China.
Originality/value
This study is a pioneer and comprehensive study of mainland China's 3PLs providers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to examine 3PLs providers in mainland China.

This article is an editorial to JCHMSD's Volume 3, Issue 1 and aims to provide an overview to its selection of papers.
Design/methodology/approach
The article builds upon a previous editorial on the implementation of the new UNESCO Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL). It discusses a research and training programme under development by the World Heritage Institute of Training and Research in Asia and the Pacific (WHITRAP) and Tongji University's Advanced Research Institute for Architecture and Urban Planning, in Shanghai, China, to help determining a strategy for the application of the HUL approach in China.
Findings
The HUL approach facilitates a structuring and priority setting of competing needs and demands for the integration of urban development and heritage management processes, which is perhaps most pressing in the current Chinese context of rapid and large‐scale urbanization. However, its precise meaning, and therefore its merit, is still poorly understood in China due to confusing conceptual foundations and interpretations, primarily related to the terminology of “cultural landscape”.
Originality/value
This research paper outlines a series of pertinent issues and questions as part of a critical path –a “road map”– for the application of the HUL approach, as promoted by UNESCO, in China and it outlines key areas for further research, in particular as concerns the development of a toolkit.
