Abstract

Facing uncertain environments, firms have strived to achieve competitive advantage by partnership management and supply chain collaboration. The objective of the research is to uncover the nature of partnership management and explore its impact on supply chain collaboration and firm innovation performance. The research divides partnership management into three stages: partnership selection, partnership establishment, and partnership sustention. The research constructs the influence mechanism of partnership management on supply chain collaboration and innovation performance. By questionnaire of 133 manufacturing enterprises in the Yangtze River Delta of China, and using SPSS statistical analysis, the empirical results show that partnership selection, partnership establishment, and partnership sustention have significantly positive influence on supply chain collaboration and innovation performance; supply chain collaboration has a complete mediating effect between partnership election, partnership establishment, and innovation performance; and supply chain collaboration has a partial mediating effect between partnership sustention and innovation performance. The research reveals the construct mechanism of firms’ improving innovation performance through partnership management.

Abstract

Much has been analyzed regarding the origins and the impact of rankings and metrics on policies, behaviors, and missions of universities. Surprisingly, little attention has been allocated to describing and analyzing the emergence of metrics as a new action field. This industry, fueled by the “new public management” policy perspectives that operate at the backstage of the contemporary pervasive “regime of excellence,” still remains a black box worth exploring in depth. This paper intends to fill this loophole. It first sets the stage for this new action field by stressing the differences between the policy fields of higher education in the United States and Europe, as a way to understand the specificities of the use of metrics and rankings on both continents. The second part describes the actors of the field, which productive organizations they build, what skills they combine, which products they put on the market, and their shared norms and audiences.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to further develop stator permanent magnet (PM) type memory machines by providing generalized design guidelines for double-stator memory machines (DSMMs) with hybrid PMs. This paper discusses the design experience of DSMMs and presents a comparative study of radial magnetization (RM) and circumferential magnetization (CM) types.

Design/methodology/approach

It begins with an introduction to RM and CM operating principles and magnetization mechanisms. Then, a comparative study is conducted for one of the RM-DSMM rotor pole pairs, inner and outer stator clamping angles and low coercive force PMs thickness. Finally, the two machines’ finite element simulation performance is compared. The validity of the proposed machine structure is demonstrated.

Findings

In this paper, the double-stator structure is extended to parallel hybrid PM memory machines, and two novel DSMMs with RM and CM configurations are proposed. Two types of DSMMs have PMs and magnetizing windings on the inner stator and armature windings on the outer stator. The main difference between the two is the arrangement of PMs on the inner stator.

Originality/value

Conventional stator PM memory machines have geometrical space conflicts between the PM and armature windings. The proposed double-stator structure can alleviate these conflicts and increase the torque density accordingly. In addition, this paper contributes to comparing the arrangement of hybrid PMs for DSMMs.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to construct a flux-controlled memcapacitor (MC) emulator without grounded restriction with the binary operation ability. The active first-order low-pass filter (LPF) and high-pass filter (HPF) circuits are constructed by replacing the capacitor with MC.

Design/methodology/approach

The output saturation of the active device is innovatively adopted to realize the binary operation of MC with two memcapacitance values. By applying the direct current control voltage together with the input signal, the memcapacitance can be controlled, and hence, cut-off frequency of the filters can be adjusted without changing the circuit structure.

Findings

Experiments and simulation results show that the new filter has good frequency selectivity. Both LPF and HPF can change the cut-off frequency by changing the positive and negative control voltage. The experimental and simulation results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis, which proves the feasibility and validity of the emulator and the filters.

Originality/value

These MC emulators are simple and easy to physically fabricate, which have been increasingly used for experiment. It also provide an effective reference for device miniaturization and low power consumption.

Abstract

Purpose

The authors investigate the effects of Chinese acquirer’s chief executive officer (CEO) risk preference on mergers and acquisitions (M&A) payment method and the moderating roles played by acquirer’s ownership, industry relatedness and whether the M&A is cross-border.

Design/methodology/approach

Using 4,624 worldwide M&A deals conducted by Chinese firms from 2009 to 2021, the authors conduct multiple linear regression and ordered probit regression. And comprehensive indexes constructed based on the observed features of acquirer’s CEOs are used to be the proxy for CEO risk preference.

Findings

The results show that the higher-level Chinese acquirer’s CEO risk preference is overall positively associated with using more stock in payment. Moreover, the above relationship is strengthened if the ownership of the acquirer is state-owned.

Originality/value

The authors highlight the importance of the non-economic factors and demonstrate a relationship between the Chinese acquirer’s CEO risk preference and the M&A payment method, providing support for and enriching the upper echelons theory (UET). Moreover, the unique risk priorities of Chinese acquirers’ CEOs are revealed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce and analyze a dual-side-permanent-magnet Halbach array vernier (DSPMHV) machine and to propose methods for achieving high torque density.

Design/methodology/approach

Flux harmonics and torque characteristics are analyzed by using finite element analysis. First, a suitable pole-slot combination is selected by comparison. Second, field modulation processes of DSPMHV machine are analyzed to identify the reason for high torque density. And it is compared with dual-side-PM (DSPM) machine to analyze flux harmonic and verify the flux concentrating effect of the Halbach array.

Findings

The permanent magnet (PM) field of the DSPM machine is approximately equal to the superposition of stator-PM field and rotor-PM field, which is the reason for high torque density. And the Halbach array can reduce flux leakage and increase the amplitude of main flux harmonics, then further improves torque. Improvement of torque can be achieved by choosing right pole-slot combination, adopting DSPM machine structure, reducing flux leakage and adopting field modulation principle.

Originality/value

The DSPMHV machine with split-tooth is proposed in this paper by combining the Halbach array with DSPM structure. This paper analyzes the bidirectional field modulation process, the reason for high torque density of the DSPM machine is obtained. Comparison with the DSPM machine verifies the flux concentrating effect of Halbach array. To alleviate the magnetic saturation in part of stator teeth, this paper proposes an improved DSPMHV machine with shaped auxiliary magnet.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aimed to examine the role of knowledge sharing among member enterprises between collaborative innovation activities and innovation performance and between building information modeling (BIM) application and innovation performance in the construction supply chain.

Design/methodology/approach

The structural equation model was used in this study. First, the hypothesis of the relationship between collaborative innovation activities, BIM application, knowledge sharing and innovation performance in the construction supply chain was proposed based on experience; then, the research data were collected by investigation; finally, this hypothesis was tested through data analysis.

Findings

(1) Collaborative innovation activities in the construction supply chain had a positive impact on explicit knowledge sharing, tacit knowledge sharing and innovation performance. (2) BIM application had a positive impact on explicit knowledge sharing and innovation performance, while it had no significant impact on tacit knowledge sharing. (3) Explicit knowledge sharing had no positive effect on innovation performance, while tacit knowledge sharing had positive effect on organizational performance. (4) Tacit knowledge sharing produced partial mediating effect between collaborative innovation activities, BIM application and innovation performance, while explicit knowledge sharing produced complete mediating effect between BIM application and tacit knowledge sharing.

Originality/value

A relationship model among collaborative innovation activities, BIM application, explicit and tacit knowledge sharing and innovation performance in the construction supply chain was proposed, and the rationality of the model was verified by empirical analysis. Discovering the relationships between these factors can be not only conducive to mastering the effect of explicit and tacit knowledge sharing in the collaborative innovation process of construction supply chain, but also play a guiding role for the function development of BIM.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of vertical throughflow on the boundary layer flow and heat transfer of a nanofluid driven by a permeable stretching/shrinking surface.

Design/methodology/approach

Similarity transformation is used to convert the system of boundary layer equations into a system of ordinary differential equations. The system of governing similarity equations is then reduced to a system of first-order differential equations and solved numerically using the bvp4c function in Matlab software. The generated numerical results are presented graphically and discussed based on some governing parameters.

Findings

It is found that dual solutions exist in both cases of stretching and shrinking sheet situations. Stability analysis is performed to determine which solution is stable and valid physically.

Originality/value

Dual solutions are found for positive and negative values of the moving parameter. A stability analysis has also been performed to show that the first (upper branch) solutions are stable and physically realizable, while the second (lower branch) solutions are not stable and, therefore, not physically possible.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the development of innovation capability construct measures in the context of supply chain and to objectively identify the key dimensions for stimulating focal firms’ innovativeness.

Design/methodology/approach

The scale items for this research were obtained from extant literature. The data were collected from homogenous sample of 117 Ghanaian middle level managers (respondents). Exploratory factor analysis was used to identify the main dimensions of innovation capability. Based on the statistical analysis, four dimensions were obtained – idea management, idea implementation, collaboration and learning – and the convergent validity, discriminant validity, nomological validity and reliability tests indicate that the scales are valid and reliable

Findings

Four dimensions (factors) of innovation capability were identified from the exploratory factor analysis. These dimensions were labelled as idea management, idea implementation, collaboration and learning. The results indicate that the integration of the dimensions of innovation capability may stimulate a focal firm’s innovativeness.

Research limitations/implications

First, the measurement scale might not capture all the important dimensions of innovation capability. Second, the judgmental sampling used in this study means that the result cannot be generalised to the entire supply chain population, third, the sample was drawn from one geographical location using non-probability sampling technique.

Practical implications

The measures provide supply chain managers with a better approach of understanding the innovation capability in their supply chain. For instance, the measurement of supply chain’s innovation capability should help supply chain managers to determine the important innovation areas that need attention most and to permit them to respond to challenges posed by any kind of innovation capability dimension that needs to be enhanced.

Originality/value

The unique contribution of this paper is the development innovation capability measurement scale in the context of supply chain.

Abstract

Purpose

The external business environment of the organization is always changing at a rapid pace. For a firm to adapt to changing client requirements, it must implement the right business procedures and strategies. To improve competitive advantage, this study investigates the roles that supply chain partnerships, cross-functional integration, responsiveness and resilience play in achieving competitive advantages in Palestine.

Design/methodology/approach

Industrial institutions in Palestine constitute the study population. Data are collected by distributing surveys via Google Forms linked to manufacturers in industries such as the Leather and shoe Industry, metal industries, chemical industries, construction industries, textile industries, stone and marble industries, pharmaceutical industry, veterinary industry, food industry, plastic industry, paper industry, major advantages and disadvantages. The SEM-PLS approach is used to analyze the data.

Findings

The findings demonstrate that supply chain responsiveness, resilience and cooperation are all improved by cross-functional integration in inventory data integration and immediate operation. Supply chain partnerships improve the supply chain’s responsiveness, resilience and competitive advantage by involving partners in work teams and exchanging best practices. The enhancement of supply chain resilience and competitive advantage is influenced by the company’s capacity to act promptly in response to variations in demands.

Research limitations/implications

This paper faces some limitations and it can be drawn as follows: To enhance supply chain risk management, the study continues to concentrate on manufacturing organizations that have internal integration. It also emphasizes the necessity of supply chain integration, which establishes direct connections with outside partners.

Practical implications

The findings of this study suggest some policy implications, as follows: To provide the manufacturing sector with a competitive edge, operations supervisors must be able to track and assess processes to ensure they are meeting demand. Firms that possess the ability to adjust to novel procedures or advancements in technology gain a competitive edge by guaranteeing consistent and high-quality delivery of products.

Originality/value

By implementing IT integration, this study theoretically and practically advances the understanding of the resource-based view of competitive advantages. This study focuses on providing insights into the nature of the relationship between supply chain partnership, cross-functional integration, responsiveness and flexibility and competitive advantages in the manufacturing sector in the Palestinian market.
