Abstract

Voltage ranking attempts to rank busbar voltage deviations from their normally accepted security margins based on a set of performance indices (PI), without performing a full load flow. Existing methods suffer from either masking effects or long computation time. In this paper, an artificial neural network method is proposed for voltage ranking. Counterpropagation network (CPN) has been employed to overcome the problems listed above. A variety of input features are used with the aim of lowering the dimension of the proposed ANN to make it applicable for large power systems. The method is tested on two example systems, a five‐bus system and a 71‐bus system with very encouraging results.

Abstract

Automatic contingency selection aims to quickly predict the impact of a set of next contingencies on an electric power system without actually performing a full ac load flow. Artificial neural network methods have been employed to overcome the masking effects or slow execution associated with existing methods. However, the large number of input features for the ANN limits its applications to large power systems. In this paper, a novel feature selection method, named the Weak Nodes method, based on a heuristic approach is proposed for an ANN‐based automatic contingency selection for electric power system, especially for the voltage ranking problem. Pre‐contingency state variables of weak nodes in the power system are adopted as input features for the ANN. The method is tested on the 77 busbar NGC derived network by Counter‐propagation Method and it is proved that it reduces the input features for ANN dramatically without losing ranking accuracy.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to present a conceptual model on foreign-born health care workers from developing countries working in the US. The model covers their motivations for migration, the consequences in terms of the inequality and exclusion they may experience and the role of institutional responses at micro-, macro- and meso-level of intervention.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on: (1) in-depth review of key literature studies on the foundation theories of international migration including sociology, economics, anthropology, psychology and human resource management, (2) analysis of theoretical approaches to medical migration across disciplines, (3) analysis of the international and national documentary sources of micro-, macro- and meso-level policies on migration and (4) analysis of evidence on best practices, solutions and aspirational changes across different levels of institutions.

Findings

(1) Migration of international medical graduates (IMGs) from developing countries to the US can be explained from a micro-, macro- and meso-level of analysis. (2) IMGs who identify as racial/ethnic minorities may experience unfair discrimination differently than their US-born counterparts. (3) Although political/legislative remedies have had some successes, proactive initiatives will be needed alongside enforcement strategies to achieve equity and inclusion. (4) While diversity management initiatives abound in organizations, those designed for the benefit of IMGs from developing countries are rare. (5) Professional identity groups and some nonprofits may challenge structural inequities, but these have not yet achieved economies of scale.

Research limitations/implications

Although it is well-documented in the US health care literature how ethnic/racial minorities are unfairly disadvantaged in work and career, the studies are rarely disaggregated according to sub-groups (e.g. non-White IMGs and US-born MGs). The implication is that Black IMG immigrants have been overlooked by the predominant narratives of native-born, Black experiences. In placing the realities of native-born Blacks on the entire Black population in America, data have ignored and undermined the diverse histories, identities and experiences of this heterogeneous group.

Practical implications

An awareness of the challenges IMGs from developing countries face have implications for managerial decisions regarding recruitment and selection. Besides their medical qualifications, IMGs from developing countries offer employers additional qualities that are critical to success in health care delivery. Considering organizations traditionally favor White immigrants from Northern and Southern Europe, IMGs from developed countries migrate to the US under relatively easier circumstances. It is important to balance the scale in the decision-making process by including an evaluation of migration antecedents in comprehensive selection criteria.

Social implications

The unfair discrimination faced by IMGs who identify as racial/ethnic minority are multilayered and will affect them in ways that are different compared to their US-born counterparts. In effect, researchers need to make this distinction in research on racial discrimination. Since IMGs are not all uniformly impacted by unfair discrimination, organization-wide audits should be in tune with issues that are of concerns to IMGs who identify as racial/ethnic minorities. Likewise, diversity management strategies should be more inclusive and should not ignore the intersectionality of race/ethnicity, nationality, country of qualification and gender.

Originality/value

Immigrant health care workers from developing countries are integral to the health care industry in the United States. They make up a significant proportion of all workers in the health care industry in the US. Although the literature is replete with studies on immigrant health care workers as a whole, research has rarely focused on immigrant health care workers from developing countries. The paper makes a valuable contribution in drawing attention to this underappreciated group, given their critical role in the ongoing pandemic and the need for the US health industry to retain their services to remain viable in the future.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the latest approaches in integrating artificial intelligence and analytics (AIA) in energy smart grid projects. Empirical results are synthesized to highlight their relevance from a technology and project management standpoint, identifying several lessons learned that can be used for planning highly integrated and automated smart grid projects.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review leads to selecting 108 research articles dealing with smart grids and AIA applications. Keywords are based on the following research questions: What is the growth trend in Smart Grid projects using intelligent systems and data analytics? What business value is offered when AI-based methods are applied? How do applications of intelligent systems combine with data analytics? What lessons can be learned for Smart Grid and AIA projects?

Findings

The 108 selected articles are classified according to the following four research issues in smart grids project management: AIA integrated applications; AI-focused technologies; analytics-focused technologies; architecture and design methods. A broad set of smart grid functionality is reviewed, seeking to find commonality among several applications, including as follows: dynamic energy management; automation of extract, transform and load for Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems data; multi-level representations of data; the relationship between the standard three-phase transforms and modern data analytics; real-time or short-time voltage stability assessment; smart city architecture; home energy management system; building energy consumption; automated fault and disturbance analysis; and power quality control.

Originality/value

Given the diversity of issues reviewed, a more capability-focused research agenda is needed to further synthesize empirical findings for AI-based smart grids. Research may converge toward more focus on business rules systems, that may best support smart grid design, proof development, governance and effectiveness. These AIA technologies must be further integrated with smart grid project management methodologies and enable a greater diversity of renewable and non-renewable production sources.

Abstract

Purpose

The connection between digital manufacturing technologies (Industry 4.0) and the environment has sparked discussions on firms' disclosure of negative information on pollutant emissions and the pursuit of positive environmental outcomes. However, very few studies explore how it relates to a firm's robot usage and its mechanism. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impacts of robot penetration on firms' environmental governance in China.

Design/methodology/approach

The ordered probit model (and probit model) are employed and empirically tested with a sample of 1,579 Chinese listed firms from 2010 to 2019.

Findings

The study reveals a negative relationship between robot usage and the disclosure of negative indicators and a U-shaped relationship between robot usage and positive environmental outcomes. Among the sample, nonstate-owned enterprises (SOEs) display unsatisfactory performance, while heavily polluting industries disclose more information on pollutant emissions. The robot–environmental governance nexus is conditional on firm size, capital intensity and local economic development.

Originality/value

The study proposes a fresh view of corporate environmental governance to assess the environmental implications of robot adoption. It also contributes to identifying the curvilinear, moderating and heterogenous effects in the robot–environment nexus. The results provide rich policy implications for the development of industrial intelligence and corporate environmental governance in the circular economy (CE) context.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to optimize the degradation test for products subject to multiple types of inherent stresses and external random shocks. The mechanism that shows how the variables to be optimized influence the considered multiple objectives is also aimed to be explored by using the grey incidence analysis (GIA) model.

Design/methodology/approach

The Gamma process is employed to model the influences of different types of stresses and external random shocks. The GIA model is introduced to transfer multiple considered objectives as a comprehensive degree of grey incidence. The particle swarm optimization is integrated to search the globally optimal value of the characteristic variables to be optimized.

Findings

The acceleration of tested stresses and external random shocks both make the engineering systems become more vulnerable to the inherent degradation. And, the Kriging model can provide guidance of searching the optimal values of test characteristic variables and mitigate the computation burden. The grey incidence model can make the optimization focused and improve the optimality of objective values.

Originality/value

The proposed method can effectively overcome the drawbacks brought by the limitation of test data and can specify the dependence strength between the inherent degradation and external random shock. The computation cost and accuracy of optimization can be simultaneously ensured by the proposed model.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a finite element analysis (FEA) of filament-wound composites, as well as application of these materials.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a new finite element method of filament-wound composite is presented. The stress and strain fields in the composite cylinders are analyzed using the ABAQUS software packages for considering the filament undulation and crossover. The paper presented results of buckling load of composite cylinders with different types of filament-winding patterns.

Findings

The result of the example shows that the stress distributions are uniform along the cylinder length and around the circumference when the analytical approach is based on the conventional FEA. The stress distributions are not uniform along the cylinder length and around the circumference for considering the filament undulation and crossover. The stress units are arranged in a regular geometric pattern around circumference and along the axis of rotation. The analysis of the effect of filament-winding mosaic patterns on the mechanical characteristics of composite cylindrical is presented in the paper.

Originality/value

The stress and strain fields in the composite cylinders were analyzed for considering the filament undulation and crossover. The buckling load of composite cylinders with different types of filament-winding patterns was presented in this paper.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a methodology to construct a stock market sentiment lexicon by incorporating domain-specific knowledge extracted from diverse Chinese media outlets.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents a novel method to automatically generate financial lexicons using a unique data set that comprises news articles, analyst reports and social media. Specifically, a novel method based on keyword extraction is used to build a high-quality seed lexicon and an ensemble mechanism is developed to integrate the knowledge derived from distinct language sources. Meanwhile, two different methods, Pointwise Mutual Information and Word2vec, are applied to capture word associations. Finally, an evaluation procedure is performed to validate the effectiveness of the method compared with four traditional lexicons.

Findings

The experimental results from the three real-world testing data sets show that the ensemble lexicons can significantly improve sentiment classification performance compared with the four baseline lexicons, suggesting the usefulness of leveraging knowledge derived from diverse media in domain-specific lexicon generation and corresponding sentiment analysis tasks.

Originality/value

This work appears to be the first to construct financial sentiment lexicons from over 2m posts and headlines collected from more than one language source. Furthermore, the authors believe that the data set established in this study is one of the largest corpora used for Chinese stock market lexicon acquisition. This work is valuable to extract collective sentiment from multiple media sources and provide decision-making support for stock market participants.

Abstract

Word‐of‐mouth is a powerful communication tool which is often beyond the control of the marketer. This study used a 3 x 2 x 2 factorial experiment in a laboratory simulation to examine the main and interaction effects of three independent variables — message, source and user‐type — on credibility and behavior intention. The experiment involved 1,440 respondents from two different demographic sample groupings — secondary school students and undergraduates. ANOVA results for the experiments showed that, generally, source and user‐type were found to be significant factors affecting the credibility of word‐of‐mouth. In terms of source, father was perceived to be more credible than close friend as a word‐of‐mouth source. Likewise, past users were found to be more credible than non‐past users. Message was, however, found to affect significantly the behavioral intention variable. Negative message was found to generate the strongest negative behavioral intention than positive message and two‐sided messages. Two‐sided message was also found to have a stronger effect than positive message in behavioral intention. In addition, t‐tests results also revealed significant differences in perceptions between the two samples.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on the resource-based view, institutional logic and isomorphic pressure theories, this study constructed a theoretical model to explore the correlations between government subsidies and innovation performance. Particularly, this study aims to investigate the moderating effects of ownership types and degree of internationalization on these relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

To empirically test the relationships, the authors use panel data from high-tech manufacturing and automobile manufacturing industries in Chinese A stock listed companies for the period 2011–2015 and performed regression analysis.

Findings

Results indicate that government subsidies positively enhance enterprises’ innovation performance; there is a big gap between government subsidies’ incentive effect on innovation performance between state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and private-owned enterprises (POEs); with the improvement of internationalization, the promotion effect of government subsidies on enterprise innovation performance is strengthened; there is a three-way interaction between government subsidies, degree of internationalization and ownership types, such that in the presence of a low degree of internationalization, there is a big gap in the incentive effect of government subsidies on the innovation performance of SOEs and POEs; in the presence of a high degree of internationalization, the gap is significantly reduced.

Originality/value

This is an empirical study on the impact mechanism of ownership types and internationalization on the relationship between government subsidies and innovation performance in China. It provides valuable insights to show how internationalization can dramatically improve SOEs’ efficiency disadvantages in the allocation of government subsidies to innovation activities.
