Abstract

Electromagnetic problems The electromagnetic theory has been fully developed into a mathematical equation system by Maxwell in which he succeeded to explain all physical phenomena. One could ask why after 200 years it is still impossible to accurately solve these equations. The explanation is given by the fact that a solution in a closed form is impossible due to the presence of anisotropic, non‐linear materials with a difficult geometrical shape. Until the sixties, emphasis in clectromagnetism was on finding extremely difficult test functions, offering a solution for a limited category of problems. Examples are the rotating field theory in electrical machines and the wave equations in high voltage line transients.

Abstract

A special shell for a general purpose FEM package (MagNet) for the electromagnetic CAD of axisymmetric devices is presented. The basic idea of the shell is that a script file may be quickly and easily created for every basic design. Then the whole FEM solution procedure is conducted automatically. Any design changes can be easily and quickly made and a whole sequence of CAD tasks can be prepared and run automatically without any user intervention. An open boundary technique is built into the shell to deal with unbounded problems.

Abstract

There is an unbalanced magnetic pull between the rotor and stator of the cage induction motor when the rotor is not concentric with the stator. These forces depend on the position and motion of the centre point of the rotor. In this paper, the linearity of the forces in proportion to the rotor eccentricity is studied numerically using time‐stepping finite element analysis. The results show that usually the forces are linear in proportion to the rotor eccentricity. However, the closed rotor slots may break the spatial linearity at some operation conditions of the motor.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this research paper is to examine the bio‐inspired optimization algorithms, namely, genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO) and bacterial foraging optimization (BFO) algorithm with adaptive chemotactic step for determining the steady‐state equivalent circuit parameters of the three‐phase induction motor using a set of manufacturer data.

Design/methodology/approach

The induction motor parameter determination issue is devised as a nonlinear constrained optimization problem. The nonlinear equations of various quantities (torque, current and power factor) are derived in terms of equivalent circuit parameters from a single and a double‐cage model, and then, equates to the corresponding manufacturer data. These equations are solved by the bio‐inspired algorithms. Using the squared error between the determined and the manufacturer data as the objective function, the parameter determination problem is transferred into an optimization process where the model parameters are determined that minimize the defined objective function. The objective function is iteratively minimized using GA, PSO and BFO techniques. In order to balance the exploration and exploitation searches of the BFO algorithm, an adaptive chemotactic step is utilized.

Findings

Comparisons of the results of GA, PSO, BFO and IEEE Std. 112‐F (using no‐load, locked‐rotor and stator resistance tests) methods for two sample motors are presented. Results show the superiority of the bio‐inspired optimization algorithms over the classical one. Besides, BFO‐based parameter determination method is observed to obtain better quality solutions quickly than GA and PSO methods.

Practical implications

The parameters obtained by the proposed approaches can be used in analyzing the stalling and/or reacceleration process of a loaded motor following a fault or during voltage sag condition as well as in system‐level studies.

Originality/value

The most significant contribution of the research is the potential to determine the equivalent circuit parameters of induction motor only from its manufacturer data without conducting any lab tests on the motor. The bio‐inspired optimization based parameter determination approaches are faster and less intrusive than the IEEE Std. 112‐F method.

Abstract

Purpose

To propose an air‐gap element for electrical machine simulation which accounts for static and dynamic rotor eccentricity.

Design/methodology/approach

The air‐gap element technique is extended to account for a non‐centered rotor. The consistency, stability and convergence of the discretisation error are studied. A specialized efficient solution technique combining the conjugate gradient algorithm with fast Fourier transforms is developed.

Findings

The eccentric air‐gap technique offers better discretisation properties than the classical techniques based on remeshing. Thanks to the specialized solver, the computation times remain comparable.

Originality/value

The introduction of eccentricity in the air‐gap element used for finite element electrical machine simulation is a new development.

Abstract

Purpose

Due to the increasing population and prosperity, the generation rate of municipal solid waste (MSW) has increased significantly, resulting in serious problems on public health and the environment. Every single person in the world is affected by the municipal solid waste management (MSWM) issue. MSWM is reaching a critical level in almost all areas of the world and seeking the development of MSW strategies for a sustainable environment. This paper aims to present the existing global status of MSW generation, composition, management and related problems.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 59 developed and developing countries have been grouped based on their gross national income to compare the status of various MSWM technologies among them. A total of 19 selection criteria have been discussed to select appropriate MSWM technology(s) for a city/town, which affects their applicability, operational suitability and performance. All risks and challenges arising during the life cycle of the waste to energy (WtE) project have also been discussed. This paper also gives a comparative overview of different globally accepted MSWM technologies and the present market growth of all WtE technologies.

Findings

It was found that most developed countries have effectively implemented the solid waste management (SWM) hierarchy and are now focusing heavily on reducing, reusing and recycling of MSW. On the other hand, SWM has become very serious in low-income and low-middle-income countries because most of the MSW openly dumps and most countries are dependent on inadequate waste infrastructure and the informal sector. There are also some other major challenges related to effective waste policies, availability of funds, appropriate technology selection and adequacy of trained people. This study clears the picture of MSW generation, composition, management strategies and policies at the worldwide context. This manuscript could be valuable for all nations around the world where effective MSWM has not yet been implemented.

This study clears the picture of solid waste generation, composition, management strategies and policies at the worldwide context. This manuscript could be valuable for all nations around the world where effective MSWM has not yet been implemented. In this study, no data was generated. All supporting data were obtained from previously published papers in journals, the outcomes of the international conferences and published reports by government organizations.
