Abstract

The article covers the five‐year history of the implementation of Z39.50‐type products in Russia. All existing projects are mentioned in the order of their development. Since the authors are from RUSLANet, that project is described in greater detail. The architecture of a distributed library system, as well as its basic components, are presented, and the place and role of Z39.50 facilities in Russian libraries are highlighted. The obstacles the Russian library community faces in moving to a networked environment are covered. The need to develop uniquely Russian Z39.50 databases grew from specific document‐ processing features within the libraries. Some prospects for future development and use of Z39.50 environment in Russian libraries are also given.

Abstract

This paper is about advanced library information systems in Russia. The urgent need is obvious in Russia for library systems based on open standards and Internet technology, and for integrating library systems in common library information space. The Regional University and Science Library Advanced Network in the north‐west of Russia (RUSLANet) Project is an initiative of St Petersburg State Technical University, aimed at joining the collections of university libraries and providing access to them via the Internet. The paper discusses briefly the concept of the RUSLANet Project, ways of implementing it, its position today, and plans for the near future.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the design experience of creation of passenger airplane families. Methods of taking into account future modifications for family creation during the design of the basic airplane are proposed.

Design/methodology/approach

Trend analysis of airplane data was based on available statistics and previous research results by using a systematic approach. Proposed methods are based on practical experience and aircraft design theory.

Findings

The paper provides the results of analysis of creation of passenger airplane families. It suggests that reserves should be allocated during design of the first family member to ensure successful creation of other members. A method based on aircraft fleet optimization is suggested for determining these reserves.

Research limitations/implications

The field of research connected to aircraft fleet creation methods still remains largely unexplored. The paper presents a systematic general concept, which the researchers are encouraged to develop further (e.g. for aircraft of different types and purpose than presented in the paper).

Practical implications

The paper proposes transferring from “point optimization” of aircraft during early design stages to inclusion of reserves into the project, which would be used for aircraft family creation.

Originality/value

The paper studies the problem of taking into account the necessity for airplane family creation during the early stages of airplane design and offers an approach to its solution. It could be of interest to aircraft design specialists.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the current situation and history of cooperation and resource sharing in Russian libraries. The resources and services provided cooperatively are described.

Design/methodology/approach

A narrative combining description, surveys, analysis and evaluation.

Findings

Fundamental changes have occurred in Russian libraries as a result of the development of consortia services development, particularly in resource sharing.

Research limitations/implications

Digital libraries and databases subscriptions were not within the scope of this study.

Social implications

The paper demonstrates the efforts of many libraries cooperatively producing services at a national level.

Originality/value

One of the few articles to describe the current state of resource sharing and consortia development in Russia.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this work is to determine dependence of the separative power of the Iguassu gas centrifuge (GC) on the velocity of the rotor.

Design/methodology/approach

The dependence is determined by means of computer simulation of the gas flow in the GC and numerical solution of the diffusion equation for the light component of the binary mixture of uranium isotopes. 2D axisymmetric model with the sources/sinks of the mass, angular momentum and energy reproducing the scoops was explored for the computer simulation. Parameters of the model correspond to the parameters of the so-called Iguassu centrifuge. The separative power has been optimised in relation to the pressure of the gas, temperature of the gas, the temperature drop along the rotor, power of the source of angular momentum and energy, feed flow and geometry of the lower baffle.

Findings

In the result, the optimised separative power depends only on the velocity, length and diameter of the rotor. The dependence on the velocity is described by the power law function with the power law index 2.6 which demonstrate stronger dependence on the velocity than it follows from experimental data. However, the separative power obtained with limitation on the pressure growth with the velocity depends on the velocity on the power ∼ 2 which well agree with the experiments.

Originality/value

For the first time, the optimised separative power of the GCs have been calculated via numerical simulation of the gas flow and diffusion of the binary mixture of isotope.
