Abstract
Purpose
In the past decade, there has been growing awareness of well-being and its importance and an increase in the development of activities or programmes aimed at improving well-being. The purpose of this study is to investigate what well-being programmes were being offered to prisoners in England and Wales and what benefits and other outcomes were experienced.
Design/methodology/approach
The study used a mixed-methods exploratory design in two phases. Phase 1 was a questionnaire survey of all adult prisons in England and Wales, completed by prison staff. In Phase 2, a sample of survey respondents took part in in-depth interviews.
Findings
The programmes identified in Phase 1 included physical activities, creative arts, mindfulness, horticulture, reading and animal-assisted activities. Prison staff reported a range of universally positive outcomes shared by all programmes, including enthusiasm from prisoners, enjoyment of the activities and being able to do something different from the usual prison routine. However, in Phase 2, interviewees rarely mentioned direct health and well-being benefits. The impetus for programmes was varied and there was little reference to national policy on health and well-being; this reflected the ad hoc way in which programmes are developed, with a key role being played by the Well-being Officer, where these were funded.
Originality/value
The literature on well-being programmes in prisons is limited and tends to focus on specific types of initiatives, often in a single prison. This study contributes by highlighting the range of activities across prisons and elucidating the perspectives of those involved in running such programmes.

Man has been seeking an ideal existence for a very long time. In this existence, justice, love, and peace are no longer words, but actual experiences. How ever, with the American preemptive invasion and occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq and the subsequent prisoner abuse, such an existence seems to be farther and farther away from reality. The purpose of this work is to stop this dangerous trend by promoting justice, love, and peace through a change of the paradigm that is inconsistent with justice, love, and peace. The strong paradigm that created the strong nation like the U.S. and the strong man like George W. Bush have been the culprit, rather than the contributor, of the above three universal ideals. Thus, rather than justice, love, and peace, the strong paradigm resulted in in justice, hatred, and violence. In order to remove these three and related evils, what the world needs in the beginning of the third millenium is the weak paradigm. Through the acceptance of the latter paradigm, the golden mean or middle paradigm can be formulated, which is a synergy of the weak and the strong paradigm. In order to understand properly the meaning of these paradigms, however, some digression appears necessary.

This article explores the size‐growth relationship for a panel of large US credit unions, using the panel unit root tests of Im et al. (2003) and Maddala and Wu (1999). The reference point is Gibrat’s Law, or the Law of Proportionate Effect, according to which firm growth rates are independent of firm sizes. The panel unit root tests are applied to the log as sets and log membership series of a sample of 997 surviving credit unions which reported data over the period 1993 to 2002. In each case the panel unit root tests fail to reject the null hypothesis of non‐stationarity in the logarithmic size series for all credit unions. The implication is that credit union sizes follow random walks, producing a tendency for industry concentration to increase in the long term. With many of the largest institutions currently offering portfolios of products and services similar to those of commercial banks and other financial institutions, these implications of the panel unit root test results appear consistent with observed patterns within the sector in recent years.

In this paper, we model histories of coresidence between two cohorts of urban Chinese couples, married during the Cultural Revolution and early market reform periods. Most research on coresidence pictures families cross‐sectionally, but nuclear households are a natural part of extended coresidence systems that prefer stem family arrangements. We study histories of coresidence to determine what predicts ever having coresided with the husband’s parents, comparing the predictive power of modernization theory to the impact of demographic change, the availability of household members, and the resources and needs of each generation. While married children’s needs for childcare do not propel them into coresidence, they strongly predict the likelihood of staying coresident.

The Behavioural Finance contests the modern financial theory statements, specially the rationality conception of the market as well as the agent behaviour. For the Behavioural Finance, the human being is susceptible to make mistakes and often acts under “irrational” and passional impulses. This article describes, comparatively, the Behavioural Finance and the modern finance theory investigating precisely the aversion feeling to loss under the investor view. The comprehension of the aversion feeling of loss is deepened from psychoanalytical theory contribution. As the aversion feeling to loss constitutes an aspect of the human subjectivity and cannot be explained just through quantification, the qualitative methodology was used. It was investigated about the influence meanings, experienced by the investors.
