Abstract

Tertiary education institutions (TEIs) are constituting TQM to aim for quality teaching, learning and research work. In the laboratories, practical learning and research are carried out, and they have to be backed up by quality support services. The Laboratory Centre of the Faculty of Science & Technology, City University of Hong Kong (FLC) is the support services provider for the Faculty laboratories. As a pilot, two support services: maintenance of the network of fume cupboards and equipment calibration were selected to apply for the ISO 9002 certification. In April 1997 the Certificate was awarded. This paper discusses the importance and shows the feasibility of implementing quality management system to laboratory support services in TEIs. The differences with similar certification in the private and public sectors are compared, and the benefits derived are outlined.

Abstract

This paper seeks to explore linguistic nuances in responses to the definition of marketing for entrepreneurs in technology and non‐technology firms located in the US and UK. The present study focuses on an open ended marketing question and applies a hermeneutic analysis to the data. The results appear to suggest that differences exist between US and their UK counterparts on how they define marketing, such that UK firms “individualize” their application of marketing while the US firms “professionalize” the function.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to compare the learning outcomes of gaming simulation and guided inquiry in sustainability education on plastic waste management. The current study targets the identification of success factors in these teaching approaches.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a quasi-experimental design with undergraduate participants who were randomly assigned to an eight-hour sustainability education class using either gaming simulation or guided inquiry. Pre- and post-tests on students’ knowledge, attitudes and intended behavior were conducted, followed by individual interviews to provide more detailed reflections on the teaching approach to which they were assigned.

Findings

In terms of knowledge acquisition and behavioral changes, the quantitative results suggested that the pre-/post-test in-group differences were significant in both groups. More importantly, a significant positive attitudinal change was observed in the gaming simulation group only. In the interviews, participants attributed effective knowledge acquisition to active learning element in class, while the characterization of cognitive dissonance triggered in the gaming simulation induced subsequent affective changes.

Practical implications

Activities in this program can be applied or modified to accommodate differences in other similar programs. The findings can also provide indicators to designs of similar programs in the future.

Originality/value

This paper explores plausible factors (ideology and implementation) that contribute to successful sustainability education programs. Through comparison between gaming simulation and guided inquiry, elements for effective education for sustainable development learning in the pedagogical designs are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to examine the roles of five drivers of service quality (tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy) and perceived winning in the gaming behavior of table game players; and second, to test the moderating effects of table game players' demographic and situational factors (gender, education level, parenting status, and proximity to a casino).

Design/methodology/approach

A review of the current literature in the above‐mentioned areas revealed 13 theoretical hypotheses, from which the authors derived a structural model. The model was tested utilizing data collected from 383 US casino patrons that primarily played table games during visits to casinos. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were utilized to test the proposed theoretical relationships.

Findings

The results indicate that various dimensions of perceived service quality (including tangibles, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy) in casinos, as well as casino patrons' perceived winning have considerable influence on their satisfaction. Brand affect and game spending were found to be influenced by the patron satisfaction with table games. The relationship between perceived empathy and table game satisfaction was stronger for females than for males; the relationship between perceived winning and table game satisfaction was stronger for those with lower levels of formal education; and the relationship between table game satisfaction and game spending was stronger for table game players without children and for those residing near a casino.

Originality/value

This study provides an empirical analysis of the effects of perceived service quality at table games and perceived winning on table game players' satisfaction, brand affect, and game spending. The results of this study may be utilized to aid casino operators to better tailor their marketing efforts and improve returns on investments.

Abstract

Purpose

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has resulted in traveling restrictions and decreased the demand among travelers since the end of 2019. Policies and people’s behaviors are gradually changing with the increase in the number of new diagnoses of COVID-19. Tourism increases tourists’ risk of contracting COVID-19 and will undoubtedly be affected by this disease. Based on this assumption and social cognitive theory, this paper aims to explore the impact of COVID-19 on tourism in terms of people’s willingness to travel.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on social cognitive theory, this study has designed the model and variables. The data of the paper came from a survey conducted in 29 provinces of China and a total of 618 responses were used for data analysis after deleting invalid questionnaires. Drawing on the structural equation modeling method, this paper processes the data collected from questionnaires to test the hypotheses and come to the results.

Findings

The results indicate that the negative impact of COVID-19 will affect the severity perceptions, personal negative effects and positive effects of tourism during the outbreak, which will ultimately influence people’s willingness to travel. During the outbreak of COVID-19, impacted by environmental factors and personal factors, Chinese people’s willingness to travel has been significantly reduced.

Research limitations/implications

This study mainly focuses on people’s willingness to travel and the demand side of tourism to analyze the effects of COVID-19 on tourism, which neglects the supply side of tourism for analysis. Subsequent research should take account of the supply side of tourism and expanding the sample size worldwide to determine the impact of COVID-19 on the tourism industry from a broader perspective.

Originality/value

This study quantitatively analyzes how COVID-19 influenced the tourism industry and precisely determines the possible mechanism of the effect of COVID-19 on tourism by using social cognitive theory to build a model. The insights from the work help to understand how COVID-19 affects people’s willingness to travel during the pandemic and how to address this issue.

新冠疫情如何从旅游意愿方面影响旅游业?来自中国的实证研究¿目的

新型冠状病毒(COVID-19)自2019年底以来开始被发现, 随后逐渐蔓延至全球, 给人们的生活带来不小的影响。该病毒的发展使得人们的出行受到了较大的限制, 因而减少了人们对于旅游的需求。随着新冠疫情确诊人数的增加, 政府政策和人们的行为也处在变化之中。基于这一假设和社会认知理论, 本文旨在从人们的旅游意愿角度探究新冠疫情对旅游业的影响。

设计/方法学/方法

本文所设计的变量和模型是在社会认知理论的基础之上提出的。本研究的数据来源于面向中国29个省市自治区的问卷调查。在剔除无效问卷后, 总共搜集618份有效问卷进行数据分析。本研究采用了结构方程模型, 对假设进行检验、并得出最终结论。

发现

研究结果表明, 新冠疫情带来的负面影响会增加人们对疫情严重性的认知程度、疫情期间旅游给人带来的负面影响增大、正面影响减少, 从而最终影响人们的旅游意愿。在新冠疫情之下, 受到环境、个人因素的影响, 人们的旅游意愿显著降低。

研究局限/意义

本研究的数据均来源于中国, 所以将本文的结论应用于其他地区时, 由于不同地区的自然和社会环境差异, 结论可能会产生差异。本研究主要聚焦于人们旅游意愿的变化, 即旅游业的需求端, 来分析新冠疫情对旅游业的影响, 忽视了旅游业的供给端在新冠疫情期间对旅游业的影响分析。后续的研究可以考虑从旅游业供给端的变化进行分析、以及将样本数量扩大到全球范围, 从而可以从更广阔的视角来探究新冠疫情对旅游业的影响。

创新点/价值

本研究定量分析了新冠疫情如何影响旅游业, 并利用社会认知理论建立模型来精确判断这一影响的可能机理。本文的发现有助于了解新冠疫情如何影响人们在疫情行期间旅行的意愿, 以及制定相关的应对措施。

Cómo afecta COVID-19 al turismo a través de la disposición de las personas a viajar? Evidencia empírica de ChinaPropósito

El coronavirus (COVID-19) se descubrió desde finales de 2019 y luego se extendió gradualmente a todo el mundo, lo que tuvo un gran impacto en la vida de las personas. La propaganda del coronavirus ha provocado muchas restricciones en los viajes de las personas, por lo tanto, reducía la demanda de viaje de las personas. Con el aumento en el número de casos confirmados de COVID-19, las políticas gubernamentales y el comportamiento de las personas también se están cambiando. Basado en esta hipótesis y teoría cognitiva social, este artículo tiene como objetivo explorar el impacto del COVID-19 en el turismo desde la perspectiva de la disposición de las personas a viajar.

Diseño/Metodología/Método

Las variables y modelos diseñados en este artículo se proponen sobre la base de la teoría cognitiva social. Los datos para este estudio provienen de las encuestas por cuestionario de 29 provincias, municipios y regiones autónomas de China. Después de excluir los cuestionarios no válidos, se recopilaron un total de 618 cuestionarios válidos para el análisis de datos. En este estudio, se utiliza el modelo de ecuación estructural y la prueba de la hipótesis, al final llegar a la conclusión.

Encuentro

El resultado de la investigación muestra que el impacto negativo del COVID-19 aumenta la conciencia de las personas sobre la gravedad de la epidemia, y el impacto negativo del turismo durante la epidemia se aumenta y el impacto positivo se disminuye, lo que al fianl afecta la disposición de las personas a viajar. Bajo el COVID-19, afectada por factores ambientales y personales, la disposición de las personas a viajar se ha reducido significativamente.

Limitaciones/Significados de la investigación

Los datos de este estudio son todos de China, por lo que cuando las conclusiones de este artículo se aplican a otras regiones, las conclusiones pueden diferir debido a las diferencias en los entornos naturales y sociales de diferentes regiones. Esta investigación se centra principalmente en el cambio del deseo de viajar de las personas, es decir, el lado de la demanda del turismo, para analizar el impacto del COVID-19, por eso ignora el análisis del impacto de la oferta turística en el turismo durante el COVID-19. Los estudios posteriores se pueden considerar desde el aspecto de analizar los cambios en el lado de la oferta del turismo y expandir el número de muestras a una escala global, por lo tanto, se puede explorar el impacto del COVID-19 desde una perspectiva más amplia.

Punto/Valor de innovación

El encuentro de este artículo ayuda a comprender cómo el COVID-19 afecta la disposición de las personas a viajar durante la epidemia y a formular medidas de respuesta relevantes.

Transformational, charismatic, and related leadership theories play an important role in understanding how leaders motivate better performance. However, these approaches have paid surprisingly little attention to the management of error in organizations. In fact, current studies in transformational leadership tend to define the management of error as one of the negative features of leadership. Preventing error and learning from error is a high profile leadership role in a wide variety of global industries, and therefore, it is important that leadership theories encompass this critical task. We draw on different streams of research to provide a more integrated and positive approach to leadership and the management error. Studies of error management culture provide insights into the organizational systems that are important for responding and learning from error. We discuss how error learning culture can inform the leadership behaviors that will enhance learning from error. We also draw on regulatory focus theory to show how managing error can be differentiated from other leadership activities. The integration of these ideas with current leadership theory provides a more comprehensive framework for understanding the role of leadership when error management is critical. We present this integrated framework and discuss how cultural factors are likely to shape the role of error management in a variety of global contexts.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to establish the mediating role of Perceived Service Quality on the relationship between Retail Atmospherics and Retail Store Patronage of Supermarkets in Emerging Economies using empirical evidence from Uganda.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used a cross-sectional research design and quantitative approach to understand stand the structured reality of Retail Store Patronage of supermarkets in context of emerging economies. In the context of this study, the data were drawn from Uganda's supermarkets. A sample of 1,504 customers were selected from 136,270 customers. Data was collected from supermarket customers using closed ended questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistics were derived to describe the behavior of customers and draw conclusions on population using sample statistics. Correlation analysis was used to establish the degree of association between the variables. Hierarchical regression was applied to assess the unique contribution of each variable; control variables-income and age, predictor variables – Retail Atmospherics and Perceived Service Quality on dependent variable – Retail Store Patronage. Mediation was done following the four-step procedures of mediation of Baron and Kenny (1986).

Findings

The results revealed significant positive relationship between Retail Atmospherics, Perceived Service Quality and Retail Store Patronage, confirming the direct hypotheses. Perceived Service Quality partially mediated the relationship between Retail Atmospherics and Retail Store Patronage. The findings depict that Retail Store Patronage is influenced directly by Retail Atmospherics and indirectly through Perceived Service Quality as a mediating variable. However, in situations where the atmospherics is good but perceived service quality is poor, Retail Store Patronage may not be fully realized.

Originality/value

The study provides information that is relevant for filling the practical and theoretical gap in the Retail Store Patronage in Ugandan supermarkets. Previous research studies investigated patronage behavior of shoppers in single retail units yet there is paucity of research on patronage behavior across different retail formats in the world. This study can be generalized and have strategic implications to developing economies that seek to grow and sustain their businesses. It points to the gaps that are normally overlooked and could lead business failure. The focus of most previous studies were on developed economies more especially Europe and America. This study in particular focused on the role of perceived service quality in the relationship between retail atmospherics and customer retail store patronage in emerging economies like Uganda as a testing ground.

Abstract

Purpose

Purchasing behaviors have been studied in various countries. Previous studies involving consumer decision-making styles for sport products have only been seen in one country in order to either identify factors of Purchase Style Inventory for Sport Products (PSISP) or classify consumer shopping behaviors. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to identify consumers’ decision-making styles (shopping styles) for sport products from Japanese, Singaporean, and Taiwanese college-aged consumers.

Design/methodology/approach

The scale of PSISP was adapted to measure consumer decision-making styles (shopping styles) for sport products. This instrument is composed of 35 items under nine dimensions. CFA, 3 (Nationality) × 2 (Gender) MANOVA and ANOVA were employed.

Findings

According to the results of this study, there were significant different decision-making styles among three different countries in East Asia. Overall, Japanese male and female college-aged students exhibited higher brand consciousness than Singaporean and Taiwanese males and females.

Research limitations/implications

As consumers from different countries show different lifestyle, education, economic, religion, and culture, they might have their unique shopping styles. Therefore, the dimensions related to decision-making styles need to be explored, and the scale needs to be validated using a substantial sport industry sample in the future study.

Practical implications

This study helps East Asian advertisers or markets to rethink and develop appropriate marketing strategies as well as to understand the different decision-making styles of local consumers and better approach new and existing consumer markets.

Originality/value

This paper is important for international sports marketers to predict consumer shopping patterns and maintain proper inventory levels, particularly when marketing in global markets.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the growing concern about employees' well-being, numerous researchers have investigated the causes and effects of occupational stress. However, a review study on identifying existing research topics and gaps is still deficient in the extant literature. To fill this gap, this review study aims to present a bibliometric and science mapping approach to review the state-of-the-art journal articles published on occupational stress in the construction industry.

Design/methodology/approach

A three-fold comprehensive review approach consisting of bibliometric review, scientometric analysis and in-depth qualitative discussion was employed to review 80 journal articles in Scopus.

Findings

Through qualitative discussions, mainstream research topics were summarized, research gaps were identified and future research directions were proposed as follows: versatile stressors and stress model; an extended subgroup of factors in safety behavior; adaptation of multiple biosensors and bio-feedbacks; evaluation and comparison of organizational stress interventions; and incorporation of artificial intelligence and smart technologies into occupational stress management in construction.

Originality/value

The findings of this review study present a well-rounded framework to identify the research gaps in this field to advance research in the academic community and enhance employees' well-being in construction.
