Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to conduct a comparative study of the surface modifications induced by two different lasers on a 2050‐T8 aluminum alloy, with a specific consideration of residual stress and work‐hardening levels.

Design/methodology/approach

Two lasers have been used for Laser shock peening (LSP) treatment in water‐confined regime: a Continuum Powerlite Plus laser, operating at 0.532 mm with 9 ns laser pulses, and near 1.5mm spot diameters; a new generation Gaia‐R Thales laser delivering 10 J‐10 ns impacts, with 4‐6mm homogeneous laser spots at 1.06 mm. Surface deformation, work‐hardening levels and residual stresses were analyzed for both LSP conditions. Residual stresses were compared with numerical simulations using a 3D finite element (FE) model, starting with the validation of surface deformations induced by a single laser impact.

Findings

Similar surface deformations and work‐hardening levels, but relatively lower residual stresses were obtained with the new large 4‐6 mm impact configuration. This was attributed to a reduced number of local cyclic loadings (2) compared with the small impact configuration (4). Additionally, more anisotropic stresses were obtained with small impacts. FE simulations using Johnson‐Cook's material' behavior were shown to simulate accurately surface deformations, but to overestimate maximum stress levels.

Research limitations/implications

This work should provide LSP workers a better understanding of the possible benefits from the different LSP configurations currently co‐existing: using small (<2 mm) impacts at high‐cadency rates or large ones (>4‐5 mm). Moreover, experimental results and simulated data had never been presented on 2050‐T8 Al alloy.

Originality/value

An experimental (and numerical) comparison using two distinct laser sources for LSP, has never been presented before. This preliminary work should help LSP workers to choose adequate sources.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper explores optimal service resource management strategy, a continuous challenge for health information service to enhance service performance, optimise service resource utilisation and deliver interactive health information service.

Design/methodology/approach

An adaptive optimal service resource management strategy was developed considering a value co-creation model in health information service with a focus on collaborative and interactive with users. The deep reinforcement learning algorithm was embedded in the Internet of Things (IoT)-based health information service system (I-HISS) to allocate service resources by controlling service provision and service adaptation based on user engagement behaviour. The simulation experiments were conducted to evaluate the significance of the proposed algorithm under different user reactions to the health information service.

Findings

The results indicate that the proposed service resource management strategy, considering user co-creation in the service delivery, process improved both the service provider’s business revenue and users' individual benefits.

Practical implications

The findings may facilitate the design and implementation of health information services that can achieve a high user service experience with low service operation costs.

Originality/value

This study is amongst the first to propose a service resource management model in I-HISS, considering the value co-creation of the user in the service-dominant logic. The novel artificial intelligence algorithm is developed using the deep reinforcement learning method to learn the adaptive service resource management strategy. The results emphasise user engagement in the health information service process.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to support total productive maintenance implementers by providing a roadmap for autonomous maintenance (AM) preparation phase.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use the axiomatic design (AD) methodology with lean philosophy as a paradigm.

Findings

This is an exploratory research to find the most important factors in AM preparation phase. A decoupled AD design ensures an effective usage of training within industry (TWI) and the introduction of standardized work (SW). TWI provides value in importance it assigns to leaders, with its “train the trainers” approach and in preparing a training program. Besides being an effective training method, TWI job instruction (TWI JI) provides needed information infrastructure to front load operators SW and equipment trainings.

Research limitations/implications

Although AD, TWI and lean artifacts are generally field proven, the research is limited due to the lack of an industrial application.

Practical implications

In many real-life projects, companies do not know where to start and how to proceed, which leads to costly iterations. The proposed roadmap minimizes iterations and increases the chance of project success.

Originality/value

The authors apply AD for the first time to AM preparation phase despite it is used in the analysis of lean manufacturing. AD permits to structure holistically the most relevant lean manufacturing solutions to obtain a risk free roadmap. TWI has emerged as a training infrastructure; TWI JI-based operator SW training and the adaptation of JI structure to equipment training are original additions.

Abstract

Purpose

This study pioneers the investigation into the determinants influencing Malaysian investors' intentions towards Non-Fungible Token (NFT) investments, utilizing an extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) framework. It explores the burgeoning interest in NFTs within the Malaysian market, an emerging economy, and identifies the behavioral adoption determinants critical for NFT investment decisions.

Design/methodology/approach

Adopting a quantitative methodology, the research engaged 183 experienced Malaysian investors through a structured online questionnaire survey. The study employed regression analysis to assess the impact of Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy, Social Influence, Facilitating Conditions, Perceived Usefulness, Social Support and Perceived Trust on NFT investment intentions.

Findings

The findings reveal that Performance Expectancy and Social Support significantly predict the intention to invest in NFTs, accounting for 47% of the variance in investment intentions. The study highlights the crucial role of perceived benefits and community support in shaping Malaysian investors' engagement with NFTs, amidst the complexities of the digital asset landscape.

Research limitations/implications

The study acknowledges the limitation posed by its sampling method and size, suggesting the need for broader investigations that include a more diverse demographic to enhance the generalizability of the findings. Future research could further delve into the specific behaviors, motivations and challenges of NFT investors and creators.

Practical implications

The significant predictive power of Performance Expectancy indicates a primary financial motivation among Malaysian NFT investors, suggesting policymakers consider regulations that foster innovation and growth in the NFT sector while safeguarding investors. The study also underscores the importance of community support, pointing towards the development of platforms that facilitate knowledge sharing among NFT enthusiasts.

Social implications

By demonstrating the pivotal role of social support in the NFT investment decision-making process, the research implies a powerful sense of community among investors in the digital asset space. It suggests the potential of NFTs to foster a more inclusive and accessible market for creative industry entrepreneurs, facilitating direct engagement and profit realization.

Originality/value

This research marks a significant departure from existing studies by tailoring the UTAUT model specifically to the NFT investment context in Malaysia. It unveils the nuanced dynamics influencing NFT investment intentions, emphasizing the unique contributions of Performance Expectancy and Social Support, thus providing a fresh perspective on NFT adoption in emerging markets.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between leadership styles, psychological capital and job engagement.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected among knowledge workers working no less than 1 year in three high-tech enterprises in Henan Province, China. The investigation was conducted with the cooperation from the human resource departments of the selected enterprises from August to October 2014. To minimize potential common method bias, the authors adopted a cross-lagged design with a time gap of four months. The statistical methods included descriptive statistics, structural equation modeling (SEM) and bootstrap analysis.

Findings

The results showed: leadership styles significantly influenced employees’ psychological capital and work engagement; specifically, transformational and transactional leadership positively predicted employees’ psychological capital and work engagement; compared with transactional leadership, transformational leadership had stronger predictive power to employees’ psychological capital and work engagement; employees’ psychological capital positively predicted their work engagement; and employees’ psychological capital acts as partial mediator between leadership styles and employees’ work engagement.

Originality/value

Although a body of studies have shown that leadership is an important factor influencing employees’ work attitude and outcomes, it is only in recent years that the effect mechanism of leadership becomes a hot subject in organizational behavior and management fields. As for leadership styles, in general, most research concerned transformational leadership, rather than transactional leadership and only a little of research compared the effects of transformational leadership and transactional leadership on employees’ work outcomes. In terms of outcomes of leadership, as noted earlier, the previous research mainly explored job performance, job satisfaction, innovation behavior, job burnout and so on. Regarding the effect of leadership styles on employees’ work engagement, in spite of more and more supportive evidence of the link between transformational leadership and work engagement, few studies examined the relationship between transactional leadership and work engagement. What’s more, to the best of our knowledge, till now, no empirical research has explored the internal mechanism of this effect from the perspective of psychological capital. Therefore, the present study is a breakthrough for the direct model of leadership styles and employees’ engagement, theoretically bridges the research gap and contributes to the existing literature by presenting a new picture of leadership behavior effect mechanism.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the dynamic relationship between the Bitcoin market and the conventional asset classes in India

Design/methodology/approach

This paper aims to cast light on the dynamic linkages between Bitcoin prices and other conventional asset classes in India by using the wavelet transform frameworks, which can allow us to analyze components of time series without losing the information. To do that, the techniques used with the data set include wavelet-based covariance, correlation, coherence spectrum, continuous power spectrum and Granger causality test.

Findings

The findings of the study suggest that interrelationships between Bitcoin and the key financial asset returns are statistically significant at low, medium and high frequencies. This study also finds the existence of the unidirectional connectedness between Bitcoin the other assets in India.

Practical implications

The outcome of the analysis calls for substantial policy implications for investors, portfolio management in India. This research on the existence of the interconnectedness between Bitcoin and other conventional asset classes in a specific country context, India can, therefore, make a significant contribution to the contemporary debate about the speculative nature of the cryptocurrencies. It casts light on whether Bitcoin provides any diversification and risk management benefits for Indian, as well as global investors.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first paper investigating the interrelatedness between Bitcoin and key conventional asset classes in India. This research makes methodological advancements by using the wavelet coherence transform. The findings provide empirical bases from which to deal with issues regarding hedging purposes and optimal portfolio allocation for an increasing number of investors in the Indian context. Therefore, the main contribution of this study to related literature in this field is significant.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop a robot for non-destructive testing of the pipelines to improve its reliability and reduce the loss of products due to cracks, corrosions, etc.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, an inline inspection robot was developed for crack and corrosion detection in the pipeline. The developed robot consists of ultrasonic sensors to avoid obstacles, a visual aid with high resolution to view real time images and colour sensors for corrosion detection. The Autodesk inventor software was used for the drafting and solid modelling of the robot. A dummy pipe of 500 mm diameter and 2,000 mm length with induced cracks and corrosion was fabricated to test the robot. The colour sensors placed at each side of the robot were used to detect corrosion in the dummy pipe whilst the image processing was done to analyse the crack, as well as the type and depth of corrosion present in the dummy pipe.

Findings

The results obtained show the ability of the developed robot to detect cracks and determine the crack growth in the pipeline in addition to its ability to determine corrosion.

Practical implications

Hence, the study provides a diagnostic tool for detecting pipeline defects and analysing the extent of defects to determine the fatigue rate and the useful life of the pipeline.

Originality/value

The novelties of this study is based on the fact that it was designed to avoid obstacles and check for cracks, leakage and corrosion in pipelines autonomously. It has visual aid that makes it possible to see the interior of the pipe. This makes it easier to identify the defect and the location of the defects before a catastrophic failure. The device is also equipped with sensors, which can detect defects and send the signal to a control system, as well as a Bluetooth device so the operator can have real time information about the state and integrity of the pipelines. The system is also integrated with a Bluetooth device, which permits its compatibility with Android and other mobile applications. Thus, the enabled user can send a command to query the state of the pipeline at any location with the feedback received in the form of short message service. Hence, this study offers contribution in the development of an independent (self-governing) system with the capability to autonomously detect defects in pipe walls and effectively communicate feedback to the authorised users. The prototype model for the evaluation of pipeline integrity will bring about a more proactive way to detect pipeline defects so that effort can be geared towards its restoration before it becomes a major problem, which will subsequently affect productivity and incur losses.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the value relevance of intangible assets, including goodwill and other types of intangibles in the pre- and post-adoption periods of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Most importantly, this paper investigates whether the value relevance of reported intangible assets is associated with their value reliability. Furthermore, this paper reports whether the adoption of IFRS improves the value relevance of intangible assets and alters the relationship between value relevance and reliability.

Design/methodology/approach

Both price and return models based on Ohlosn theory (1995) are employed to test the value relevance and value reliability of intangibles. Australian-listed firms with capitalised intangibles from 2001 to 2009 are selected in this study. The sample includes 6,650 firm-year observations.

Findings

The main result shows that capitalised intangible assets are value relevant in Australia, in both the pre- and post-adoption of IFRS periods. Value relevance is higher in firms with more reliable information on intangible assets. This study finds that the value relevance of intangibles has declined in the post-adoption period of IFRS. However, the positive relationship between the value relevance and the reliability of intangibles has remained unchanged in the post-adoption period.

Originality/value

The paper contributes a new measurement of value reliability of accounting information about intangibles. This paper is one of few studies on the relationship between value relevance and reliability of intangible assets. The results show that value relevance is positively associated with value reliability. This suggests that, when accounting standard setters assess whether the existing IFRS of intangibles should be improved in the future, they need to think not only in terms of whether the standard can provide more relevant information of intangibles to investors but also whether the standard can make the information of intangibles more reliable.
