Abstract

Purpose

The proposed research primarily focuses on optimizing process parameters to enhance the surface quality of AA7079 material components formed incrementally through the single-point incremental forming process. The study experimentally investigates the influence of selected process inputs on the surface quality of the formed material. Experiments were conducted on AA7079 aluminum alloy sheets under varying conditions of specific process factors, including tool diameter, side-wall angle, rotational speed, feed rate and vertical step size.

Design/methodology/approach

The experimental investigation has been planned by using the concept of design of experiments (DoE) and is based on trial runs using response surface methodology. The observed data has further been analyzed through analysis of variances analysis and desirability method for highlighting the significant parameters and optimization along with their contribution on surface quality measure, i.e. surface roughness.

Findings

The side-wall angle, vertical step size, feed rate, rotational speed and forming tool radius have been found to be the major factors that significantly affect the surface roughness. The best value of the SR has been recommended as 0.735 µm under the parametric setting as; tool size (diameter) of 12.291 mm, wall angle of 68.210°, step size of 0.269 mm, speed as 884.672 rpm and a feed rate of 2,791.240 mm/min.

Originality/value

It has been recommended that greater tool diameter, greater wall angle, smaller steps, higher feed and slower speeds are necessary to improve surface roughness. Out of all the characteristics, tool size is the most important one. In addition, validation trials have been carried out to identify any deviations from the optimal value that was expected.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the postprocessed wire tool surface using scanning electron microscopy and find out the streamlined conditions of input process variables using multi-objective optimization techniques to get minimum wire wear values.

Design/methodology/approach

A federated mode of response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) is used to optimize the process variables during the machining of a nickel-based superalloy.

Findings

The study explores that with the rise in spark-off time and spark gap voltage, the rate of wire tool consumption also escalates.

Originality/value

Most of the researchers used the RSM technique for the optimization of process variables. The RSM generates a second-order regression model during the modeling and optimization of a manufacturing process whose major limitation is to fit the collected data to a second-order polynomial. The leading edge of ANN on the RSM is that it has comprehensive approximation capability, i.e. it can approximate virtually all types of nonlinear functions, including quadratic functions also.

Abstract

Purpose

To address the critical sustainability challenges currently faced by China, manufacturers in this country have committed to improve their environmental performance. To support this commitment, evidence suggests that Chinese manufacturers have mainly turned to the implementation of environmental management approaches such as ISO 14001, cleaner production, green supply chain management, circular economy and green lean. However, the adoption of other approaches such as total quality environmental management (TQEM) by Chinese manufacturers is less clear. The purpose of this paper is to fill this gap by providing light into fundamental issues regarding the implementation of TQEM in the manufacturing sector of China.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey-based exploratory study was conducted based on 119 Chinese manufacturing companies, and the data obtained were analysed using a combination of descriptive and inferential statistics.

Findings

The results revealed that in general, there is less awareness of TQEM in the Chinese manufacturing sector than other environmental and quality/operations improvement approaches such as green supply chain management, reverse logistics, ISO 9000, Six Sigma and lean Six Sigma. Thus, its degree of implementation is also lower than these approaches as well as ISO 14001. The results also indicate that although a company’s size is not associated with the implementation of TQEM, it is mainly large organisations and those that have adopted TQM those which will be mainly aware and have implemented TQEM. The study also reveals the drivers, results and challenges of TQEM implementation.

Originality/value

The paper extends the currently limited knowledge on TQEM, and its results are beneficial for managers who aim at effectively adopting TQEM to simultaneously improve the environmental, operational and financial performance of their organisations. The paper can also motivate organisations not currently embarked on the “green wagon” to contemplate the benefits that implementing TQEM, or any other environmental management approach, may bring to their operations and business.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of the different circular business models (CBMs) in the manufacturing and service sector and apply this in the context of the food industry (FI), through a systematic literature review of related published journals and articles. The research study is designed to illustrate the impact of CBMs in the manufacturing and service sectors through a combination of real-life examples and direct references to existing literature.

Design/methodology/approach

The underlying research study follows a systematic literature review approach where the relevant CBMs are explored in the context of the manufacturing and service sector (FI.) The journals most cited in the context of CBMs and their implication in the manufacturing and service sector were chosen for this study. There was no fixed timeframe applied to complete the research. A total of 54 articles were selected which referenced: discussion in the context of the concept of CBMs; different types of CBM; definition of the manufacturing sector; definition of the service sector (FI); application of different CBMs in these two sectors; and included a comparison of the application of CBMs. In total, 40 of the 54 articles were shortlisted for best relevance and used in the research study.

Findings

The underlying research study was limited to 40 articles and the data contained within them. The article search was limited to the keywords of the CBM; the implication of CBM; the CBM in manufacturing (textiles); circular business in service (FI); and comparison and application of the CBM.

Practical implications

The final analysis demonstrates that circular business promotes sustainability by allowing companies to generate maximum return from given resources and reach zero waste targets. Greater customer satisfaction is also achieved through service innovation that cuts down negative impact on the environment. These findings are relevant and applicable to the FI.

Originality/value

A review of existing literature showed that whilst there is significant research on the implications of the CBM in general, there has been little focus on the use of different CBMs specifically in the manufacturing and service industry (FI). This research study is designed to tease out the specific benefits of CBMs in this context, highlighting the contribution they can make to efficiency in both the manufacturing and service sectors (FI) through useful comparison.

Abstract

Purpose

Using the lens of the natural resource-based view (NRBV) theory, this study investigates the effect of green supply chain management (GSCM) practices such as green manufacturing (GM), eco-design (ED), green purchasing (GP) and investment recovery (IR) on the carbon-neutral supply chain (CNSC) performance of firms through the mediating influence of logistics eco-centricity (LE).

Design/methodology/approach

A conceptual framework that hypothesizes the relationship between GSCM practices, LE and the CNSC performance of firms is developed. Key GSCM practices are then identified using experts’ opinions. Furthermore, we collected responses from logistics companies to validate the conceptual framework using the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) method.

Findings

Through this study, we found that GSCM practices significantly improve a firm's CNSC performance, and the relationships between GSCM practices and CNSC performance are positively mediated by LE.

Practical implications

The implications of the study suggest that logistics managers can benefit from the findings of this study to comprehend the impact of various GSCM techniques on LE and CNSC from the viewpoint of the NRBV paradigm.

Originality/value

This research provides valuable perspectives for managers and supply chain (SC) practitioners in their quest for sustainable and environmentally responsible SC operations through an extensive and novel analysis of the connection between GSCM practices, LE and CNSC performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The academic literature and research lines exploring the effect of quality improvement methods on environmental performance still remain in early stages. The purpose of this paper is therefore to investigate, through a systematic review of the existing academic literature, the environmental (green) impact of using quality and operations improvement methods such as Lean, Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma. This includes the impact on energy saving and the usage of natural resources.

Design/methodology/approach

This study follows a systematic literature review approach through which it analyses research papers published in top 16 operations and quality management journals. No specific time frame was established, but a set of keywords were used to short-list the articles. A sample of 70 articles was finally short-listed and analysed to provide a discussion on environmental concerns related to Lean, Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma.

Findings

The comprehensive review of short-listed articles indicates that both Lean and Six Sigma can be considered effective methods to support the conservation of resources, combat global warming and saving energy. Various scholars provide evidence of this, and as such, organisations should not only consider these methods to manage quality and improve operational performance but also meet environmental regulations. A set of research questions that demands further investigation has also been proposed based on the findings of this research.

Research limitations/implications

This study is limited to a sample of 70 articles collected from top 16 operations and quality management journals. The search of journals is also limited to a set of key words (“Lean”, “Green”, “Six Sigma”, “environment”, “sustainable” and “sustainability”) used to short-list the sample size.

Practical implications

The study shows that organisations can consider the adoption of Lean, Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma to meet environmental regulations, save costs and also meet quality management standards. This will contribute in helping organisations to formulate more effective and inclusive strategies which do not only consider the quality and operational dimensions but also the environmental dimension.

Originality/value

Literature exploring the environmental/green impact of quality management methods commonly used in industry is limited. There is also a lack of studies aiming to investigate the green impact of Lean and Six Sigma in top operations and quality management journals. The study focusing on investigating the green impact of Lean, Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma methods altogether is also a research first of its kind.

Abstract

Purpose

This purpose of this paper was to conduct a study with an aim to reduce the cost of chicken nuggets by replacing part of lean meat with soy flakes. The suitability of chilled paneer whey was also assessed in place of ice water.

Design/methodology/approach

In the development of chicken nuggets, water-soaked soya flakes at the rate of 20 per cent were used in the formulation. The chilled whey at the rate of 8 per cent of the formulation was used to prevent the rise of temperature during emulsion preparation.

Findings

The product prepared in this way gave 5 per cent more yield than normal preparation in which ice water was used. The protein content in the preparation had gone significantly (p < 0.05) higher and moisture significantly (p < 0.05) lower than the normal control. The other proximate composition of chicken nuggets like fat and ash revealed no significant (p > 0.05) change in the product. Initially, thiobarbituric acid value and pH were observed lower in soya flakes-extended nuggets than the control. The overall acceptability was higher, that might be due to good binding and proper emulsion preparations.

Research limitations/implications

Some experiments on amino acid profile and fatty acid profile are also required for further know-how about the actual nutritional status of chicken meat nuggets.

Practical implications

The products will be of immense value for the nutritional supplement and utilization of by-products like whey. It may also be a cost-effective formulation.

Social implications

The products will be acceptable to all commodities because it is made up of chicken meat.

Originality/value

The cost of the formulation was also lower than the chicken nuggets used without soya flakes and whey because cost of meat was greater than the soya. The whey produced in paneer production costs less or by-product rich in protein materials can be better utilized into valuable products. The developed product seems to have great applications in the food industry and acceptability among consumers.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to assess the effect of natural antioxidants (Tulsi, Lemon grass and Aloevera) on sensory and microbiological quality as well as on Thiobarbituric acid (TBA) values of Redplum and Sahiwal-based milk smoothies stored under refrigeration.

Design/methodology/approach

The smoothies were developed by incorporating optimum level of natural antioxidants, fresh red plum and Sahiwal milk. They were aerobically packaged in low-density polyethylene pouches and stored under refrigeration (4 ± 2°C) till its spoilage. These smoothies were assessed for various storage quality parameters like sensory parameters, microbiological quality and TBA values at regular interval of two days.

Findings

Smoothies made without using natural antioxidants were in good condition for four days, and treated smoothies were stored well for six days. The microbial profile showed significant (p < 0.05) increase in SPC and psychrophilic counts on advancement of storage days. However, no coliform and yeast and mould were detected in all variants of smoothies during storage. TBA values were also increased during storage. But microbial counts and TBA both were under the prescribed limit as described by various organizations. Smoothies treated with Tulsi were found best followed by lemongrass- and aloevera-treated products.

Research limitations/implications

Amino acid and fatty acid profiling may be incorporated to known how the exact nutritional value.

Practical implications

Developed milk smoothies using natural antioxidants may serve the purpose of functional food.

Social implications

As per the authors, today, world is seeking for health providing components with longer product shelf life. Therefore, the product may serve the purpose.

Originality/value

The paper has demonstrated that the Sahiwal milk and red plum-based smoothies were of high acceptability. Their shelf life was found best when treated with Tulsi, Lemon grass and Aloevera natural antioxidants. It was better in all spectrums like lower microbial counts, higher sensory attributes and lower TBA counts as compared to untreated products.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the farmers’ awareness level and explores the factors, which may influence their adoption intention regarding solar powered pumps.

Design/methodology/approach

The study consist of a sample of 510 respondents selected from the rural region of Punjab (India) by using convenience sampling. Descriptive analysis, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and multiple regression analysis techniques have been used for the analytical purpose.

Findings

The study reveals that dimensions such as perceived benefit, perceived compatibility and government incentives have a significant impact on intention to use solar powered pumps, whereas high investment cost and lack of awareness regarding government subsidies are the main reason for non-adoption of the same.

Research limitations/implications

The sample size has been selected on the basis of convenience sampling and has been taken from the rural area, which may affect its generalizability.

Practical implications

The present research is expected to be useful for the manufacturers, regulators, customers, commercial banks, product and service providers, and other environmental institutions.

Originality/value

The study has acknowledged various intentional factors, which influence the adoption decision of solar powered pumps. Therefore, the present study will be useful to formulate action plans to improve the environmental quality.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of chicken breeds on quality characteristics of meat nuggets.

Design/methodology/approach

The formulation of meat nuggets prepared from meat of Cobb-400, Vanraja, Aseel and Kadaknath separately consisted of 60 per cent lean meat. The emulsion was prepared by standard method and moulded into nuggets. Cooking was performed under pressure (120°C/15 Psi for 30 min).

Findings

Emulsion and cooked nuggets both showed no significant differences in pH values among the breeds. Higher moisture and fat content was observed in emulsion and nuggets prepared from Cobb-400, while respective protein and ash was maximum in Kadaknath and Vanraja meat-based emulsions and nuggets. The per cent emulsion stability (87.04 ± 0.45) and cooking yield (85.24 ± 0.06) was reported highest in Cobb-400, which indicates the better water holding capacity and suitability of Cobb-400 meat for the development of nuggets at six weeks of age. The mean sensory scores for colour and appearance (7.12 ± 0.28), as well as flavour (7.00 ± 0.04), were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in Cobb-400 nuggets and lowest in Kadaknath (6.21 ± 0.03 and 6.65 ± 0.06). However, no significant differences were noticed in other sensory attributes among treatments.

Research limitations/implications

The fatty acid and amino acid profile analysis may be helpful to understand the original nutritional difference in prepared nuggets.

Practical implications

The study will be off immense help in optimum utilization of meat of locally available chicken breeds for breed-specific and cost-effective product formulations.

Social implications

The products will be acceptable to all commodities because it is made up of chicken meat.

Originality/value

The effect of chicken breeds on meat nuggets is relatively new aspect and essential to establish suitability of meat of locally available chicken breeds for product development.
