Abstract
Describes the aims and work of the Applied Social Science Index and Abstracts (ASSIA) as providing a clear path to information for most research questions in social sciences in a clear and user‐friendly format. Discusses the chain indexing method used and the use of CD‐ROM. Concludes that ASSIA deserves the recognition and praise that reviewers have given it but that librarians have chosen to ignore.

Abstract
Describes the history and work of the Fritz Hoser Institute based in Dortmund for the study of German and foreign working class literature. Notes that its work centres on its library and archive collections and the exploration of working class culture of the German‐speaking countries. Concludes that it is not expected that a special library and archive with no loan facilities will be used by a great number of workers and employees and they see it as their duty to mount travelling exhibitions of some of the material in the collection.
