Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a three‐dimensional thermal model for friction stir welding of AISI 1018 mild steel to predict the thermal cycle, temperature distribution, the effect of welding parameters on power required, heat generation and peak temperature during the friction stir welding process.

Design/methodology/approach

The mathematical expressions for heat generation during the friction stir welding process were derived. The simulations for various welding and rotational speeds were carried out on ANSYS software employing temperature and radius dependent moving heat source and applying the boundary conditions.

Findings

The predicted thermal cycle, torque required and temperatures were found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. The heat generation and peak temperatures were found to be directly proportional to rotational speed and inversely proportional to welding speed. The rate of increase in heat generation and peak temperature were found to be higher at lower rotational speeds and lower at higher rotational speeds. The heat generation during friction stir welding was found to be 71.4 per cent at shoulder, 23.1 per cent at pin side and 5.5 per cent at bottom of the pin.

Originality/value

A new temperature dependent slip factor has been used to determine the contribution of slipping and sticking on total heat generation. A temperature and radius dependent moving heat source has been employed.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to seek and identify key enablers influencing the integration of deconstruction and carbon finance to improve sustainable and resilient construction in the Industry 5.0 era and then examines how these enablers relate to one another and rank, classify and prioritize them appropriately.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopts the Integrated Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory-Interpretive Structural Modeling-Matrice d’impacts Croises Multiplication Appliquee a un Classment (DEMATEL-ISM-MICMAC) methodology.

Findings

The key enablers are the circular economy approach with closed-loop material flow, prioritizing material recovery and reuse, and structuring carbon credits for affordability.

Research limitations/implications

The construction industry can advance toward environmentally friendly, sustainable building techniques and help achieve the larger objectives of carbon neutrality and environmental preservation by adopting the study’s guiding principles.

Practical implications

This study implies switching to circular rather than linear economic methods. It is still unrealistic to achieve zero carbon emissions, which is why carbon finance is important because it allows companies to trade carbon credits and encourages negative carbon activities and to structure and trade carbon credits affordably so that businesses of all sizes can participate. To extend the lives of current materials and reduce waste, it is imperative to maximize their reuse and minimize their disposal.

Originality/value

The novelty of this research lies in introducing carbon trade finance concepts to the construction sector, particularly focusing on the deconstruction phase, to enhance sustainability and resilience in construction practices in the Industry 5.0 era.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to develop a scale that assesses place sustainability from the perspectives of residents, who are the main stakeholders. The resulting place sustainability scale (PSS) is a practical and useful tool for place administrators to measure place sustainability at all scales.

Design/methodology/approach

This research analyses the data collected from 636 residents in the town of Salaya in Central Thailand. To develop the scale, the authors randomise 318 samples to conduct an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and analyse the rest with confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).

Findings

A total of 11 factors of place sustainability were generated with 33 questionnaire items. Those factors were natural environment, social equity, economic growth, built environment, landscape, liveability, conviviality, transport, energy, water and waste management and governance.

Practical implications

The PSS can help place administrators, such as chief executives of sub-districts, mayors of town municipalities or governors of provinces, assess perceived sustainability from the perspectives of their residents. They can use this scale in conjunction with other sustainability indicators that calculate data from real variables and values to develop a comprehensive view of sustainability that includes both real and perceptual dimensions.

Originality/value

Numerous available indices and indicators use real variables and values to measure place sustainability. However, they have limitations: they can be complex and incomprehensible to outsiders or they might not support participative processes and policymaking. This research develops an alternative measure of place sustainability that assesses the perceptions of residents.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to investigate how Chinese leisure travelers value hotel amenities when they book hotel rooms in Hong Kong.

Design/methodology/approach

The research method was based on a conjoint analysis approach. Conjoint models were developed to determine how people make decisions and what they really value in products or services.

Findings

Price had the highest average importance value, followed by airport/local area shuttles, wireless internet, breakfast and quality of coffee/tea. Price, airport/local area shuttles and wireless internet were rated as being relatively more important than breakfast and quality of coffee/tea.

Research limitations/implications

This research has some limitations in terms of the generalizability of its findings to all hotels and travelers. First, only four hotel amenities were considered. Second, the research focused on Chinese leisure travelers staying in hotels in Hong Kong. Finally, the sample only consisted of leisure travelers.

Practical implications

This research shows that providing complimentary breakfast and free access to quality coffee/tea when a hotel already provides a shuttle service and free wireless internet does not add much value to the overall hotel product from the customer’s point of view. Moreover, it provides insights into how hotel professionals can customize and select the amenities they provide to impress their customers.

Originality/value

This research has significant implications for hotel managers’ efforts to formulate and implement strategies or tactics in their daily operations or long-term plans through the selection of hotel amenities.
