Abstract

Purpose

Type-2 fuzzy sets became attractive in practice because of their footprint of uncertainty that gives them more degrees of freedom. This paper aims to use genetic algorithms (GAs) to design an interval Type-2 fuzzy logic system (IT2FLS) for the purpose of predicting bankruptcy.

Design/methodology/approach

The shape of type-2 membership functions, the parameters giving their spread and location in the fuzzy partitions and the set of fuzzy rules are evolved at the same time by encoding all together into the chromosome representation. The enhanced Karnik–Mendel algorithms are used for the centroid type-reduction and defuzzification stage. The performance in predicting bankruptcy is evaluated by benchmarking IT2FLSs against type-1 FLSs. The experimental setup consists of evolving 100 configurations for both the T1FLS and IT2FLS and comparing their in-sample and out-of-sample average accuracy.

Findings

The experiments confirm that representing and capturing uncertainty with more degrees of freedom is an important advantage. It is this extra potential of IT2FLSs that allows them to outperform T1FLS, especially in terms of generalization capability.

Originality/value

The strategy followed in this paper is to train an IT2FLS from scratch rather than tuning the parameters of an existing T1FLS. Because this leads to solving a mixed integer optimization problem, the GA-based approach is specifically designed and uses genetic operators that are most suited for such a case: tournament selection, extended Laplace crossover and power mutation. Finally, the trained IT2FLS is applied to bankruptcy prediction, and its generalization capability is compared with related techniques.

Abstract

Under the circumstances of the accelerated technological advance and the overlapping of various global crises in the recent years, one of the main strategic priorities of the European Union in medium and long terms consists of building resilient regional and local communities which implies the aim to protect citizens against the impact of climate changes. Considering the essential role of the human capital in this endeavor, this chapter aims to investigate the relationship between human resources and economic development focusing a SWOT analysis in the case of Romania taking into account recent developments and trends of the European and global labor market related to various aspects induced by the green transition. The analysis of the structural demo-economic characteristics of Romania’s population revealed a decline of the total population, against the background of negative demographic and net migration, the increase in the average and median age of the total population, the rise in demographic and economic dependency ratios representing serious challenges for the development strategy on short, medium and long terms. To these, increasing quantitative and qualitative shortages in the labor market are added, which complicate the advancement of the green transition in Romania. In the conclusions of this chapter, strategic milestones on policies and measures in the short, medium and long terms at macroeconomic and labor market levels are proposed.

Abstract

Purpose

Firstly, the authors aimed at offering a general perspective on poverty, highlighting important directions of thinking from the theoretical development, including poverty's main causes (like education, health, social protection, economic growth, employment and good governance). Secondly, it was investigated the problem of poverty in Romania after its accession to the European Union (EU), aiming to show (1) Romania's position among the EU member states, nearby (2) the direct and indirect effects of the selected factors particularly in this country.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on data from Eurostat and Global Competitiveness Index (GCI), descriptive and path analyses were performed for the period between 2007 and 2020.

Findings

The main results emphasized (1) the critical position of Romania among the EU member states in 2020 and the progress recorded since 2007, nearby (2) the direct and indirect effects of the selected factors on poverty in this country. The study highlighted the limited chances for the full participation of the poor people of Romania in the progress of the entire society, especially in terms of education and economic growth.

Originality/value

The major contribution of this study is that it assumes to investigate a profound and persistent societal phenomenon in Romania that is not sufficiently analyzed, discussed and understood. Consequently, this study attained its main objective of showing that the main traditional socio-economic causes of poverty are still pertinent in the actual Romanian society.
