Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of anisotropy in terms of a single parameter indicating strengthening or weakening in the tangential direction in composite disc with hyperbolically varying thickness introduced presumably by processing or due to alignment of dispersed reinforcements during flow of the matrix.

Design/methodology/approach

Mathematical model to describe steady-state creep behavior in an anisotropic rotating disc made of Al-SiCp composite containing 30 vol% of SiC particles. The creep behavior of the composite has been described by Sherby's law. The creep parameters in the law have been determined using the regression equations developed on the basis of available experimental results in the literature. Stress and strain rate distributions for isotropic disc (a=1) have been compared with those obtained for anisotropic composites with characteristic parameters a=0.7 and 1.3.

Findings

The study revealed that the change in the stresses by anisotropy in composite disc is relatively small while anisotropy introduces significant change in the strain rates. It is concluded that the radial strain rate always remained compressive for the isotropic composite as well as the anisotropic disc with a greater than unity (a=1.3). However, it becomes tensile in the middle region of the disc when it is less than unity (a=0.7). If a is reduced from 1.3 to 0.7, the variation of tensile strain rate in the tangential direction remains similar, but the magnitude reduces, i.e. the strength in tangential direction is enhanced.

Originality/value

This study puts forward an analytical framework for the analysis of creep stresses and creep rates in an anisotropic rotating disc with hyperbolically varying thickness.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the propagation of Rayleigh waves in thermoelastic medium with mass diffusion.

Design/methodology/approach

The field equations for the linear theory of homogeneous isotropic thermoelastic diffusion medium are taken into consideration by using dual-phase-lag heat transfer (DPLT) and dual-phase-lag diffusion (DPLD) models. Using the potential functions and harmonic wave solution, three coupled dilatational waves and a shear wave is obtained. After developing mathematical formulation, the dispersion equation is obtained, which results to be complex and irrational. This equation is converted into a polynomial form of higher degree.

Findings

From the polynomial equation, Rayleigh wave root is found. The secular equation is resolved into a polynomial form to find the roots and therefore to find the existence and propagation of Rayleigh wave. The existence of Rayleigh wave in the assumed model depends on the values of various parameters involved in the secular equation. These roots are resolved for phase velocity and attenuation of the inhomogeneous propagation of Rayleigh wave. Behavior of particle motion of these waves inside and at the surface of the thermoelastic medium with mass diffusion is studied. Particular cases of the interest are also deduced from the present investigation.

Originality/value

Governing equations corresponding to DPLT and DPLD models of thermoelastic diffusion are formulated to study the wave propagation and their dependence on various material parameters. In this paper effects of thermal and diffusion phase lags on the phase velocity, attenuation and on particle paths are observed and depicted graphically.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to depict the effect of thermal and diffusion phase-lags on plane waves propagating in thermoelastic diffusion medium with different material symmetry. A generalized form of mass diffusion equation is introduced instead of classical Fick's diffusion theory by using two diffusion phase-lags, one phase-lag of diffusing mass flux vector, represents the delayed time required for the diffusion of the mass flux and the other phase-lag of chemical potential, represents the delayed time required for the establishment of the potential gradient. The basic equations for the anisotropic thermoelastic diffusion medium in the context of dual-phase-lag heat transfer (DPLT) and dual-phase-lag diffusion (DPLD) models are presented. The governing equations for transversely isotropic and isotropic case are also reduced. The different characteristics of waves like phase velocity, attenuation coefficient, specific loss and penetration depth are computed numerically. Numerically computed results are depicted graphically for anisotropic, transversely isotropic and isotropic medium. The effect of diffusion and thermal phase-lags are shown on the different characteristic of waves. Some particular cases of result are also deduced from the present investigation.

Design/methodology/approach

The governing equations of thermoelastic diffusion are presented using DPLT model and a new model of DPLD. Effect of phase-lags of thermal and diffusion is presented on different characteristic of waves.

Findings

The effect of diffusion and thermal phase-lags on the different characteristic of waves is appreciable. Also the use of diffusion phase-lags in the equation of mass diffusion gives a more realistic model of thermoelastic diffusion media as it allows a delayed response between the relative mass flux vector and the potential gradient.

Originality/value

Introduction of a new model of DPLD in the equation of mass diffusion.

Abstract

Purpose

The main motive behind framing this paper is to provide a compromised solution for trapezoidal fuzzy number–multi-objective fully quadratic fractional optimisation model (TrFN-MOFQFOM) by avoiding ambiguities and confusion of decision-makers (DMs). Many researchers have used Taylor's series and parametric approach to transform fractional objective function into non-fractional ones, but Taylor's series expansion is valid only up to a neighbourhood. To avoid these extra efforts, this article suggests a methodology in which numerator of objective function is optimised under the condition of optimising denominator.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper suggests an efficient procedure to search for compromised solution of MOFQFOM with fuzzy coefficients using α-level set and FGP approach. Incomplete data in model is dealt with α-level set. Then after defuzzification, non-fractional models are built from fractional model to get optimal solution of every objective. Finally, the linear weighted sum of negative deviational variables is minimised to satisfy all objective functions up to maximum possible extent.

Findings

On applying suggested approach to the example given in end, the authors arrived at compromised solution having μO1(O1(x))=1 and μO2(O2(x))=0.71. The applied procedure requires less computational efforts and provides the preferred compromised solution.

Originality/value

This work has not been done previously by anyone. The idea being developed here of constructing non-fractional model by dealing numerators and denominators separately is completely new. 10; In the end, an algorithm, flowchart and numerical are also given to clarify the applicability of the suggested approach.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper was to analyse the research trends on the Indian Open and Distance Education (ODE) system as reflected in the articles published in the prominent journals of distance education across the world.

Design/methodology/approach

A study was undertaken to review the research articles on ODE in India published in 11 prominent peer-reviewed journals of distance education during the period 2010–2019. Content analysis was done to find out areas of research undertaken in the ODE of India based on a validated classification of research areas; types of research studies conducted; and authorship and publication patterns.

Findings

Out of a total of 2,571 articles published in 11 selected journals, only 191 (7.42%) pertained to ODE in India. The majority of these 191 articles (68.42%) were published in Indian journals. The Indian and Asian journals together accounted for 93.55% of total articles. Globally, the share of articles on the Indian ODE system was significantly low ranging between 4.27 and a maximum of 10.77%, which was much below expectations from a country having the maximum number of ODE learners in the world. Results further revealed that 63% of the contributors to research on ODE in India were affiliated to Indira Gandhi National Open University.

Research limitations/implications

The limitation of this study was only analysing the research articles published in journals of distance education and other types of articles, namely, book reviews, editorials, field notes and workshop reports were excluded from the analysis.

Practical implications

The study is intended to help researchers, policymakers, and open and distance education institutions to draw a roadmap for the promotion and conduct of system-based research, which would be vital for strengthening the system.

Social implications

The quantum of research is not proportionate to the number of faculty members working in the ODE system of India and the large number of learners that it serves, which is a matter of concern. For any system to grow its periodic systemic review is essential. The research outcomes need to be ploughed back into the system for its betterment.

Originality/value

The study is original. There is no such study undertaken till date. This study will be extremely useful to researchers, as the gaps in distance education research which are yet to be addressed, have been identified by the authors.

Abstract

Purpose

The pandemic crisis has resulted in global chaos that had caused massive disruption to the supply chain. The pharmaceutical industry, in particular, has been working tirelessly to ensure that they can cater to the people who need them. With restrictions being imposed to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the movement of raw materials required has been affected, thus creating the need for the procurement function to be innovative. This study proposes the application of Industry 4.0 concepts into the procurement activities of an organization to make it more resilient and efficient.

Design/methodology/approach

To study the intensity of the challenges, Total Interpretive Structural Modelling is used alongside the “Matrice des Impacts Croises Multiplication Appliquee a un Classement” (MICMAC) technique.

Findings

Resilience can be achieved through the collaboration between the organization and its network of suppliers. This is however easier said than done. High and unclear investments have been identified as the challenge that is taking a toll on all technological investments in the pandemic era. The study also shows that organizational inertia which is present in established and structured firms are a deterrent as well.

Originality/value

This study is based on the application of procurement 4.0 to ensure that pharmaceutical supply chains stay least affected since they are essentials. This study using a multi-criteria decision-making approach to prioritize the challenges. This will help practitioners make decisions faster.

Abstract

Purpose

Real‐time multiplication of two analog signals is one of the most important operations in analogue signal processing. Driven by low‐power and low‐voltage requirements for integrated mixedsignal portable applications, the paper's aim is to propose a novel four‐quadrant low‐voltage analog multiplier using dynamic threshold MOS transistors (DTMOS).

Design/methodology/approach

The SPICE simulations were performed with 0.25 μm technology parameters and results verify the performance of the circuit. The multiplier is simulated at low‐supply voltage of ±0.5 V.

Findings

The proposed multiplier has high linearity and simple structure hence it is suitable for high‐performance and low‐power analog VLSI applications.

Originality/value

A new low‐voltage four quadrant analog multiplier using DTMOS circuit topology is presented in the paper.

Abstract

Purpose

Contemporary construction techniques provide benefits of speed and cost savings on a large scale, and is viable in urban regions with exorbitant housing demand. In rural areas, where scale and access to technology are unavailable, locally prevalent vernacular architecture and methods are more suitable. Although vernacular construction techniques have historically proven more sustainable and climate-sensitive, the lack of skilled labour and lack of versatility in material selection limits its application on large-scale projects. This study explores the choice of building design and technology, from the context of embodied energy, carbon and other life cycle impacts for housing construction.

Design/methodology/approach

Life cycle assessment (LCA) that evaluates impacts due to the products/processes is used to analyse different construction techniques. Further a detailed estimation of embodied carbon and embodied energy is done for both “vernacular” and “contemporary” choices of construction methodology for a case study project.

Findings

The building constructed using vernacular techniques has lower embodied carbon and energy by over 30% compared to the other clusters designed using contemporary confined masonry techniques. However, with a few external interventions the contemporary methods can be implemented with improved sustainability.

Research limitations/implications

The limitation of the study is that it presents a case study-based exploration into comparing construction techniques to provide a practical understanding of making sustainable design choices and, hence, is limited to two construction methods. However, the same method could be extended to compare other construction techniques. Furthermore, it does not present a whole building LCA since the operating phase impacts are assumed to be fairly constant for such housing type, irrespective of the chosen method. Similarly, the demolition phase or the potential of reuse of the waste generated, water consumption and cultural and social heritage are not investigated in comparing the alternatives. Nevertheless, future studies could perform extensive exploratory and modelling studies on the operation phase and demolition phase to understand these impacts further.

Practical implications

In mass housing projects that belong to the so-called “affordable housing” or low-income housing category, sustainability concerns are not yet at the forefront of the decision-making process. Therefore, this study emphasizes the importance of incorporating sustainability into building design and construction and making sustainability accessible to even low-income communities. Adequate planning, social awareness initiatives and imparting skills and knowledge of sustainability to these communities are of utmost importance. The choice of design and materials should be encouraged by keeping in mind lower upfront costs as well as low maintenance and operational costs.

Social implications

The primary implications of the study are that the vernacular technologies are much superior in terms of sustainability in comparison to conventional construction of RCC framed structures as well as contemporary construction methods such as confined masonry. However, the implementation of such techniques presents significant challenges such as a lack of skilled forces, increased maintenance and lack of flexibility to minor modifications. Hence, although being a sustainable choice its acceptance and execution present practical difficulties. Therefore, this study primarily aims to reinforce the belief in vernacular architecture and techniques to build sustainable and resilient communities while highlighting the challenges of the modern world in implementing them.

Originality/value

Most studies advocate using construction methods based on their ease of implementation, maintenance or cost. However, this study highlights the importance of considering the aspect of sustainability in the context of the choice of methods for housing construction in urban and semi-urban areas. This study also addresses the need not to overlook vernacular construction technologies while selecting technology for housing for low-income communities.
