Abstract

The influence of 4‐amino‐5‐mercapto‐3 n‐propyl‐1‐2‐4‐triazole (AMPT) on corrosion and hydrogen permeation through mild steel in 0.5M H2SO4 and 1M HCl has been studied using weight loss measurements and various electrochemical techniques. AMPT is found to be more inhibitive in H2SO4 than in HCl. Potentiodynamic polarisation studies clearly prove the fact that this compound behaves as a mixed inhibitor; but predominantly as a cathodic inhibitor. Hydrogen permeation studies and AC impedance measurements also indicate an improved performance of the compound in H2SO4. The adsorption of this compound on the mild steel surface obeys Temkin’s adsorption isotherm.

Abstract

Phosphonic acids are good complexing agents. However, they are not good as inhibitors except for a very few. Synergistic inhibition is offered in the presence of metal cations like Ca2+, Mg2+, Zn2+ and others in neutral media. The zinc ion is an ideal choice. The part of zinc ions are now replaced by polymers, azoles to prepare eco‐friendly inhibitor formulations. They are also used as corrosion inhibitors in concrete, coatings, rubber blends, acid cleaners, anti‐freeze coolants, etc. Discusses the various applications of phosphonic acids and their action mechanisms.

Abstract

The problem of zinc corrosion in an alkali solution is a topic of basic and technological interest, as zinc is used as an anode in a variety of alkaline batteries. Corrosion is the basic cause of self‐discharge and short shelf‐life of zinc batteries. The need for studies on the kinetics of corrosion arises as one of the corrosion products, viz, gaseous hydrogen, creates problems in sealed batteries. Sulphides and thiourea of various concentrations were added to alkali solutions and the mechanism of their inhibition is discussed.

Abstract

The electrodissolution of binary alloy films formed on inert substrates is a subject of recent origin. The Cu‐Au and Cu ‐30 per cent alloys, when dissolved anodically, showed a selective dissolution of the less noble metal occurring earlier than the simultaneous dissolution of both the components of the binary alloy films. However, the mode of dissolution, either galvanostatic or potentiostatic, varied the mechanism of dissolution. In the galvanostatic mode of dissolution, the dissolution changed from a preferential to a simultaneous one, while in the potentiodynamic type, simultaneous dissolution occurred. In the case of an ideal solid solution of Cu‐Ni alloy, under linear sweep conditions, an intermediate phase and an intermetallic compound dissolved simultaneously. Only for the eutectic types of alloy like Cu‐Pb and Cd‐Zn the dissolution was selective. On the other hand, Swathirajan considered that the dissolution was always preferential for the less noble metal.

Abstract

Introduction The mechanism of the inhibition of the corrosion of iron in HCl by acetylenic alcohols, is investigated by weight change method, galvanostatic method and faradic impedance method. Propargyl alcohol offers greater protection than 3‐butyn‐2ol, 2‐methyl‐3‐butyn‐2‐ol and 2‐butyn 1,4 diol in hydrochloric acid solution of concentrations (1.0 to 8.0M). The corrosion of pure iron in hydrochloric acid solutions involves the participation of adsorbed FeOH intermediate and forms chlorhydroxy iron complex. The addition of ferrous ion is found to favour the three‐dimensional chelation with inhibitor molecule, leading to polymen film formation. With prolonged exposure the thickness of the polymer film increases.

Abstract

Cyclic voltametric studies were carried out on mixtures of nickel sulphate, ferrous ammonium sulphate containing ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid, triammonium citrate, boric acid, Sodium chloride in the pH range of 8.5‐10.5 on platinum. The deposition of iron was found to involve the formation of FeOH+ and the second electron transfer is slow. The formation of iron nickel alloy film is anomalous. The charge transfer rates of FeOH+ and NiOH+ determine the deposition. Stripping voltametric curves revealed the dissolution of iron from an intermediate phase rich of iron in the iron‐nickel films.

Abstract

The understanding of the dissolution and corrosion behaviour of tin and lead in fluoboric acid solutions, is of technological interest as their fluoborate solutions are prepared by the dissolution of the individual metals in acid solutions. The cyclic polarization studies revealed the dissolution of these metals involve the chemical step involving BF4 ion preceding the second electron transfer as the slow step.

Abstract

The chapter explains the Blockchain and its application in cryptocurrency and in various sectors. It gives an insight into the level of adoption of Blockchain technology globally based upon industry, country, and component. China is leading all nations worldwide, followed by the United States. The study will help to understand future research regarding its applications in different sectors of the economy. The study will also help to understand the significance and complications regarding risk and regulation. Its adoption in the logistics and supply chain is meant to achieve error-free communication and efficient tracking management.

Abstract

Purpose

Corrosion sensors and networks are the most effective techniques to obtain the corrosion information and recognize the corrosion status of reinforced concrete structures. However, reference electrode is the key element to provide the baseline for potential control of the corrosion monitoring sensors during corrosion measurement process. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to provide the novel solid‐state reference electrode for the corrosion sensors.

Design/methodology/approach

A solid‐state Ag/AgCl reference electrode has been prepared. Furthermore, the performance of the reference electrode, such as stability, temperature response, anti‐polarization and influence of the concrete admixture, has been investigated.

Findings

The results indicate that the balance potential and the temperature coefficient of the reference electrode are 3.64±1mv (vs. SCE) at 25°C and −0.51 mv/°C±0.03 mv/°C, respectively. Furthermore, the polarization curve exhibits characteristics of three stages as the polarization current is in (−10μA/cm2,+10μA/cm2). Additionally, the reference electrode is insensitive to the concrete admixtures which include Na2SO4, NaCl, NaNO3 and NaNO2.

Originality/value

The research provides the key element for the corrosion monitoring sensors to integrate structural health monitoring system in future.

Abstract

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy has become a very important tool in the analysis of an equivalent circuit of an electrochemical cell. Recently a new model was proposed by Taylor and Gileadi for the better understanding of the Warburg process. The model describes an equivalent circuit consisting of capacitance in series with resistance to replace the conventional Warburg impedance in the Randels equivalent circuit. Discusses the above model highlighting the defects in their assumption. Attempts to find a better understanding of the Warburg impedance and discusses various possibilities.
