This paper aims to compute the magnetic stray field created by faulty electrical machines.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to compute the magnetic stray field created by faulty electrical machines.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposes two approaches to compute the magnetic stray field created by faulty electrical machines. The first one presents a homogenized FEM method. The second one is based on a combination of an analytical expression for the magnetic field in the machine air gap with an integral method.

Findings

The studies show good agreement and demonstrate the reliability of the approach.

Originality/value

Two models developed in this paper originally used to compute the stray magnetic field of electrical machines. They can contribute to develop new tools for fault monitoring.

The purpose of this paper is to develop and systemize the 3D finite element (FE) description of electromagnetic field in electrical machines.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop and systemize the 3D finite element (FE) description of electromagnetic field in electrical machines.

Design/methodology/approach

3D FE models of electrical machines are considered. The model consists of FE equations for the magnetic field, equations describing eddy currents and equations, which describe the currents in the machine windings. The FE equations are further coupled by the electromagnetic torque to the differential equation of motion. In the presented field‐circuit model, the flux linkages with the windings are expressed by two components. Attention is paid to the description of machine winding. Both scalar and vector potential formulations are analysed. The FE equations are derived by using the notation of circuit theory. The methods of movement simulation and torque calculation in FE models are discussed.

Findings

Proposed circuit description of electromagnetic field in electrical machines conforms to the applied method of electric and magnetic circuit analysis. The advantage of the presented description is that the equations of field model can be easy associated with the other equations of the electric drive system.

Originality/value

The applied analogies between the FE formulation and the equivalent magnetic and electric network models help formulate efficient field models of electrical machines. The developed models after coupling to the models of supply and control system can be successfully used in the analysis and design electric drives.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide a comprehensive review of electric tugboat deployment in maritime transportation, including an in-depth assessment of its advantages and disadvantages. Along with the identification of advantages and disadvantages of electric tugboat deployment, the present research also aims to provide managerial insights into the economic viability of different tugboat alternatives that can guide future investments in the following years.

Design/methodology/approach

A detailed literature review was conducted, aiming to gain broad insights into tugboat operations and focusing on different aspects, including tugboat accidents and safety issues, scheduling and berthing of tugboats, life cycle assessment of diesel tugboats and their alternatives, operations of electric and hybrid tugboats, environmental impacts and others. Moreover, a set of interviews was conducted with the leading experts in the electric tugboat industry, including DAMEN Shipyards and the Port of Auckland. Econometric analyses were performed as well to evaluate the financial viability and economic performance of electric tugboats and their alternatives (i.e. conventional tugboats and hybrid tugboats).

Findings

The advantages of electric tugboats encompass decreased emissions, reduced operating expenses, improved energy efficiency, lower noise levels and potential for digital transformation through automation and data analytics. However, high initial costs, infrastructure limitations, training requirements and restricted range need to be addressed. The electric tugboat alternative seems to be the best option for scenarios with low interest rate values as increasing interest values negatively impact the salvage value of electric tugboats. It is expected that for long-term planning, the electric and hybrid tugboat alternatives will become preferential since they have lower annual costs than conventional diesel tugboats.

Practical implications

The outcomes of this research provide managerial insights into the practical deployment of electric tugboats and point to future research needs, including battery improvements, cost reduction, infrastructure development, legislative and regulatory changes and alternative energy sources. The advancement of battery technology has the potential to significantly impact the cost dynamics associated with electric tugboats. It is essential to do further research to monitor the advancements in battery technology and analyze their corresponding financial ramifications. It is essential to closely monitor the industry’s shift toward electric tugboats as their prices become more affordable.

Originality/value

The maritime industry is rapidly transforming and facing pressing challenges related to sustainability and digitization. Electric tugboats represent a promising and innovative solution that could address some of these challenges through zero-emission operations, enhanced energy efficiency and integration of digital technologies. Considering the potential of electric tugboats, the present study provides a comprehensive review of the advantages and disadvantages of electric tugboats in maritime transportation, extensive evaluation of the relevant literature, interviews with industry experts and supporting econometric analyses. The outcomes of this research will benefit governmental agencies, policymakers and other relevant maritime transportation stakeholders.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to develop 3D finite element methods for the electromagnetic field calculation in electrical machines and to present the discrete methods of winding description.

Design/methodology/approach

The 3D finite element models of electrical machine windings are considered. Attention is paid to the windings with stranded conductors. The finite element equations are considered as the equations of magnetic networks. The formulation of matrix that transforms winding currents into the field sources is discussed. This matrix is also used in the calculations of flux linkages. In the proposed method, the winding loops are replaced by a set of plane loops. The field sources are defined by the numbers of these loops around the element edges and loops associated with element facets.

Findings

The presented description is the 3D finite element representation of MMF description used in the classical models of electrical machines. The advantage of the proposed approach is that the source description can be successfully applied in the FE method using single scalar potential. In addition, the presented approach guarantees a good convergence of ICCG procedure of solving edge element equations for ungauged formulation using magnetic vector potential.

Originality/value

The applied analogies between the finite element formulation and the equivalent magnetic network models help to formulate an efficient method of field source description. The developed method allows one to apply single magnetic scalar potential in the 3D finite element analysis of electrical machines.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to use a bottom-up, inductive approach to derive destination image attributes from large quantities of online consumer narratives and establish a destination classification system based on relationships among attributes and places.

Design/methodology/approach

Content and social network analyses were used to explore the consumer image structure for destinations based on online narratives. Cluster analysis was then used to group destinations by attributes, and ANOVA provided comparisons.

Findings

Twenty-two attributes were identified and combined into three groups (core, expected, latent). Destinations were classified into three clusters (comprehensive urban, scenic and lifestyle) based on their network centralities. Using data on Chinese tourism, the most mentioned (core) attributes were determined to be landscape, traffic within the destination, food and beverages and resource-based attractions. Social life was meaningful in consumer narratives but often overlooked by researchers.

Practical implications

Destinations should determine into which category they belong and then appeal to the real needs of tourists. Destination management organizations should provide the essential attributes while paying greater attention to highlighting the destinations’ social life atmosphere.

Originality/value

This research produced empirical work on Chinese tourism by combining a bottom-up, inductive research design with big data. It divided the 49 destinations into three categories and established a new system based on rich data to classify travel destinations.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate Nigerian contractors’ perceptions regarding the effects of positive and negative cash flow during construction projects, with a view to establishing effective strategies for cash flow management.

Design/methodology/approach

A desktop-based literature review is used to develop a cross-sectional questionnaire survey which uses Likert items to elicit responses from construction professionals on: the reasons for cash flow problems; the impacts of negative and positive cash flow; and the potential solutions for improving cash flow on construction projects.

Findings

The study finds that delay in payments, difficulty in obtaining financial aid and inadequate budgetary control are the causes of cash flow problems during construction projects. Cumulatively, these issues result in project delays, reduced profit margins and in the worst scenarios, abandoned projects.

Originality/value

There has been limited research into the effects of positive and negative cash flows on construction projects in Nigeria and indeed, the wider geographical location of West Africa. This study addresses this observed dearth and consequently advances methods and solutions to deal with the problem of poor cash flow management in the Nigerian construction industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate three low-evaluation-budget optimization techniques: output space mapping (OSM), manifold mapping (MM) and Kriging-OSM. Kriging-OSM is an original approach having high-order mapping.

Design/methodology/approach

The electromagnetic device to be optimally sized is a five-phase linear induction motor, represented through two levels of modeling: coarse (Kriging model) and fine. The optimization comparison of the three techniques on the five-phase linear induction motor is discussed.

Findings

The optimization results show that the OSM takes more time and iteration to converge the optimal solution compared to MM and Kriging-OSM. This is mainly because of the poor quality of the initial Kriging model. In the case of a high-quality coarse model, the OSM technique would show its domination over the other two techniques. In the case of poor quality of coarse model, MM and Kriging-OSM techniques are more efficient to converge to the accurate optimum.

Originality/value

Kriging-OSM is an original approach having high-order mapping. An advantage of this new technique consists in its capability of providing a sufficiently accurate model for each objective and constraint function and makes the coarse model converge toward the fine model more effectively.

Abstract

Purpose

To predict the price of battery-grade lithium carbonate accurately and provide proper guidance to investors, a method called MFTBGAM is proposed in this study. This method integrates textual and numerical information using TCN-BiGRU–Attention.

Design/methodology/approach

The Word2Vec model is initially employed to process the gathered textual data concerning battery-grade lithium carbonate. Subsequently, a dual-channel text-numerical extraction model, integrating TCN and BiGRU, is constructed to extract textual and numerical features separately. Following this, the attention mechanism is applied to extract fusion features from the textual and numerical data. Finally, the market price prediction results for battery-grade lithium carbonate are calculated and outputted using the fully connected layer.

Findings

Experiments in this study are carried out using datasets consisting of news and investor commentary. The findings reveal that the MFTBGAM model exhibits superior performance compared to alternative models, showing its efficacy in precisely forecasting the future market price of battery-grade lithium carbonate.

Research limitations/implications

The dataset analyzed in this study spans from 2020 to 2023, and thus, the forecast results are specifically relevant to this timeframe. Altering the sample data would necessitate repetition of the experimental process, resulting in different outcomes. Furthermore, recognizing that raw data might include noise and irrelevant information, future endeavors will explore efficient data preprocessing techniques to mitigate such issues, thereby enhancing the model’s predictive capabilities in long-term forecasting tasks.

Social implications

The price prediction model serves as a valuable tool for investors in the battery-grade lithium carbonate industry, facilitating informed investment decisions. By using the results of price prediction, investors can discern opportune moments for investment. Moreover, this study utilizes two distinct types of text information – news and investor comments – as independent sources of textual data input. This approach provides investors with a more precise and comprehensive understanding of market dynamics.

Originality/value

We propose a novel price prediction method based on TCN-BiGRU Attention for “text-numerical” information fusion. We separately use two types of textual information, news and investor comments, for prediction to enhance the model's effectiveness and generalization ability. Additionally, we utilize news datasets including both titles and content to improve the accuracy of battery-grade lithium carbonate market price predictions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study and analyze the effects of fly ash (FA) as a mineral admixture on compressive strength (CS), carbonation resistance and corrosion resistance of reinforced concrete (RC). In addition, the utilization of inexpensive and abundantly available FA as a cement replacement in concrete has several benefits including reduced OPC usage and elimination of the FA disposal problem.

Design/methodology/approach

Reinforcement corrosion and carbonation significantly affect the strength and durability of the RC structures. Also, the utilization of FA as green corrosion inhibitors, which are nontoxic and environmentally friendly alternatives. This review discusses the effects of FA on the mechanical characteristics of concrete. Also, this review analyzes the impact of FA as a partial replacement of cement in concrete and its effect on the depth of carbonation in concrete elements and the corrosion rate of embedded steel as well as the chemical composition and microstructure (X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy) of FA concrete were also reviewed.

Findings

This review provides a clear analysis of the available study, providing a thorough overview of the current state of knowledge on this topic. Regarding concrete CS, the findings indicate that the incorporation of FA often leads to a loss in early-age strength. However, as the curing period increased, the strength of fly ash concrete (FAC) increased with or even surpassed that of conventional concrete. Analysis of the accelerated carbonation test revealed that incorporating FA into the concrete mix led to a shallower carbonation depth and slower diffusion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the concrete. Furthermore, the half-cell potential test shows that the inclusion of FA increases the durability of RC by slowing the rate of steel-reinforcement corrosion.

Originality/value

This systematic review analyzes a wide range of existing studies on the topic, providing a comprehensive overview of the research conducted so far. This review intends to critically assess the enhancements in mechanical and durability attributes (such as CS, carbonation and corrosion resistance) of FAC and FA-RC. This systematic review has practical implications for the construction and engineering industries. This can support engineers and designers in making informed decisions regarding the use of FA in concrete mixtures, considering both its benefits and potential drawbacks.

Abstract

England has a great variety of historic buildings and monuments, often set in fine surroundings. They are our architectural heritage: a growing heritage. Of 5,500 or more buildings of special merit, at least 1,500 are open to the public. They are owned by the nation, by local authorities or non‐profit making trusts, and mostly by private individuals or families. They are spread throughout England, offering many interesting things besides the architecture itself.
