Abstract

We show that a realistic device performing the activity of Maxwell’s demon has to contain at least two units: an informer which gains information of speeds of molecules and an operator which passes the marked molecules through a microscopic door in the wall dividing a gas cylinder. Such a device represents in fact a cognitive robot, which is studied in robotics. We describe the functional interaction between both units with respect to the goal of Maxwell’s to create a temperature difference in a gas cylinder and point out that in living objects there are many Maxwell‐like devices, e.g. enzymes, which are organized in a fashion similar to the classical Maxwell device.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to find the similarity solutions for the one-dimensional motion of spherical symmetric shock wave in non-ideal gas influenced by the azimuthal magnetic field and monochromatic radiation in the presence or absence of gravitational field. This paper also aims to study the effects of physical parameters on the strength of shock wave, and on the flow variables in the flow-field region behind the shock front.

Design/methodology/approach

The Roche model is used to describe the gravitational field effects due to a massive nucleus at the point of symmetry. To derive the similarity solutions, the Lie group symmetry method has been used. Also, the numerical solutions to the present problem are obtained by using Rung–Kutta method of the fourth order with the use of Mathematica software. The effects of variation in the parameter of non-idealness of the gas, the gravitation parameter, the strength of the ambient magnetic field and the adiabatic index of the gas on the shock wave, and on the flow variables is discussed. A comparative study between with and without gravitational field is also, made.

Findings

For different choices of the arbitrary constants that appeared in the solution of infinitesimal generators, we have obtained seven distinct cases of similarity solutions. In the absence of the gravitational field, the similarity solution exists to the power and exponential law shock paths, but in the presence of gravitational field, the similarity solution exists to the power law shock path case only. In the absence of gravitational field, the shock strength is enhanced in the exponential law shock path case in comparison to the power law shock path case. It is found that the shock wave decays with an increase in the value of the adiabatic exponent, the strength of magnetic field, non-idealness of the gas or gravitational parameter.

Research limitations/implications

The consideration of medium under the influence of gravitational field due to a heavy nucleus at the center and presence of magnetic field decrease the shock strength. This result may be helpful in designing space vehicle and jet engine.

Practical implications

The result of the present study may be used in the analysis of data from the measurements by space craft in the solar wind and in neighborhood of the Earth’s magnetosphere.

Social implications

The obtained results may be used for mankind.

Originality/value

The study of spherical shock wave propagation influenced by monochromatic radiation and azimuthal magnetic field in a non-ideal gas with or without gravitational field has yet to be discussed by any authors by using the Lie group symmetry method. In this article, we have discussed all possible cases of similarity solutions using the Lie group symmetry method, which is not studied by anyone as known to us.

Abstract

An analysis is proposed of the consequences of the limitations inherent in observation processes PA and PB on the joint, marginal and conditional entropies of two continuous sets A and B of events, observed by means of PA and PB. These events can be statistically dependent. Properties of asymmetry appear which do not exist in the Shannonian model. They induce a new definition of mutual information.

Abstract

Purpovse

This literature review paper focuses on funding sustainable entrepreneurship. This paper aims to analyse the main trends in the intersection of these two fields, the current focus of the literature and synthesises the main findings.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis consists of bibliometric literature research and relevant peer-reviewed literature content analysis based on a corpus of 74 papers. The analysis aims to understand how sustainable entrepreneurs can fund their ventures and the main funding sources that could be used. The study also presents the challenges and the strategies to fund sustainable ventures.

Findings

The findings show that the literature in the field is still nascent, even though scholars have shown a growing interest in it in the past five years. The focus of the literature is quite diverse between macro- and micro-level analysis and there are some rising topics such as alternative finance like crowdfunding.

Originality/value

Based on the content analysis, the paper synthesises the main trends of the literature and identifies some potential research gaps, such as post-funding empirical research and the efficiency of regulations supporting the emergence of sustainable entrepreneurship.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to explore the dimensions of Quality 4.0 adoption, prioritization of these dimensions and the influential dimensions and their causal relationships that can guide the smooth adoption of Quality 4.0 to boost organizational performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The Quality 4.0 dimensions are explored from the extant literature. The qualitative data were captured from 12 highly experienced experts from diverse industries and academia through structured interview questions and group discussions in multiple phases. The inputs obtained from the experts were analyzed using Fuzzy-Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution for dimension priority, and Fuzzy-Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory was employed to reveal the influential relationship between them.

Findings

The analysis reveals that quality scalability, quality culture and quality conformance are investigated as primary drivers of Quality 4.0 adoption. Data-driven analytical thinking and customer centricity emerge as dynamic dimensions that act as quality deliverable ends. Integrating these methodologies provides a robust framework for understanding and managing Quality 4.0 complexities, offering actionable insights for prioritizing initiatives and addressing interdependencies to ensure successful adoption and implementation.

Practical implications

The practical implications guide industries in creating strategic action plans tailored to their needs and fostering a quality-focused culture. The study also offers valuable insights into government policies, promoting sustainability, efficiency and a circular economy.

Originality/value

The study’s novelty lies in its prioritization and examination of the most influential causes and effects within the Quality 4.0 dimensions. This approach highlights core drivers and critical factors, providing a comprehensive framework for successful implementation.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to design and control of a novel compact transportation system called the “wearable vehicle”. The wearable vehicle allows for traversing all types of terrains while transporting one's luggage in a comfortable and efficient manner.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed design consists of a lower limb exoskeleton carrying two motorized wheels and two free wheels installed alongside its feet. This paper presents a detailed description of the system with its preliminary design and finite element analysis. Moreover, the system has been optimally designed to decrease wearable vehicle’s total weight, consequently leading to a reduction in motor size. Finally, two controllers have been designed to achieve stable operation of the wearable vehicle while walking. A PD controller with gravity compensation has been designed to ensure that the wearable vehicle tracks human motion, while a PID controller has been designed to ensure that the zero moment point is close to the center of the system’s support polygon.

Findings

Experimental tests were carried out to check the wearable vehicle concept. The obtained results prove the feasibility of the proposed wearable vehicle from the design, dynamics and control viewpoints.

Practical implications

This proposed wearable vehicle’s purpose is for traveling faster with less effort than normal walking. When a human comes across a flat open ground, the wearable vehicle can be used as a vehicle. However, when a human enters crowded traffic, an unstructured area or other obstacles like stairs, the vehicle can be switched into walking mode.

Originality/value

The wearable vehicle has seven DOFs exoskeletons, two motorized wheels, two free wheels and a foldable seat. It is used as a vehicle via its motorized and free wheels to travel fast with minimal effort. In addition, the human can switch easily into walking mode, if there is unstructured terrain to be traversed. Furthermore, an illustration of system's mechanisms and main feature parameters are presented to become acquainted with the ultimate benefits of the new system.

Abstract

Purpose

Industry 4.0 defines the application of digital technologies on business infrastructure and processes. With the increasing need to take into account the social and environmental impact of technologies, the concept of Society 5.0 has been proposed to restore the centrality of humans in the proper utilization of technology for the exploitation of innovation opportunities. Despite the identification of humans, resilience and sustainability as the key dimensions of Society 5.0, the definition of the key factors that can enable Innovation in the light of 5.0 principles has not been yet assessed.

Design/methodology/approach

An SLR, followed by a content analysis of results and a clustering of the main topics, is performed to (1) identify the key domains and dimensions of the Industry 5.0 paradigm; (2) understand their impact on Innovation 5.0; (3) discuss and reflect on the resulting implications for research, managerial practices and the policy-making process.

Findings

The findings allow the elaboration of a multileveled framework to redefine Innovation through the 5.0 paradigm by advancing the need to integrate ICT and technology (Industry 5.0) with the human-centric, social and knowledge-based dimensions (Society 5.0).

Originality/value

The study detects guidelines for managers, entrepreneurs and policy-makers in the adoption of effective strategies to promote human resources and knowledge management for the attainment of multiple innovation outcomes (from technological to data-driven and societal innovation).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to contribute learning, knowledge creation and knowledge transfer obtained through a web-based role-play simulation environment as an intelligent approach towards organisational change. Such change occurs in the organisation during its transition to a new version of the ISO 9001:2015.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is based on a literature review and the experience of the authors and a team of international teaching and research staff, as well as on information obtained from satisfaction surveys.

Findings

The actual version of the web-based Management System Role-Play Simulation (MS-RPS©) considers the changes in structure and terminology of the ISO management system standards, enables the creation of a predictive strategy regarding organisational culture, minimises the negative impact of the change and helps people adapt more quickly to it.

Research limitations/implications

The study is limited to the complexity of an actual system and the possible verification of empirical results. Another limitation is the measurability of any real enhancement achieved in the quality, safety and sustainability of production, as well as the business continuity and social responsibility of an organisation.

Practical implications

One benefit of the training is the thorough knowledge that players within organisational management can gain in a short period. Reduced resistance to change is also stressed and the complexity and dynamism of the internal environment considered.

Originality/value

MS-RPS© is based on original web-based software. The primary model has been developed at the Technical University of Košice. It was tested by students, but also by managers and other employees in several industrial organisations, as well as services, over 20 years.
