Abstract

Generic products are purchased by price‐conscious, careful shoppers, who are not, however, willing to accept a lower quality and limited selection of non‐brand names in supermarkets. The behavioural differences between generic product users vs. non‐users are compared in the New England region, using hand‐distributed questionnaires to a convenient sample of 150 respondents.

Abstract

A marketing programme for the financial services industry is presented and, specifically a model developed which could be used to market trust services in the banking industry. A trust referral programme provides financial institutions with the opportunity to direct personal selling efforts at customers who have made a previous commitment to the bank. A properly structured referral programme will not only benefit the trust department, but also provide a higher service level for the financial institution as a whole.

Abstract

Introduction In the management literature there are numerous discussions of how managers may be affected by their cultural and social backgrounds as well as by behavioural and economic factors. The family structure and the relationship between family members, rate of acceptance of authority in the society, economic condition and overall standard of living, as well as personal and behavioural characteristics of managers contribute to differences in their management styles in different nations. Despite this general proposition about the factors which affect management styles, studies dealing with practices in developing countries are virtually non‐existent. Whatever is available for one country or one industry, specific studies demonstrate very little managerial orientation. The purpose of this article is to point out management styles prevailing among managers of both private and public sectors of the Middle Eastern countries, particularly Turkey. To this end, applicability of different management systems is discussed and managerial implications are suggested for orderly decision‐making purposes.

Abstract

The librarian and researcher have to be able to uncover specific articles in their areas of interest. This Bibliography is designed to help. Volume IV, like Volume III, contains features to help the reader to retrieve relevant literature from MCB University Press' considerable output. Each entry within has been indexed according to author(s) and the Fifth Edition of the SCIMP/SCAMP Thesaurus. The latter thus provides a full subject index to facilitate rapid retrieval. Each article or book is assigned its own unique number and this is used in both the subject and author index. This Volume indexes 29 journals indicating the depth, coverage and expansion of MCB's portfolio.

Abstract

Introduction As Gabriel said, “There can be little doubt that the inexorably widening gulf between the standards of living of the rich nations and the abject misery of the poor nations represents … the most portentous challenge of our time”. To date several explanations have been proposed to account for the differences in rates of growth among nations, but one factor which emerges as the single most important determinant of economic growth is management. Furthermore there is a common belief among political leaders and experts that under‐development of managerial capability at all levels is a major cause of retarded economic progress in developing nations. It follows that if a country is to experience rapid economic growth, then development of managerial capabilities conducive to economic progress is inevitable. However, an increase in both the quality and the quantity of managerial capabilities above all necessitates a reconditioning of the managerial climate in a country. This is based on the premise that development of managerial capabilities is influenced by the economic, political, legal, educational, social and cultural conditions prevailing in the environment.
