Abstract

Purpose

This work aims to investigate the feasibility of recycling waste plastic (polyethylene terephthalate) as a coarse aggregate for producing blended cement concrete modified with fly ash and pond ash.

Design/methodology/approach

The low, medium and high controlled strength blended cement concrete modified with varied proportions of fly and pond ashes were produced. Manufactured sand and recycled plastic coarse aggregate (RPCA) replaced normal fine and coarse aggregates. Concrete samples were tested for workability, mechanical and durability characteristics. Microstructural analysis was performed on cement concrete blended with fly and pond ashes and compared to conventional concrete samples.

Findings

All concrete mixes showed better flowability with values greater than 200 mm. Besides, the maximum flow time was approximately 8 s. The wet density of blended cement concrete-RPCA-based concretes was approximately 30% lower than that of conventional concrete. The compressive strengths of the controlled strength mix at 7 and 28 days were within the specified ranges. While the conventional concrete had slightly higher permeability, the blended cement concrete-RPCA-based concretes had better thermal resistivity and lower thermal conductivity. The scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed the densification of the microstructure due to the filler effects of fly and pond ashes.

Originality/value

This study establishes the prospects of substituting RPCA with normal coarse aggregate in the production of controlled low-strength blended cement concrete, offering benefits of structural fill concrete, lower permeability and thermal conductivity, higher thermal resistivity and reduced density and shrinkage.

Four cast iron lions guard the charming Lions footbridge crossing St. Petersburg's Griboedov Canal. The first author strolled across the bridge on an August evening in 1998 with a Russian friend, Polina. The experience presents a parable for concluding this volume:As we crossed the bridge in the dark, we barely avoided stepping into a gaping hole in the deck half way across. A person could easily fall through. I reacted as a typical American, immediately taking responsibility for doing something about the problem, looking for some board to place over the hole or a barrier to warn pedestrians or someone to report the hazard to who would address it promptly. Polina indicated that no Russian would make such a fuss, and she could think of no one to report the hazard to who would respond. As we stood discussing this problem before two of the guardian lions, a group of drunken soldiers began to cross the bridge from the far side, arm in arm, singing loudly. Sure enough, one slipped through the hole and, but for his comrades holding his arms, he would have plunged into the canal. Surely they will report it, I said, but Polina was doubtful. She saw little chance for some protective action to fix the bridge or even to warn passers-by to beware. We went on our way mindful of the problem left behind. Perhaps a month after my return to the U.S., I received an email from Polina that she had gone to the bridge and, to her surprise, it was fixed. “Perhaps,” she wrote, “there is hope for Russia after all.”

Abstract

Environmental issues, emissions of greenhouse gases, depletion of fossil fuels and the rise in fuel prices have led to the evolution of a new mode of transportation. Electric vehicles (EVs) are being initiated to address ecological worries. However, many factors affect people's perceptions towards the purchase of EVs in India. This study aims to evaluate various aspects that impact the adoption of EVs and highlight the problems customers face. It emphasises evaluating EV adoption in Maharashtra. An exploratory and descriptive study was conducted to understand people's preferences towards EVs in India. The exploratory research identified factors affecting people's decision-making while purchasing vehicles. These factors were further evaluated to understand the most significant factors in purchasing EVs. People's preferences have changed over the years. However, the price of EVs is higher than their convenience; in Maharashtra, the infrastructure still needs to be developed to maintain such EVs. As it is the initial stage, people are waiting for further responses so that they can think of buying it.

Abstract

Purpose

The potential of vehicle ad hoc networks (VANETs) to improve driver and passenger safety and security has made them a hot topic in the field of intelligent transportation systems (ITSs). VANETs have different characteristics and system architectures from mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), with a primary focus on vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication. But protecting VANETs from malicious assaults is crucial because they can undermine network security and safety.

Design/methodology/approach

The black hole attack is a well-known danger to VANETs. It occurs when a hostile node introduces phony routing tables into the network, potentially damaging it and interfering with communication. A safe ad hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV) routing protocol has been created in response to this issue. By adding cryptographic features for source and target node verification to the route request (RREQ) and route reply (RREP) packets, this protocol improves upon the original AODV routing system.

Findings

Through the use of cryptographic-based encryption and decryption techniques, the suggested method fortifies the VANET connection. In addition, other network metrics are taken into account to assess the effectiveness of the secure AODV routing protocol under black hole attacks, including packet loss, end-to-end latency, packet delivery ratio (PDR) and routing request overhead. Results from simulations using an NS-2.33 simulator show how well the suggested fix works to enhance system performance and lessen the effects of black hole assaults on VANETs.

Originality/value

All things considered, the safe AODV routing protocol provides a strong method for improving security and dependability in VANET systems, protecting against malevolent attacks and guaranteeing smooth communication between cars and infrastructure.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents an analysis of how health intersects with the experience of housing insecurity and homelessness, specifically for migrant women. The authors argue that it is important to understand the specificities of the interplay of these different factors to continue the advancement of our understanding and practice as advocates for health and housing security.

Design/methodology/approach

An exploratory, qualitative, methodological approach was adopted, using a broad definition of housing insecurity: from absolute homelessness (e.g. residing rough) to invisible homelessness (e.g. couch surfing) to those at risk of homelessness. In total, 26 newcomer (foreign-born women who came to live in Canada during the previous ten years, regardless of their immigration status) women were recruited in Montreal, Canada. Participants were recruited directly through advertisements in public places and in collaboration with community organizations (women’s centers, homeless shelters, crisis centers, domestic violence shelters, immigrant settlement agencies and ethnic associations) and they self-identified as having experienced housing insecurity. Efforts were made to include a diversity of immigrant statuses as well as diversity in ethnicity, race, country of origin, family composition, sexual orientation, age and range of physical and mental ability. Women were engaged in semi-structured, open-ended interviews lasting approximately 1 h. Interviews were conducted in English or French in a location and time of participants’ choosing.

Findings

The findings are presented around three themes: how health problems instigate and maintain migrant women’s housing insecurity and homelessness; ways in which women’s immigration trajectories and legal status may influence their health experiences; and particular coping strategies that migrant women employ in efforts to maintain or manage their health. The authors conclude with implications of these findings for both policy and practice in relation to migrant women who experience or are at risk of housing insecurity and homelessness.

Originality/value

Intersections of women experiencing migration and housing insecurity in Canadian contexts have rarely been examined. This paper addresses a gap in the literature in terms of topic and context, but also in terms of sharing the voices of migrant women with direct experience with housing insecurity.

Abstract

Purpose

Khan Jahan Ali (KJA) Bridge was constructed to promote industrial and commercial activity and improve economic and employment activity for local people. This study assessed the post-socioeconomic and environmental impacts of KJA Bridge on the inhabitants living adjacent to 2 Km from the bridge. As there is a slum adjacent to the bridge, the bridge has impacted much on the improvement of the social economic condition and lifestyle of the slum people.

Design/methodology/approach

The study approached a questionnaire-based field survey data collection through interviewing the people in the surrounding areas. To assess the environmental impacts, land cover change (LCC), carbon emissions and land surface temperature (LST) data were derived from Landsat images and processed in geospatial environment.

Findings

The study suggests that after bridge construction, 84% people have new jobs and about 87% people's income level has been increased. As a tourist spot, the bridge served employment opportunities for the 12% of the inhabitants. About 83% house structures have been improved, where the percentages of pucca and semi-pucca houses increased by 11% and 23%, respectively. The frequency of school-going children and literacy rate also increased. Despite all the socioeconomic development, 7.48% agricultural, 9.75% vegetation, 1.74% waterbodies were declined. Net carbon emissions increased to 13,432.39 tons from 3,323.46 tons; average LST increased from 25.750 to 32.550°C after the bridge construction.

Originality/value

This study focused on descriptive statistical analysis and portrayed the impact of the bridge on social, economic and environment from a micro point of view.

Abstract

Purpose

In this article, we present the numerical solution of fractional Sturm-Liouville problems by using generalized shifted Chebyshev polynomials.

Design/methodology/approach

We combine right Caputo and left Riemann–Liouville fractional differential operators for the construction of fractional Sturm–Liouville operators. The proposed algorithm is developed using operational integration matrices of generalized shifted Chebyshev polynomials. We introduce a new bound on the coefficients of the shifted. Chebyshev polynomials subsequently employed to establish an upper bound for error in the approximation of a function by shifted Chebyshev polynomials.

Findings

We have solved fractional initial value problems, terminal value problems and Sturm–Liouville problems by plotting graphs and comparing the results. We have presented the comparison of approximated solutions with existing results and exact numerical solutions. The presented numerical problems with satisfactory results show the applicability of the proposed method to produce an approximate solution with accuracy.

Originality/value

The presented method has been applied to a specific class of fractional differential equations, which involve fractional derivatives of a function with respect to some other function. Keeping this in mind, we have modified the classical Chebyshev polynomials so that they involve the same function with respect to which fractional differentiation is performed. This modification is of great help to analyze the newly introduced polynomials from analytical and numerical point of view. We have compared our numerical results with some other numerical methods in the literature and obtained better results.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the association between unemployment insurance (UI) benefits and firms’ future performance as well as the association between UI benefits and volatility of firms’ future performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Quantitative analyses are used to perform empirical testing, and the variables in this study have been selected from previous literature. Empirical data consists of UI benefits data published from 2003 to 2012 on the US Department of Labor website, accounting data from Compustat, and stock return data from CRSP.

Findings

Unemployment benefits are positively associated with firms’ future earnings and cash flows. Also, unemployment benefits are negatively associated with volatility of firms’ future earnings and cash flows. Finally, the positive association between unemployment benefits and firms’ future performance is more pronounced for firms with larger changes in labor force, and the negative association between unemployment benefits and volatility of firms’ future performance is more pronounced for firms with higher labor force volatility and capital structure volatility.

Research limitations/implications

To the extent that other correlated omitted variables exist, the readers are asked to interpret the findings in this paper with caution.

Originality/value

This study contributes to prior literature on labor economics, finance, and accounting. The findings may be of interest to academic researchers and policy makers.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a novel methodology for optimal voltage source converter (VSC) station installation in hybrid alternating current (AC)/direct current (DC) transmission networks.

Design/methodology/approach

In this analysis, a unified power flow model has been developed for the optimal power flow (OPF) problem for VSC-based high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) transmission network and solved using a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The impact of the HVDC converter under abnormal conditions considering N-1 line outage contingency is analyzed against the congestion relief of the overall transmission network. The average loadability index is used as a severity indicator and minimized along with overall transmission line losses by replacing each AC line with an HVDC line independently.

Findings

The developed unified OPF (UOPF) model converged successfully with (PSO) algorithm. The OPF problem has satisfied the defined operational constraints of the power system, and comparative results are obtained for objective function with different HVDC test configurations represented in the paper. In addition, the impact of VSC converter location is determined on objective function value.

Originality/value

A novel methodology has been developed for the optimal installation of the converter station for the point-to-point configuration of HVDC transmission. The developed unified OPF model and methodology for selecting the AC bus for converter installation has effectively reduced congestion in transmission lines under single line outage contingency.

To better understand the relationship between the headquarters and subsidiaries of multinational corporations, we introduce and test a theoretical framework that builds on and extends the positive agency theoretic corporate governance literature. Results indicate that there are three types of subsidiary bundles of corporate governance mechanisms that are used by multinational corporations. In addition, the following factors can help predict what type of subsidiary bundle a multinational corporation will use to align the interests of its headquarters with a particular subsidiary: the multinational corporation’s international strategy, its subsidiary’s importance, environmental uncertainty faced by its subsidiary, and its subsidiary’s age.
