Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present spot pattern welding (SPW) as a scanning strategy for laser-foil-printing (LFP) additive manufacturing (AM) in place of the previously used continuous pattern welding (CPW) (line-raster scanning). The SPW strategy involves generating a sequence of overlapping spot welds on the metal foil, allowing the laser to form dense and uniform weld beads. This in turn reduces thermal gradients, promotes material consolidation and helps mitigate process-related risks such as thermal cracking, porosity, keyholing and Marangoni effects.

Design/methodology/approach

304L stainless steel (SS) feedstock is used to fabricate test specimens using the LFP system. Imaging techniques are used to examine the melt pool dimensions and layer bonding. In addition, the parts are evaluated for residual stresses, mechanical strength and grain size.

Findings

Compared to CPW, SPW provides a more reliable heating/cooling relationship that is less dependent on part geometry. The overlapping spot welds distribute heat more evenly, minimizing the risk of elevated temperatures during the AM process. In addition, the resulting dense and uniform weld beads contribute to lower residual stresses in the printed part.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to thoroughly investigate SPW as a scanning strategy using the LFP process. In general, SPW presents a promising strategy for securing embedded sensors into LFP parts while minimizing residual stresses.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present the development and experimental study of a fully automated system using a novel laser additive manufacturing technology called laser foil printing (LFP), to fabricate metal parts layer by layer. The mechanical properties of parts fabricated with this novel system are compared with those of comparable methodologies to emphasize the suitability of this process.

Design/methodology/approach

Test specimens and parts with different geometries were fabricated from 304L stainless steel foil using an automated LFP system. The dimensions of the fabricated parts were measured, and the mechanical properties of the test specimens were characterized in terms of mechanical strength and elongation.

Findings

The properties of parts fabricated with the automated LFP system were compared with those of parts fabricated with the powder bed fusion additive manufacturing methods. The mechanical strength is higher than those of parts fabricated by the laser powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition technologies.

Originality/value

To the best knowledge of authors, this is the first time a fully automated LFP system has been developed and the properties of its fabricated parts were compared with other additive manufacturing methods for evaluation.

Abstract

Purpose

Contextualizing its argument specifically into the role and impact of the traditional political culture on the process of modernization, this paper aims to examine the “culture matters” approach through the two‐century experience of the top‐down modernization of the Ottoman‐Turkish civilization in the realm of state‐labor relations.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper makes a comparative analysis of the interplay between the state and craft associations in the Ottoman Empire, and then the state and labor organizations in contemporary Turkey in terms of the influence of the rules, norms and institutions transferred by the bureaucratic élites from Western Europe.

Findings

The paper concludes that a substantive democratic setting for the interplay of the state and labor organizations could not be built up without a self‐supportive political culture in view of the fact that the process of top‐down modernization/Europeanization in the Ottoman‐Turkish context has given rise to a never‐ending center‐periphery dichotomy between both inter‐class and intra‐class relationships.

Originality/value

The paper sheds light on the labor relations part of the Ottoman‐Turkish political culture and reveals its impact on the never‐ending top‐down modernization initiative.

Abstract

Purpose

As the global paradigm in economics shifts, Islamic economics is attracting more attention as an alternative sector. The most common and most active institutional structure of Islamic economics is in the form of Islamic finance and banking. Islamic finance and banking have been the centre of innovation in many economies in recent years. In this regard, product development is a vital element in driving the success of Islamic financial institutions (IFIs). The product development of IFIs is one of the key elements of their overall economic performance. This study aims to fill the gap in the literature concerning the product development process of IFIs in secular economies.

Design/methodology/approach

Verily, product development is a complex process; it is likely that introducing specific models will be useful for expanding the activities of IFIs. In this study, contemporary source materials are used to develop this conceptual research.

Findings

It suggests two separate methodologies for the product development process of IFIs in secular economies to overhaul two criticised product-based problems. To the best of the author’s knowledge, it is the first attempt to model the product development process for IFIs in a secular economic setup.

Originality/value

Recently, this study is the first attempt for modelling product development in IFIs under secular economies. Advances in the field of Shari’ah-compliant product development is important for researchers and professional.

Abstract

Purpose

Cash-waqf is one of the transformative models of waqf assets submission to optimize the receipt of waqf of money in Indonesia. Currently, cash-waqf can be paid through the platforms that are integrated with digital sharia banking systems (DSBS) such as Jadiberkah.Id (Bank Syariah Mandiri), Digital Wakaf Hasanah (Bank Negara Indonesia Syariah) and other waqf online services provided by Bank Syariah Bukopin, Bank Commerce International Merchant Bankers Niaga and Bank Rakyat Indonesia Syariah. This study aims to investigate the role of DSBS in stimulating Muslim youth’s decision to endow cash-waqf in Indonesia.

Design/methodology/approach

This research involved 225 Muslim youth from several universities across the Special Province of Yogyakarta and Central Java as the research respondents. The analysis was conducted using partial least square structural equation modeling with WarpPLS 7.0.

Findings

The result of the structural model indicates that the research model is structurally good since it meets all model criteria. Perceived ease of use (PEU) is found as the most significant predictor of perceived usefulness (PU). Both generate a significant effect on Muslim youths’ attitudes toward DSBS. Overall, subjective norm (SN), perceived behavioral control (PBC), PU and attitudes are important determinants that lead individual decisions to use the online cash-waqf payment through DSBS. Finally, the research findings conclude that DSBS plays a significant role in encouraging the interest of young Muslim generations to participate in cash-waqf transactions.

Originality/value

This study seeks to contribute to the existing literature by enriching the discussion on DSBS’s service, especially in the context of optimizing the collection of Islamic Philanthropy through cash-waqf transaction. Also, this study integrates theory of planned behavior (TPB) and the technology acceptance model (TAM) into a single research model to explore the determinants of cash-waqf participation in digital era.
