Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to look at the journey and experience of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) Research Data Management (RDM) practice to respond to the needs of researchers in an academic library.

Design/methodology/approach

The research data services (RDS) practice is based on the FAIR data principle. And the authors designed the RDM Stewardship framework to implement the RDS step by step.

Findings

The HKU Libraries developed and implemented a set of RDS under a research data stewardship framework in response to the recent evolving research needs for RDM amongst the academic communities. The services cover policy and procedure settings for research data planning, research data infrastructure establishment, data curation services and provision of online resources and instructional guidelines.

Originality/value

This study provides an example of an approach to respond to the needs of the academic libraries about how to start the RDS including the data policy, data repository, data librarianship and data curation.

Abstract

This chapter reports a generative AI (GenAI)-supported short-term IELTS writing course for Chinese university students. A six-step human–AI hybrid argumentative writing framework was proposed to guide the course and enhance students’ prompting skills, including the steps of claim, structure, arguments and counterarguments, credibility and reliability, extend arguments, and revisions. An I-A-I (Initial-Assisted-Independent) approach was adopted to facilitate students’ critical thinking skills and the independent analysis of the content generated by GenAI. Ten students participated in the course, submitted their pre- and post-writing samples, and accepted the interviews. T-tests on participants’ writing samples showed that they performed significantly better in IELTS academic writing, proposing main claims, and organising the structure of the essay. The interview data further revealed that the course helped participants structure their essay, provide evidence for arguments, and revise their essay independently. The results underscored two crucial components of AI literacy in using ChatGPT for academic writing, including the prompt skills to ensure the synergistic interactions with GenAI, and the critical thinking skills to critically assess the responses of ChatGPT. In summary, the chapter provides theoretical contributions and pedagogical implications on the application of GenAI for university students to enhance their academic writing abilities and equip them with the literacy of using GenAI for academic writing.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the factors explaining the success of Hong Kong’s Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) and the challenges which it faces in maintaining that success.

Design/methodology/approach

Utilising a review of primary and secondary sources, a syndrome of success characteristics is developed and analysed against a backdrop of recent high-level scandals involving corruption and unethical behaviour.

Findings

The paper concludes that the institutionalisation of key structures and processes has enabled the ICAC to perform successfully to date but that the prospect of political interference may represent a significant future challenge.

Originality/value

Although there has been widespread attention to ICAC success factors, some important features have been neglected and little academic attention has been devoted to recent political challenges to its position.

Abstract

Purpose

Cruise tourism is the fastest-growing segment of the shipping and port industry. This study aims to develop an analytic model to assess the key criteria and sub-criteria influencing four cruise port's development in Taiwan.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the literature review, four criteria and 13 sub-criteria are developed and analysed by fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP). Four cruise ports include Kaohsiung, Keelung, Taichung and Hualien ports. The 26 relevant field experts (including cruise operators, governmental officials and academics) were invited to provide information for assessing the sub-criteria in the model.

Findings

The results indicate that port infrastructure and facilities are the most important criterion, followed by port-city development plans, port geography and climate and port regulations and services. In addition, the three most important sub-criteria overall are the onshore tourism programme, the city’s historical and cultural features and the green port hinterland transport system. Also, Keelung port is ranked as the best port, followed by Kaohsiung, Taichung and Hualien.

Originality/value

As Asia is an important cruise market in the world (ranked as third) and passenger number in Taiwan has achieved the top two in Asia, denoting Taiwan is a good market to develop an evaluation model of cruise ports. The findings present a holistic picture of the relative importance of the various criteria associated with cruise port development and raise issues related to cruise port marketing and the economic and environmental sustainability of ports and their hinterlands.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the efficiency changes of 23 major Asian container ports for the period from 2000 to 2007. In addition to assess the general trend, it also attempts to decompose the overall efficiency change into technological efficiency change, technical efficiency change and scale efficiency change to help port authorities to devise operational strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

The Malmquist index method is used, which is derived from data envelopment analysis. In this model, technological improvement comes from using state-of-the-art technologies, technical improvement is from rationalizing of port inputs and scale efficiency is from adjustment of port operational scales.

Findings

On average, the investigated ports have improved their efficiencies by 14.3 per cent. Such efficiency gains can be attributed to a 41 per cent increase in pure technical efficiency, a 47.5 per cent increase in scale efficiency and a 30.5 per cent decrease in technological efficiency. The scale efficiency contributes the most to the overall efficiency improvement, while technical and technological effects seem to have less impact. The fact that technological efficiency has little variance seems to suggest that this source of efficiency gain may not bring substantial competitive advantage.

Research limitations/implications

The sample period is 2000-2007, so the impact from the Asian financial crisis or the economic downturn was not covered. Also, the port throughputs data do not separate shipment and transhipment.

Originality/value

This study provides valuable suggestions to improve efficiency for container ports along the “Maritime Silk Road.”

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to investigate the structural relationship between motivation, involvement, satisfaction and loyalty in the context of hiking tourism in Hong Kong.

Design/methodology/approach

This study develops a comprehensive conceptual framework that integrates motivations, satisfaction, loyalty and involvement. A convenience survey of hikers (n = 859) was conducted in Tai Mo Shan Country Park in Hong Kong, from December 2020 to May 2021. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results indicated that stimulus–avoidance motive and involvement had direct effects on satisfaction. Stimulus–avoidance, social and competence–mastery motives were correlated with involvement which indirectly affected satisfaction. Loyalty was directly affected by satisfaction and involvement.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the existing literature by filling the research gap in hiking tourism. It not only provides a novel understanding of tourist behavior but also offers valuable implications for improving hiking experiences and meeting the needs of hikers effectively.
