Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to understand better how business strategies impact a company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Design/methodology/approach

In this research, two categories of business strategy are proposed, and partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was used to test the research model using a sample of 150 valid surveys data from the Chinese manufacturing firms industry in Africa.

Findings

This study indicates business strategy in terms of real support and development approach plan in the Chinese manufacturing industry has a crucial influence on CSR effectiveness. Business strategy leads to effective CSR practices by adding value to firm products, services, marketing strategies and technological investment.

Practical implications

Companies can use a support strategy for effective CSR to improve corporate social performance. The study expands upon previous insights into corporate leaders enhancing their CSR strategy because it may successfully contribute to environmental preservation.

Social implications

This research mobilized and found academic gaps in business strategy regarding real support and development approach; it is necessary to combine the impacts of business strategy at multiple levels of analysis to explain the expansion of CSR to integrate the stakeholder theory.

Originality/value

This study offers a deeper perspective and provides empirical evidence of a better understanding of CSR effectiveness by emphasizing the role of business strategy. Effective CSR implementation requires integrating the influences of company strategy and real support at multiple levels of analysis to explain CSR dispersion.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the determinants of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Chinese higher education institutions.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a sample of 352 students, this research uses partial least squares structural equation modeling to examine how educational aspects impact students’ choice of university selection in Chinese higher education institutions through the mediating role of CSR.

Findings

The empirical results indicate that educational aspects weakly influence students’ choice of university selection. In addition, the study confirms that CSR plays a significant mediating role, demonstrating a positive relationship between educational aspects and students’ university selection. This study sheds light on the relationship between educational aspects and students’ choice of university selection, highlighting the substantial impact of CSR as a mediator.

Originality/value

This research contributes novel perspectives on CSR integration with a focus on education for sustainable development, enriching the existing literature on CSR in higher education. By categorizing CSR into Carroll’s pyramid, this study reveals how factors related to education can, directly and indirectly, influence students’ university choices through CSR in Chinese higher education institutions. The findings suggest that Chinese higher education institutions can enhance student enrollment by innovating their educational aspects and CSR practices.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a systematic review of numerous writings addressing quality performance-geared contracting (PC) and self-stated performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The study systematically reviewed 134 refereed papers across various fields published between from 2000 to 2018. A categorization framework of PC is suggested addressing fundamental dimensions of its plan and management.

Findings

The relative analysis of pertinent articles advancing interdisciplinary perspective encourages learning and provides knowledge about quality management in organizations especially at individual and organizational levels.

Research limitations/implications

The outcomes indicate that much of the present-day wide-ranging performance contracting studies do not have robust theoretical grounds. Studies are also inclined to certain theories for instance agency theory and play down other theories with the likelihood of contributing to quality management.

Practical implications

Performance contracting between citizens and public entities is important in that the written contract limits what the public entities, for instance, the government can and cannot do and informs on the rights and privileges of citizens, thus contracts to form the core of a free society.

Originality/value

This review demonstrates that performance contracting is useful in performance improvement if proper job design and contract management exist.
