Abstract

Purpose

Due to the certain risk carried in offshore petroleum installations, the integrity of these installations needs to be maintained at all times. Thus, asset integrity management (AIM) needs to be formulated and monitored to achieve the integrity objective. The purpose of this paper is to study the practices and progression of strategic AIM planning in the petroleum industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is written based on a literature study, observations and data collected from industry practitioners through an online questionnaire and interviews to study the AIM practices in their organization. Validation of the results is performed through respondents’ reviews and cross-referencing with existing literature and supplemental data.

Findings

The paper identifies, analyses and validates the work structure in formulating an AIM strategic plan.

Research limitations/implications

Even though the research focuses on the AIM practices of offshore petroleum installations, the result can be implemented in similar fields.

Originality/value

Researchers or practitioners can benefit from the knowledge gained of current practices and the presented work structure in establishing an AIM strategic plan.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the current research approaches in asset management (AM), to evaluate some of the prevalent research methods in AM studies and to summarize the result into a building-block research that may provide design guidelines in AM studies.

Design/methodology/approach

AM publications were selected for this study using by online search engines and the publications were classified based on the appropriate research approaches. The results will be discussed and a suitable building-block research for AM studies will be constructed based on the identified research approaches.

Findings

The paper identifies, analyses and validates the research approaches found in a sample of online AM publications. The research-approaches and their associated methods will be discussed to develop understanding of the context of these approaches in AM research.

Research limitations/implications

The paper limits the study in publications within the AM field in the petroleum industry. However, the research methods that are presented covers the most common research methods found in publications. Thus, although the sample of publications may not represent the entire population, the same approach and result can be used in similar topics and conditions.

Originality/value

Researchers or practitioners can benefit from the building blocks of research to develop a research design for AM studies. Moreover, the paper also provides information on common research methods and data gathering techniques that can be used for similar studies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a multi-variable analysis (MVA) model for predicting potential delays in the delivery of subsea inspection, maintenance and repair (IMR) services.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on data from 351 subsea IMR service jobs executed between 2006 and 2008, a MVA model is proposed for predicting the potential delays in the delivery of IMR services in different plausible scenarios.

Findings

A model for predicting the delays in IMR service delivery, based on four practical variables that are readily available during the planning phase, was developed and tested. The factors contributing to delays in petroleum subsea IMR services based on importance are: water depth, weather, job complexity, job uncertainty as well as job complexity mix.

Research limitations/implications

The MVA model is developed based on analyzing subsea IMR service jobs performed in the petroleum industry from 2006-2008. The model can be used in the planning stage to predict potential delays in service delivery based on practical variables available.

Originality/value

The research proposes a MVA model for predicting delays in service delivery. The model is useful for predicting potential delays in service delivery and for improving the plan based on model analysis results.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to present a concept for the development of technical integrity management services (TIMS) for production facilities that combines multidisciplinary activities and competences to optimize operational expenses and improve production reliability while keeping focus on health, safety and environment.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on a literature survey and observation of industrial practices. The industrial practices are observed through active participation in the development of the concept.

Findings

The concept involves a main service provider to integrate various competences and activities in service packages to provide holistic solutions to the customers' technical integrity needs. Such a concept could facilitate development of a new type of maintenance and modification solutions in which the maintenance strategies are developed based on real‐time data acquisition and analysis of actual asset condition.

Practical implications

The conceptual approach presented provides insight into the process of combining expertise and activities from different disciplines in one service solution package. The concept can be used by managers to develop better technical integrity solutions for production facilities.

Originality/value

The paper presents a concept that can be used in industry by managers to develop service solutions in the maintenance area that could improve the effectiveness and efficiency of maintenance processes in capital‐intensive industries. TIMS is expected to provide a service solution that may change operation and maintenance practices as well as the relationship between the involved companies/specialists.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify and discuss maintenance challenges and maintenance practices for subsea petroleum production systems.

Design/methodology/approach

Maintenance challenges, current practices and factors that influence the maintenance and support practices were identified by a literature review and by using a case study conducted in the Norwegian oil and gas industry. The case study was based on semi‐structured face‐to‐face interviews with a number of experts working in the subsea systems’ design, installation and support services in the Norwegian oil and gas industry.

Findings

The paper identifies and discusses subsea petroleum production system failures, maintenance, inspection, modification and support practices. Findings from literature are validated, and new challenges are identified and discussed.

Research limitations/implications

The research is based on a case study in the Norwegian petroleum industry, but may be applicable in other countries as well. The subsea production systems are critical production systems, and failures may result in long downtime and costly maintenance, inspection and support services. Hence, inspection, maintenance and modification intervention support services requires careful project planning, implementation and execution, taking into account all influencing factors.

Originality/value

The identified challenges can be used by decision makers in offshore maintenance projects.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss operation and maintenance challenges under Arctic conditions and to propose a methodology to assess systems' reliability, maintainability and maintenance costs under the influence of the Arctic operational environment.

Design/methodology/approach

A model is suggested for quantifying maintenance costs while taking into account uncertainty due to lack of appropriate data and operational experience using the proportional hazard model and proportional repair model as well as Monte Carlo simulation.

Findings

The results show that the operating environment has a considerable influence on the number of failures, the maintenance and repair times and consequently on maintenance cost. Forecasting the maintenance costs based on technical characteristics (e.g. reliability and maintainability) and considering the operational environment, as well as including uncertainty analysis using Monte Carlo simulation, provide more trustworthy information in the decision‐making process.

Practical implications

There are few data and little experience available regarding the operation of offshore oil and gas production systems in the Arctic region. Using the available data collected from similar systems, but in a different operational environment, may result in uncertain or incorrect analysis results. Hence, the method that is used for maintenance cost analysis must be able to quantify the effect of the operating environment on the system reliability and maintainability as well as to quantify the uncertainty.

Originality/value

The paper presents a statistical approach that will be useful in predicting maintenance cost considering the lack of appropriate reliability data from equipment operated in Arctic conditions. The approach presented is valuable for the industrial practitioners in the Arctic region, and may also be adapted to other areas where there is lack of data and operational experience.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify and discuss various factors that will influence the process of installing and maintaining subsea equipment in the oil and gas (O&G) industry.

Design/methodology/approach

Influencing factors and their attributes are identified using a case study on subsea installations conducted in the Norwegian O&G industry. A number of experts were interviewed. A survey was conducted to rank the importance of the influence factors.

Findings

The paper identifies, analyzes and validates the factors and attributes that may impact the installation and maintenance strategy of subsea components. The factors are ranked according to importance and as practiced in the industry.

Research limitations/implications

The research is based on a case study in the Norwegian O&G industry, but the approach and results could be adapted to other industries as well.

Originality/value

The identified factors can be used by decision makers in the development of offshore projects.

Abstract

Purpose

Most advanced durable industrial products need some kind of support to compensate for weaknesses in design or in product exploitation. Aims to examine different scenarios for product support and discusses approaches for development of product support strategy for conventional and functional products.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on a case study of a manufacturer of advanced durable industrial production systems.

Findings

Traditionally, the customer buys, operates, and maintains equipment used in production systems. Alternatively, the customer can buy the performance, instead of the physical product. In such cases, the manufacturer is responsible for operating, maintaining, and supporting the product in addition to designing and making it. Thus, the long‐term profit for both user and manufacturer will depend on the product's designed‐in life cycle costs, RAMS (reliability, availability, maintainability and supportability) characteristics, as well as on the effectiveness and efficiency of the product exploitation and support processes. In general, product support is a source of income for the manufacturer. In a functional product scenario, the need for product support is a liability and a cost driver for the manufacturer. Hence, delivery of performance requires a fundamentally different approach for product support strategy.

Originality/value

An examination of different scenarios and different approaches for manufacturers' product support strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to identify different service innovation drivers, innovation process activities and to understand industrial services innovation management and coordination, as well as to develop a framework for industrial service innovation management and coordination.

Design/methodology/approach

The study involved collection of information and data from the literature and the Norwegian oil and gas (O&G) industry. A survey was conducted to get an overview of existing practices and guided interviews were conducted to confirm the findings of the survey.

Findings

The study indicates that the market needs are considered the most important innovation process driver, feedback from the customers is the most important activity to encourage service innovations, whilst return on investments is the most important decision‐making factor in evaluating innovation feasibility. Employees are the most important source of innovation ideas. Furthermore, interactions between different companies, as well as involvement of customer, employees and suppliers in the innovation process are becoming increasingly important.

Practical implications

The study shows that service providers and receivers often collaborate in the innovation processes, and that many of the activities are performed simultaneously. This results in the collaborative parties needing to put resources on managing and coordinating the innovation process in a structured, effective and efficient way. The proposed framework for service innovation management and coordination provides practitioners with a structured approach to manage industrial service innovations.

Research limitations/implications

The findings are based on the data collected from a number of companies from the O&G industry in Norway.

Originality/value

The paper identifies different innovation process drivers and activities and proposes a modified framework for industrial services innovation management and coordination based on the study analysis, interaction with the practitioners and using available literature on innovation management.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to discuss various contractual issues that could encourage industrial service innovations with special reference to improving operation and maintenance process effectiveness of complex and advanced production facilities in the capital‐intensive industries.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study was performed to study the influence of contractual relationships on industrial service innovations. The study focused on contractual relationships between service companies that sell operation and maintenance services to production facility operators in the Norwegian oil and gas industry.

Findings

The case study shows that service innovations are desired in most of the operation and maintenance contracts, but existing contractual relationships most often do not support innovations. Moreover, contract duration, contract type and control mechanisms can influence cooperation and collaboration during contract execution.

Research limitations/implications

The findings are based on a case study with participants from the Norwegian oil and gas industry. The study is limited to knowledge and technology based services required to support operation and maintenance of advanced, complex and integrated production facilities. However, we believe that the study is of value for other capital‐intensive industries such as mining, energy, paper and pulp, chemical, etc.

Originality/value

The development of contracts that support industrial service innovations and create an environment for cooperation and collaboration could be of value to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operation and maintenance processes in the capital‐intensive industries. Studies focusing on improving contractual relationships and service innovations for operation and maintenance services are scant.
