Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present the findings of research commissioned by a Primary Care Trust in the UK to assess the implementation of a new pilot Human Givens mental health service (HGS) within primary care.

Design/methodology/approach

Participating General Practitioners practices were designated as either “Human givens” or “Control” practices. The study focused on service users with mild to moderate depressed mood measured using HADS. The well-being of these participants was examined at the point of referral, and after four, eight and 12 months using three well-being questionnaires.

Findings

The results revealed that emotional well-being significantly improved during the first four months following referral for both groups and this improvement was maintained up to and including one year post referral. Compared to the Control group Human givens therapy was found to be of shorter duration, lasting one or two sessions compared to standard treatment which lasted on average four sessions.

Originality/value

Apart from the psychological insight and emotional support, it is suggested that Human givens therapy might help the client to better function in society and maintain a sense of social integration. This has benefits to other providers of social care.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to describe the development of a suite of social inclusion outcome measures and how they are being applied in practice within Stockport.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper gives a description of the development approach; the development of the measures and how the data collection systems have been established.

Findings

A suite of practical measures of social inclusion has been developed that are being used to inform local service delivery, commissioning and service redesign with the purpose of evidencing the effectiveness of provision in delivering social inclusion for people who have used mental health services in Stockport.

Research limitations/implications

The paper does not contain data. It is anticipated that the data will inform a business case for commissioning in new ways and which may be the subject of a further paper.

Practical implications

The paper describes the practical approaches that have led to the development of the measures.

Social implications

The measures will be able to demonstrate the social impact of services for people who use them.

Originality/value

Mental health services are striving to develop meaningful measures that are embedded in day‐to‐day practice and are meaningful to people who use services. These measures and the way they are being used in services will provide evidence to service commissioners of effectiveness and have been signed off as such by commissioners. The outcomes framework will have implications locally for the implementation of payment by results in mental health.

Abstract

The mobilityleaders programme is a key strategic initiative, launched by BT in November 1998. One of the main aims of the programme is to facilitate the creation and exchange of knowledge between BT's joint ventures with mobile operating licences and a number of key suppliers. At the heart of the mobilityleaders programme is a Web‐based interactive network. Members of the mobilityleaders programme have access to a large range of resources via the website. In addition, the mobilityleaders programme organises face‐to‐face meetings and workshops between representatives of the member companies. This paper outlines the key aspects of the overall mobilityleaders programme from its inception through its first year of operation. It describes many of the practical issues that need to be considered in the creation of a successful crosscultural, intercompany knowledge‐sharing programme.
