Abstract

Purpose

When Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confronted the aggressors on the military front while galvanising Ukrainians and fighting a parallel war on the information battlefield. This study examines Zelenskyy’s communication strategy in the first 100 days of the conflict and his use of mainstream media to share the Ukrainian story globally. It also aims to provide an opportunity in modern history to explore communication led by a head of state.

Design/methodology/approach

This case study focuses on Zelenskyy’s external communication with the global mainstream media and evaluates his 77 official speeches and interview transcripts within the first 100 days. Using the inductive categorisation approach (Berg, 2009), a comprehensive dataset analysis was made to distill the different message types, media platforms used, target audiences and any embedded rhetorical elements. These were evaluated using the stakeholder theory (Freeman, 2002), mediating the media model (Pang, 2010) and information vacuum (Pang, 2013; Woon and Pang, 2017) as the study’s theoretical lens.

Findings

Zelenskyy focused on four key audience groups in the first 100 days of the conflict and scaffolded his audience engagement at different points in time. He tailored his rhetoric specifically to the country of his audiences and dominated the information space by using first-person accounts to connect with audiences, ensuring disinformation and alternate narratives were debunked. His use of “direct video press release” enabled mainstream media globally to report him as they were a ready form of information subsidy.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributed to understanding Zelenskyy’s efforts in identifying targeted audiences and his curated communication strategy. Zelenskyy understood the prevailing contexts of his messages, saturated the information space on multiple platforms and sought to eliminate countervailing narratives, particularly from Russia, from forming in the information vacuum (Pang, 2013). As this study was focused on how he leveraged mainstream media, future studies could examine how he leveraged social media that were harnessed in communication. Zelenskyy’s verbal and non-verbal cues could also be examined to understand how this may influence stakeholder perceptions.

Practical implications

The study found practical lessons to show how Zelenskyy engaged with different audiences who could directly and indirectly influence Ukraine’s defence against Russian aggression and aligned his communication with his national strategic objectives even as the conflict unfolded. These can serve as a foundational framework for national leaders navigating crises in today’s information landscape and provide valuable insights into effective leadership and crisis communication.

Originality/value

Few studies have examined how a leader communicates in times of crises, specifically one of such scale with international involvement. This study is a nascent attempt to do so, with the hope that it would provide critical insights into effective media communication and lay the groundwork for future research in this evolving field.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the possible cooperation options in terms of empty container repositioning across alliances for shipping lines based in the Greater China Region (China, Taiwan and Hong Kong SAR), after the three global shipping alliances reformed in April 2017.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper offers a comprehensive review to the latest shipping alliances and introduces a new cooperative dimension among shipping lines based in the Greater China Region which are member of different shipping alliances.

Findings

Cooperation among shipping lines in the Greater China Region in terms of empty container handling is possible in terms of resource sharing among shipping lines across alliances that fosters mega shipping line formation in the future.

Practical implications

Shipping lines should review their current empty container repositioning strategies and explore cooperation among non-alliance members having headquarters in proximity for quick responsiveness in empty container repositioning plan and execution.

Originality/value

This is a research directly analyzing the empty repositioning plan of the major shipping lines and their major service routes, fleet and containers.

Abstract

Purpose

In recent years, electronic word-of-mouth (e-WOM) concerning travel products reflected in online review information has become an important reference for tourists to make their product purchase decisions, while for travel service providers (TSPs), monitoring and improving the e-WOM of their travel products is always an important task. Therefore, based on the online review information, how to capture e-WOM of travel products and find out specific ways to improve the e-WOM is a noteworthy research problem. The purpose of this paper is to develop a method for capturing and analyzing e-WOM toward travel products based on sentiment analysis and stochastic dominance.

Design/methodology/approach

Specifically, online review information of travel products is first crawled and preprocessed. Second, sentiment strengths of online review information toward travel products concerning each feature are judged. Then, the matrix of structured online review information toward travel products is formed. Further, the matrix of e-WOM comparisons between any two travel products is constructed, and e-WOM ranking concerning each travel product is determined. Finally, trade-off chart models are constructed to conduct the e-WOM improvement analyses concerning the travel products.

Findings

An empirical study based on the online review information toward six travel products crawled from the Tuniu.com website is given to illustrate the use of the proposed method.

Originality/value

The proposed method can not only realize the real-time e-WOM monitoring to travel products but also be useful for TSPs to improve the e-WOM of their travel products.

Abstract

Purpose

Nanotechnology (NT) advancements in personal protective textiles (PPT) or personal protective equipment (PPE) have alleviated spread and transmission of this highly contagious viral disease, and enabled enhancement of PPE, thereby fortifying antiviral behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

Review of a series of state of the art research papers on the subject matter.

Findings

This paper expounds on novel nanotechnological advancements in polymeric textile composites, emerging applications and fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

Research limitations/implications

As a panacea to “public droplet prevention,” textiles have proven to be potentially effective as environmental droplet barriers (EDBs).

Practical implications

PPT in form of healthcare materials including surgical face masks (SFMs), gloves, goggles, respirators, gowns, uniforms, scrub-suits and other apparels play critical role in hindering the spreading of COVID-19 and other “oral-respiratory droplet contamination” both within and outside hospitals.

Social implications

When used as double-layers, textiles display effectiveness as SFMs or surgical-fabrics, which reduces droplet transmission to <10 cm, within circumference of ∼0.3%.

Originality/value

NT advancements in textiles through nanoparticles, and sensor integration within textile materials have enhanced versatile sensory capabilities, robotics, flame retardancy, self-cleaning, electrical conductivity, flexibility and comfort, thereby availing it for health, medical, sporting, advanced engineering, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, military, automobile, food and agricultural applications, and more. Therefore, this paper expounds on recently emerging trends in nanotechnological influence in textiles for engineering and fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Focuses on business investments by Singaporean Chinese in Mainland China vis‐à‐vis the impact of the knowledge of the Chinese language, culture etc. on business success. The literature has shown four critical factors namely culture, guanxi, negotiation and communication as important facilitators for business investments in China. Chinese language, however, further moderates their influence on business investments. To explore the association between the Chinese language and the four critical factors, a sample t‐test was conducted. Additionally, the profile of Singaporean business investors in Mainland China was surveyed. The research provices insights for Singaporean and global business investors who are looking at Mainland China as a potential business opportunity.

Abstract

In this paper, we model histories of coresidence between two cohorts of urban Chinese couples, married during the Cultural Revolution and early market reform periods. Most research on coresidence pictures families cross‐sectionally, but nuclear households are a natural part of extended coresidence systems that prefer stem family arrangements. We study histories of coresidence to determine what predicts ever having coresided with the husband’s parents, comparing the predictive power of modernization theory to the impact of demographic change, the availability of household members, and the resources and needs of each generation. While married children’s needs for childcare do not propel them into coresidence, they strongly predict the likelihood of staying coresident.
