Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine the development of welfare conditionality and especially benefit sanctions in Central and Eastern Europe (the CEE) and to develop a methodology by implementing Institutional Grammar (IG) for studying rules on benefit sanctions relying only on legal text.
Design/methodology/approach
IG was used as a tool for analyzing legal regulations on benefit sanctions. It was incorporated into a social rights framework that provided a theoretical background for the study.
Findings
The paper shows the dynamic development of rules on benefit sanctions in Poland in social assistance and unemployment services. Both the harshness and strictness of these rules have increased. Simultaneously, the rules of benefit sanctions in social assistance remain more liberal than those associated with unemployment services.
Originality/value
The study presents the first comprehensive and concise overview of benefit sanctions development in the CEE and the first long-term comparison of these types of sanctions in two safety net systems operating in one country. The study also used IG for the first time in social policy research.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to explore the impact of peer recognition points (PRP) on employee engagement and motivation within organizations. It investigates whether PRP systems genuinely satisfy employees’ need for appreciation and how they can be effectively implemented to enhance employee performance and retention.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses a comprehensive literature review and analysis of existing peer recognition platforms alongside case studies of organizations implementing PRP systems. Surveys and qualitative interviews with employees and HR professionals provide additional insights into the practical application and effectiveness of PRP.
Findings
The research indicates that PRP systems significantly boost employee engagement and motivation by fulfilling the psychological need for recognition. Organizations with robust PRP programs experience lower voluntary turnover rates and higher employee satisfaction. The study also identifies and addresses potential challenges, such as lack of interest or shy employees, for implementing PRP systems effectively.
Research limitations/implications
While the study offers substantial insights into PRP's benefits, it acknowledges the limitations of generalizability due to the primary focus on IT companies. Future research should examine a more diverse range of industries and consider long-term effects. Additionally, the study emphasizes the need for continuous monitoring and adjustment of PRP systems to sustain their effectiveness.
Practical implications
The most important value of the paper is the actionable strategies provided for managers and organizations to integrate PRP into various work cultures and systems. These strategies focus on enhancing team morale and productivity, ensuring adaptability across different industries and organizational structures. The findings serve as a practical guide for fostering a more appreciative and motivated workplace culture.
Social implications
By promoting a culture of recognition and appreciation, PRP systems contribute to a more positive and supportive work environment. This, in turn, can lead to improved employee well-being, job satisfaction and a sense of belonging, ultimately enhancing the overall social dynamics within the workplace.

This paper contributes to the understanding of nonmonetary recognition strategies in HR management. It highlights the psychological benefits of peer recognition and provides practical recommendations for organizations seeking to improve their employee engagement through PRP systems. Abstract
Purpose
According to the growing role of stakeholders in the implementation of public-private partnership (PPP) initiatives, the purpose of this study is to diagnose the maturity of PPPs in Poland, taking into account the range of stakeholders’ participation in public-private initiatives.
Design/methodology/approach
The introductory study on the stakeholders of PPPs has been based on the report analysis of Polish initiatives and the case studies’ comparative analysis. The cases represent touristic projects realized within PPPs.
Findings
The results of the study indicate that the PPPs’ personal context, though recognized internationally, is to a very low extent present in the Polish case. As the PPP market is still in the process of development, the stakeholders’ issue should be taken into consideration in the processes of the PPP development in Poland.
Practical implications
As regional development is continuously a key issue, especially in rural areas context, the PPP initiatives are of great importance, and therefore the discussion of pros and cons in this context may contribute to the legislation at the regional level.
Originality/value
The study sheds some light and gives some interesting perspectives on the issue of the personal context of PPPs and social capital. Also, the text describes the path of developing PPPs in Poland and especially the touristic projects. The research part presents the original case study comparative analysis based on table-oriented form and as such enables the new way of contextual analysis.

Purpose: This research delves into the nuanced interrelations between economic globalisation, European integration, and labour market dynamics, specifically focussing on understanding how trade and financial globalisation impact economic growth and the stability of the European Union (EU) labour markets. The aim is to emphasise the multidimensional effects of globalisation and European integration within this context.
Need for study: This research responds to the critical need for an in-depth analysis of these dynamics of globalisation, providing essential insights for informed economic and policy decision-making at the level of the EU in a globalised landscape.
Methodology: This research employs a systematic review and bibliometric analysis to examine a broad range of literature from 1990 to 2023. Analysing over 1,000 academic articles to identify trends in discussions on European integration and globalisation using the VOSviewer tool assesses the relationship between globalisation, European integration, and labour market performance in EU countries using statistical data provided by Eurostat.
Findings: European integration and globalisation continue to open avenues for economic growth while concurrently exposing economies to various risks, including economic instability and wage disparities. Financial globalisation emerges as a dual-edged credential, amplifying global financial risks and influencing income redistribution patterns.
Practical implications: The study emphasises the need for well-crafted policies to address labour market challenges in EU-13 countries. Policymakers should prioritise investment in education, skills training, entrepreneurship, innovation ecosystems, and workforce adaptability. Regional cooperation is also advised to leverage collective strengths, share best practices, and foster solidarity among EU-13 member states.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the role of spirituality, understood as a personal relationship with God, in missionary intercultural experience.
Design/methodology/approach
We conducted narrative interviews with eight Polish consecrated missionaries in Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru and Paraguay. We used thematic analysis to establish spirituality in missionary experience and narrative analysis to examine sensemaking processes.
Findings
Missionary spirituality was defined by a personal relationship with God as a source of consolation, psychological comfort, strength to cope with distressing experiences, and Grace promoting self-improvement. It compensated for the lack of family and psychological support and enhanced psychological adjustment to the environment perceived as dangerous. Spirituality helped missionaries deal with cultural challenges, traumatic and life-threatening events. Traumatic experiences furthered their understanding of the mission and triggered a spiritual transition that entailed a change in their life, attitudes and behavior.
Research limitations/implications
Comparative research into religious vs nonreligious individual spirituality in the experience across various types of expats in various locations could capture the professional and cultural specificity of individual spirituality. Research is also needed to link spirituality with expat failure.
Practical implications
Catholic agencies and institutions that dispatch missionaries to dangerous locations should consider providing professional psychological assistance. Narrative interviewing could be used to enhance missionaries' cultural and professional self-awareness, to better serve the local community. Their stories of intercultural encounters could be incorporated into cross-cultural training and the ethical and spiritual formation of students and future expats.
Originality/value
This study captures a spiritual aspect of intercultural experience of under-researched expats. It offers a model of the involvement of individual spirituality in coping in mission.

Abstract
Purpose
Despite global advancements, the Indian construction industry lags in adopting technologies like robots, artificial intelligence, drones, unmanned ground vehicles and Internet of Things sensors due to various barriers. This reliance on traditional practices leads to persistent issues such as labour shortages, low productivity, safety risks, cost overruns and delays. Identifying and addressing these barriers is crucial for adopting advanced technologies. Hence, this study aims to identify and assess the influential barriers to construction automation and robotics (AaR) in India using a systematic approach.
Design/methodology/approach
An extensive literature review identified key barriers, including technological, financial, regulatory, environmental and organisational. A questionnaire survey was conducted among industry professionals, and the Fuzzy Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory technique was used to evaluate the interrelationships and relative significance of these barriers.
Findings
The results of the study reveal the most critical cause barriers as “high initial cost”, “rigidity in organisational processes and procedures”, “interoperability”, “lack of competency” and “lack of standardisation”. These barriers subsequently influence the top two effect barriers such as “market uncertainty” and “ethical concerns”.
Practical implications
This research offers a systematic and quantitative assessment, enabling stakeholders to make informed decisions and develop strategies to overcome barriers to AaR adoption, unlocking the transformative potential of AaR in India’s construction sector.
Originality/value
Despite potential benefits, the adoption of AaR in Indian construction remains limited due to various barriers. This study provides novel insights with the first comprehensive assessment of these barriers and their interrelationships.

The wake of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic had caused substantial disruptions to the usual delivery of healthcare services. This is because of restrictive orders that were put in place to curb the spread of the infection. Palliative care services in Brunei also face challenges to deliver effective services during this period. However, the impact of advanced illnesses on patients' health and end-of-life care are issues that cannot be planned, postponed or cancelled. Hence, the palliative care team needs to continue to deliver effective palliative care services. As Brunei faced its second pandemic wave in August 2021, crucial adaptations were made to ensure palliative care service was not disrupted. This reflective case study aims to discuss the adaptations made in providing palliative care during this era of disruptions.
