Abstract
Unprecedented changes sweeping the world during the last few years have given rise to the need for the development and adoption of contingency strategies. This requires firms to have strategic flexibility in every aspect of their operation. Vendor development strategies constitute an important component in achieving this flexibility. Attempts to draw up an explicit conceptual link between generic business unit strategies and generic vendor development strategies. Proposes a vendor structure framework with three dimensions representing vendor structure scope, vendor structure relationship and vendor structure focus. Uses the framework to develop certain generic vendor development strategies. Considers the four generic strategies suggested by Porter, namely industry‐wide cost leadership strategy, industry‐wide differentiation strategy, segment cost leadership strategy and segment differentiation strategy and, for each one of these, proposes appropriate vendor development strategies.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to look at the role of the top and middle management of the Philips organization during the transition from one type of organizational change to another in the 1990s and the role the history of the organisation played in this process.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper analysis is based on historical records, literature and interviews with former Philips top managers.
Findings
The paper shows that Philips' leaders used different styles of leadership to create a deliberate atmosphere and willingness to change. The final emergent transformation, however, could only sufficiently materialise while it rejuvenated existing management concepts like Quality Management. The success was partly based on the fact that these concepts played a historical role in the Philips organisation.
Originality/value
The paper adds the historical style approach to leadership research and pays attention to the important role of the organization's history during processes of organizational change.

Abstract
Describes a variety of coding, reading, processing and optical techniques available for non‐standard identification problems associated with the marking and reading of products. Techniques covered are vision processing systems to enhance the application of barcodes, optical character reading, and the use of dotcodes. Outlines the advantages of dotcodes and concludes that the combination of a tv‐camera, balanced illumination and an intelligent vision processor allows creative solutions for identification, product recognition, quality control, measuring and positioning.

Abstract
Purpose
Sometimes consumers express their enthusiasm for a brand by creating brand extensions, products or services in new categories that are closely affiliated with the “parent” brand. This paper aims to examine the positive or negative impact that consumer-generated brand extensions (CGBEs) can have on brand image and revenue, and the options that companies have available to deal with them.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper presents a case study of the collectible strategy card game – Magic: The Gathering – and discusses how the company responded to five different brand extensions that were created by players. This case study was used to develop a framework that allows managers to evaluate CGBEs based on their benefits and risks and to select an appropriate response.
Findings
Four possible responses were identified: challenge, criticize, commend and catalyze. Which of these responses is appropriate for companies depends on whether the CGBE has a positive or negative impact on the brand image and revenue and whether this impact is large enough to merit an active response.
Originality/value
This study shows that it is essential for managers to understand how to evaluate CGBEs. Managed properly, they can improve product usage, help generate new customers and have a positive impact on revenue and brand image. However, CGBEs can also have a negative effect, in particular if they are substitutes for the original product.

This paper seeks to describe automated lamp manufacturing.
Abstract
Purpose
This paper seeks to describe automated lamp manufacturing.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper provides information on the automated manufacture of incandescent, fluorescent and light‐emitting diodes (LEDs).
Findings
The paper finds that the automated manufacture of conventional lamp types is similar, but LEDs require totally different techniques developed from the semiconductor industry.
Originality/value
The paper should be of value in terms of understanding the basics of automated lamp manufacturing, especially with LEDs, as these will be highly important general lighting products to save energy and provide innovation in lighting design in the near future.

Abstract
The first videodisc was demonstrated in 1927. A brief history of the videodisc is presented, describing the three major current manifestations of this storage medium—read‐only, write‐once, and erasable. Read‐only became an important information delivery format in 1985. During 1986, write‐once will begin to have impact on libraries and information centers. The current status of this technology, the major corporations involved in the field, and the potential uses for various types of storage media are described. A sidebar discusses Geac's use of optical media.

Abstract
Researchers continue to seek understanding of industrialization as a state managed process. How to create and implement new industries based on advanced knowledge is on the policy agenda of many advanced nations. Measures that promote these developments include national capacity building in science and technology, the formation of technology transfer systems, and the establishment of industrial clusters. What these templates often overlook is an analysis of use. This chapter aims to increase the understanding of the processes that embed new solutions in structures from an industrial network perspective. The chapter describes an empirical study of high-technology industrialization in Taiwan that the researcher conducts to this end. The study shows that the Taiwanese industrial model is oversimplified and omits several important factors in the development of new industries. This study bases its findings on the notions that resource combination occurs in different time and space, the new always builds on existing resource structures, and the users are important as active participants in development processes.
