Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review and map the landscape of luxury wine consumption in multidisciplinary literature. It highlights the key themes of analysis, consumer markets and common behaviours of luxury wine consumption.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper analyses 85 articles on luxury wine consumption using Leximancer and content analysis.

Findings

Six main topics in the extant literature are identified as follows: product perception, wine price, wine information, consumption behaviour, group and China market. Our study revealed the shift in luxury consumption towards affordability, availability, middle-class, younger consumers and predominantly Asian markets.

Research limitations/implications

As a follow-up to this research, empirical research on luxury wine consumption is needed to establish more precise definitions of terms.

Social implications

Wine as a product is susceptible to social changes and preferences, positioning it between old and common luxury.

Originality/value

This research offers theoretical insights into research on luxury wine, including how the literature reflects recent societal changes. It also provides a roadmap for future research in this field.

Abstract

Purpose

Crisis management has developed as an established field of scholarly research in tourism over the last three decades. More recently, the concept of resilience has emerged within this body of literature as a longer-term planning process. However, important knowledge gaps remain, especially with regards to the strategic responses of small tourism businesses in destinations prone to repeated crises.

Design/methodology/approach

This chapter reviews the literature related to crisis management and resilience in tourism.

Findings

Key knowledge gaps are outlined and discussed in the context of tourism research related to crisis management and resilience, with a specific emphasis on research related to small tourism businesses.

Originality

Although crisis management and resilience are fields of research that continue to generate a considerable amount of scholarly enquiry in tourism, particularly with studies related to the impacts of terrorism on tourism destinations and, more recently, the short- and longer-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism, there is very little research related to the role of small tourism businesses in this context, in spite of their key role in the tourism system of destinations around the world.

Abstract

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has caused a humanitarian crisis that will be followed by an economic crisis. Tourism is one of the most affected sectors of the economy. Forecasts are devastating. Many local communities lost an important source of income and employees lost their jobs. In Slovenia, where tourism represents approximately 10% of GDP, the Government, consulting with experts and scientists, introduced staycation vouchers. Each resident received a voucher worth €200, while children up to 18 years old received one worth €50. Through this scheme, the Government was subsidising residents to go on vacation with €350 million. The initial results are positive – in the first seven weeks, approximately 15% of staycation vouchers were used. Industry representatives are optimistic and the tourism industry may end up with a 40% drop in total revenue instead of the forecasted 70% for the year 2020. The pandemic has had some positive outcomes, since holidays in Slovenia this year were available to all.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide an understanding of residents' perceptions of how tourism activity in a rural area impacts their environment as well as their economic and social lives individually and as a community.

Design/methodology/approach

As a primary method of data collection, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 residents in the rural areas of Cyprus.

Findings

The study's findings suggest that tourism activity in the rural areas provides a plethora of opportunities to residents, but comes with challenges and threats. Both social and environmental impacts are mainly for the benefit of the local communities as the engine of development. Emphasis is given to the revival of the local culture with the emergence of small and medium enterprises, along with the motivation of younger populations and women to become active entrepreneurs. However, a more holistic approach should be taken to sustainable tourism development in Cyprus, ensuring that all local communities have an opportunity to develop small-scale niche tourism products that enhance the image of rural destinations and which become a source of pride for the residents.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the literature by enhancing knowledge of the relationship between tourism and local rural communities. Shedding light on residents' perceptions by evaluating social and environmental impacts can guide government policy making and implementation.
