Abstract

Purpose

In the field of planetary exploration, the legged-type lander is a common landing buffer device. There are two important performance metrics for legged-type landers: the energy absorption capacity and landing stability. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to optimize the honeycomb buffer of a legged-type lander. Optimization design variables are the dimension parameters of honeycomb and the objective functions are the evaluation parameters of the above two performance metrics.

Design/methodology/approach

A multi-body dynamic model of a lander and a finite-element model of the metal honeycomb are established. Based on the simulation results of the finite-element model and the quartic polynomial, the surrogate models are established to evaluate the energy absorption capacity of honeycomb. Considering both the multi-body dynamic model and the surrogate models, the study designed the optimization flow of dimension parameters of honeycomb. Besides, the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II is used for iterative calculation.

Findings

Images of surrogate models show the monotonous functional relationship between the honeycomb’s energy absorption characteristics and its dimension parameters. Optimization results show an apparent contradiction among the objective functions. Besides, according to the simulation results, this method can significantly improve the comprehensive performance of the lander.

Originality/value

The novel method can effectively reduce the cost of honeycomb compression tests and improve the lander’s design. Therefore, it can be used for optimizing buffers of other types of legged-type landers.

Abstract

Purpose

The relationship between sex and tourism remains ambiguous in the tourism literature. Few studies have examined the underlying motivations behind sex-driven travel, and little is known about factors inhibiting tourists' procurement of commercial sex when traveling. Therefore, this study explored male Chinese tourists' perceived constraints during decision-making and developed a comprehensive scale to assess constraints to commercial sex consumption overseas.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were obtained from male Chinese tourists purchasing commercial sex while traveling overseas. This study involved a four-stage process as recommended by Churchill (1979) for scale development research. In Stage 1, preliminary items were generated through a comprehensive review of the constraints literature and in-depth interviews with 16 sex tourists, which generated an initial 26 items. During the second stage to purify the measurement items, six items were eliminated, resulting in 20 items. Stage 3 involved exploratory factor analysis (N = 275) to extract the scale's underlying factor structure. Results revealed a five-factor structure with sufficient evidence of internal reliability given Cronbach's alpha coefficients between 0.722 and 0.843. The final stage included confirmatory factor analysis (N = 259) to verify the scale's reliability and validity.

Findings

Ultimately, 20 items were developed to measure sex tourists' perceived constraints toward engaging in commercial sex services overseas based on five factors: structural constraints, intrapersonal constraints, interpersonal constraints, value conflicts and service supply–related constraints.

Originality/value

This study advances the scope of sex tourism research by verifying how these five constraints are independent, generalized and can influence the procurement of sexual services overseas. This study is the first in sex tourism research to explore the difficulties facing sex tourists. Results offer marketers important insight on how to better address these constraints while providing a safe and legal sex tourism experience.

Abstract

Purpose

Although research on how the downstream calculations of a patent’s profit potential influence invention renewal decisions is extensive, the impact of the upstream knowledge creation stages is overlooked. The purpose of this study is to address this theoretical vacuum by examining the intra-organizational configuration of knowledge networks and collaboration networks.

Design/methodology/approach

The data consist of 491 global pharmaceutical firms that patent in the USA. Drawing on patent records, the authors simultaneously construct intra-organizational knowledge networks and collaboration networks and identify network cohesion features (i.e. local and global). The authors employ panel fixed-effects models to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The results show that local knowledge cohesion and local social cohesion decrease invention renewals, while global knowledge cohesion and global social cohesion increase renewals. Moreover, the marginal effects of local and global social cohesion are stronger than those of local and global knowledge cohesion, respectively.

Research limitations/implications

The hypotheses are tested using the pharmaceutical industry as a research setting, which limits the generalizability of our findings. In addition, potential formal and informal contingencies are not considered.

Practical implications

Despite its limitations, this study provides valuable implications. First, managers are cautioned against the adverse effects of local cohesion structures on invention renewal. Second, firms can dynamically adjust their local and global network configuration strategies to harmonize the generation of valuable inventions and the retention of good ideas.

Originality/value

Complementary to previous research that focused on inventions’ performance feedback, this study delves into upstream knowledge creation stages to understand invention renewals.

Abstract

Purpose

Driven by sustainable production, mobile robots are introduced as a new clean-energy material handling tool for mixed-model assembly lines (MMALs), which reduces energy consumption and lineside inventory of workstations (LSI). Nevertheless, the previous part feeding scheduling method was designed for conventional material handling tools without considering the flexible spatial layout of the robotic mobile fulfillment system (RMFS). To fill this gap, this paper focuses on a greening mobile robot part feeding scheduling problem with Just-In-Time (JIT) considerations, where the layout and number of pods can be adjusted.

Design/methodology/approach

A novel hybrid-load pod (HL-pod) and mobile robot are proposed to carry out part feeding tasks between material supermarkets and assembly lines. A bi-objective mixed-integer programming model is formulated to minimize both total energy consumption and LSI, aligning with environmental and sustainable JIT goals. Due to the NP-hard nature of the proposed problem, a chaotic differential evolution algorithm for multi-objective optimization based on iterated local search (CDEMIL) algorithm is presented. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by dealing with the HL-pod-based greening part feeding scheduling problem in different problem scales and compared to two benchmark algorithms. Managerial insights analyses are conducted to implement the HL-pod strategy.

Findings

The CDEMIL algorithm's ability to produce Pareto fronts for different problem scales confirms its effectiveness and feasibility. Computational results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the other two compared algorithms regarding solution quality and convergence speed. Additionally, the results indicate that the HL-pod performs better than adopting a single type of pod.

Originality/value

This study proposes an innovative solution to the scheduling problem for efficient JIT part feeding using RMFS and HL-pods in automobile MMALs. It considers both the layout and number of pods, ensuring a sustainable and environmental-friendly approach to production.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the effect of the reference quality on the optimal production strategy of a component manufacturer (CM), which mainly concerns whether to sell its high quality self-branded products and whether to supply critical components to a competitive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) who produces low quality products.

Design/methodology/approach

The study considers a supply chain comprising an OEM, a CM and a third-party component manufacturer (TCM), who produces components with uncertain quality. The OEM selects a supplier between the CM and the TCM to produce products. Anticipating the OEM’s supplier selection, the CM chooses among three alternative production strategies. For each alternative strategy of the CM, the authors derive the equilibrium solutions between the OEM and the CM with or without the reference quality effect. Then, the authors obtain the effect of the reference quality on the CM by comparing the CM’s optimal strategy between the two situations.

Findings

First, the reference quality has opposite effects on the CM’s production strategy depending on the competition results. A high reference quality effect motivates the CM to solely sell the self-branded products if the OEM can always enter the final product market when purchasing from the TCM, and to sell both self-branded products and components if the OEM cannot enter the market when using the TCM’s low quality components. Second, the reference quality effect motivates the OEM to accept a higher wholesale price from the CM. Third, the reference quality effect can make the CM benefit from a more stable TCM in competition.

Originality/value

This paper first considers the impact of the reference quality effect on the CM’s production strategy. By considering consumers’ behavior in a co-opetitive supply chain, this paper contributes to both literature and practice.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the increasing number of tourists exposed to commercially available cannabis, it is important to understand visitors' perceived constraints to cannabis consumption while travelling. This study aims to compare cannabis tourists' perceived constraints between first-time and repeat tourists to gain comprehensive understanding.

Design/methodology/approach

This study involved 32 conversational field interviews (5–10 min) with Chinese tourists who had smoked cannabis in coffee shops in Amsterdam to identify perceived constraints to engaging in cannabis tourism. The hierarchical constraint model (HCM) informed qualitative data coding using a deductive approach to compare first-time and repeat tourists. Content analysis was conducted manually.

Findings

Results showed that both tourist groups faced intrapersonal, interpersonal and structural perceived constraints to cannabis consumption. Differences in first-time and repeat cannabis tourists' perceived constraints were explained using the neutralization technique framework and psychological tactics, such as the defence of necessity, claims of entitlement, normal practice and claims of relative acceptability. In addition, social exchange theory was employed to explain why repeat cannabis tourists perceived fewer constraints than first-time tourists.

Practical implications

Although the current study did not intend to address the importance of cannabis tourism in places where cannabis is commercially available, findings offer empirical guidance for industry practitioners and policymakers regarding cannabis use education, prevention and policy in tourism contexts; related efforts can promote the sustainable development of this tourism market while protecting cannabis tourists' physical and psychological well-being.

Originality/value

This study makes important theoretical contributions regarding travel constraints in the unique context of cannabis tourism between first-time and repeat tourists. Findings will also enable academics, industry operators, policymakers and local residents of cannabis tourism destinations to better understand how these tourists decide whether to consume cannabis overseas. Differences in these perceived constraints between first-time and repeat tourists are discussed to highlight the dynamic nature of travel constraints.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to analyzes how megaproject top managers engaged in stewardship behaviors. Studying megaprojects from the micro-foundations rooted in individual action and interaction, this research examines the gaps between literature and top managers' positive behavior to challenge the current theoretical underpinnings of megaproject governance research and practice.

Design/methodology/approach

An extensive literature review was performed in the initial phase. Then, a case study of South-to-North Water Diversion project was conducted based on following this project and on access to its top executives. Data was collected from multiple sources and analyzed by Nvivo (version 12). Further analysis was then carried out in two stages to identify megaproject stewardship behavior and related governance patterns.

Findings

Results show that stewardship behavior is prevalently existing and is possibly to be identified through psychological, situational, relational dimensions. Also, 16 factors have been found to describe the precise nature of megaproject stewardship behavior. Further explorative findings were discussed from three perspectives: possible theoretical development, self-actualization motivation and temporalities of megaprojects.

Originality/value

Building upon the ideas on how to extend steward theory towards project field, this research conducts a first exploration of stewardship behavior in megaprojects. This study contributes to complement the research into top-level organizational behavior in megaprojects, and it provides helpful implications for how to govern top managers in the following megaprojects with the cooperative spirit that can be valued by megaproject stakeholders.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to investigate effectiveness of the strengthening method, the construction process monitoring, fielding-load tests before and after strengthening, and health monitoring after reinforcement were carried out. The results of concrete strain and deflection show that the flexural strength and stiffness of the strengthened beam are improved.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper describes prestressed steel strand as a way to strengthen a 25-year-old continuous rigid frame bridge. High strength, low relaxation steel strand with high tensile strain and good corrosion resistance were used in this reinforcement. The construction process for strengthening with prestressed steel strand and steel plate was described. Ultimate bearing capacity of the bridge after strengthening was discussed based on finite element model.

Findings

The cumulative upward deflection of the second span the third span was 39.7 mm, which is basically consistent with the theoretical value, and the measured value is smaller than the theoretical value. The deflection value of the second span during data acquisition was −20 mm–10 mm, which does not exceed the maximum deflection value of live load, and the deflection of the bridge is in a safe state during normal use. Thus, this strengthened way with prestressed steel wire rope is feasible and effective.

Originality/value

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to evaluate Artificial Intelligence (AI) research in the hospitality industry based on the service AI framework (mechanical-thinking-feeling) and highlight prospective avenues for future inquiry in this growing domain.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper conceptualizes timely concepts supported by research spanning multiple domains.

Findings

This research introduces a novel classification for the domain of AI hospitality research. This classification encompasses prediction and pattern recognition, computer vision, NLP, behavioral research, and synthetic data generation. Based on this classification, this study identifies and elaborates upon five emerging research topics, each linked to a corresponding set of research questions. These focal points encompass the realms of interpretable AI, controllable AI, AI ethics, collaborative AI, and synthetic data generation.

Originality/value

This viewpoint provides a foundational framework and a directional compass for future research in AI within the hospitality industry. It pushes the industry forward with a balanced approach to leveraging AI to augment human potential and enrich customer experiences. Both the classification and the research agenda would contribute to the body of knowledge that will guide the industry toward a future where technology and human service coalesce to create unparalleled value for all stakeholders.
