This study sought to investigate the attitudes of Vietnamese undergraduate business students towards English-Medium Instruction (EMI) courses.

Abstract

Purpose

This study sought to investigate the attitudes of Vietnamese undergraduate business students towards English-Medium Instruction (EMI) courses.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected through purposive sampling using structured questionnaires, resulting in a dataset comprising 291 responses. This study employs a combination of Importance–Performance Analysis (IPA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) to evaluate students' perceptions of effectiveness of EMI courses, their satisfaction and loyalty.

Findings

The study’s findings revealed a noteworthy pattern: students assigned higher levels of importance to various aspects of EMI courses than the actual performance levels of these elements. Additionally, the analysis identified specific attributes that fell into different IPA quadrants, shedding light on their relative significance. Notably, the students placed their teachers' professional expertise and English proficiency in the “keep up the good work” quadrant, indicating the strengths of these attributes. In contrast, learning assessment techniques, course learning materials and electronic teaching platforms were situated in the “concentrate here” quadrant, implying room for improvement in these areas. Furthermore, it was observed that attributes falling within the “keep up the good work” quadrant had a positive effect on students' overall satisfaction and loyalty, while other characteristics did not significantly contribute to predicting these outcomes.

Originality/value

Based on these findings, the study offers recommendations for educational institutions and educators concerning the planning and implementation of EMI courses.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on integrating social exchange theory and input-mediator-output-input model, the current study proposes a model to explore the relationship between benevolent leadership and creative work behavior of Vietnamese university staffs.

Design/methodology/approach

A printed questionnaire was developed and directly distributed to 503 Vietnamese university staffs from 1st to 27th October in 2023 using the quota sampling method. After removing 61 missing data and outlier cases, a total of 442 valuable cases were used for further investigation. SPSS 22 and SMARTPLS version 3.2.2 was employed for data analysis.

Findings

Our study found the positive relationship between benevolent leadership and creative work behavior through the mediation of innovative climate and fear of failure. The findings also indicated that benevolent leadership fosters an innovative climate and reduces subordinates’ fear of failure, then increases subordinates’ creative work behavior.

Originality/value

The present study explored mechanisms of benevolent leadership effect on creative work behavior of university staff. From that, contributing several practical implications for university leaders and educators in fostering university staff’s creative work behavior. This research contributed to the knowledge domain of leadership and creative work behavior of employees in higher education.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the technology acceptance model (TAM) and perceived risk theory (PRT), this study proposes a new model for exploring factors affecting citizens' intentions to use e-government in the Vietnamese context during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

The current study takes the form of a case study of the Vietnam context and employs a quantitative method. An Internet-based survey was conducted in Vietnam and was completed by 441 respondents. Hypotheses were tested using a two-stage structural equation model. SPSS 22 and AMOS 20 software were used for primary data analysis.

Findings

The findings reveal that factors of TAM are still valuable in predicting citizens' intentions to use e-government services during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the factor of PRT, namely, perceived risk of COVID-19 pandemic, also affects citizens' intentions to use e-government services. Attitudes toward e-government play a mediating role in the relationships between perceived usefulness, perceived risk and citizens' intentions to use e-government. Examining the predictive power of TAM and PRT factors, it can be seen that TAM factors have a higher total effect on citizens' intentions to use e-government, compared to PRT factor.

Originality/value

The present study demonstrates a new model for exploring factors affecting citizens' intentions to use e-government during the COVID-19 era. It explored the effectiveness of combining TAM and PRT as well as the predictive power of each factors in an integrated model aimed at predicting citizens' intentions in the emergency context like COVID-19. This study helps us improve our understanding of e-government usage and would be of particular interest to policymakers and service providers of e-system.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims at identifying perceived factors and measuring opinions about the factors' impact on academic staff development (ASD) at Tay Nguyen University (TNU), Dak Lak, Vietnam.

Design/methodology/approach

The research used the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) method, the multiple regression model (ordinary least squares (OLS)) and a five-point Likert scale questionnaire. A sample of 70 managerial staff, 374 lecturers and 512 students of TNU was surveyed to obtain data.

Findings

The EFA showed that opinions concerning university autonomy (UA) and university social responsibility (USR) were positively correlated. With the above two factors united as responsible autonomy (RA), the OLS indicated perceptions that RA and internal driving factor (IF) had significant and positive impacts on the ASD, while external driving factor (EF) was found to have a perceived negative influence on ASD.

Research limitations/implications

The results indicated that there appears to be a close relationship between UA and USR, and these can be considered as a factor that has apparent impacts on the ASD of the university.

Practical implications

The degree of UA and USR of TNU should be enhanced through awareness of the university's academic staff, the application of a suitable evaluation system and the efficiency of university's regulations. In addition, efforts should be made to improve internal factors such as the dissemination of educational philosophy, the suitability of strategic plans, the development of key performance indicators KPIs and the building of organizational culture – all of which will help to heighten the university’s ASD. At the same time, TNU should endeavor to quickly transform aspects of administration and management to meet the shifting requirements of the autonomous environment and competitive features of the market economy. In particular, there is a need for the academic staff themselves to have increased capacity to adapt to these changes.

Social implications

The authors' results have a broader application to not only the case of TNU but to other situations in developing countries where universities are in transitional stages as governments assign increasing autonomy and responsibility to them.

Originality/value

This paper suggests that the academic staff of TNU should be provided with both professional autonomy and adaptive capacity to foster research and educational innovation in the market-based higher education system of Vietnam. More generally, if true, the paper suggests that an increase in the degree of UA and USR should be combined with the efforts to improve the internal environments such as disseminating educational philosophy, mission, vision and strategies and building organizational culture.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the moderating role of e-trustmarks in the relationship between electronic word of mouth (eWoM), security, quality of information, and purchase behaviour of consumers on B2C e-commerce websites. The research was conducted in the context of emerging countries.

Design/methodology/approach

The research utilised partial least squares path modelling (PLS-SEM) to assess the model and its hypothesised relationships, drawing on data from a survey of 1993 consumers engaged in e-commerce websites with e-trustmarks. The study incorporated SOR theory, asymmetric information theory, and signalling theory.

Findings

E-trustmarks moderate the positive impact of eWoM, security, and quality of information on online trust. A moderating effect of e-trustmarks was also found, such that the positive association between purchase intention and purchase behaviour was stronger when e-trustmarks were higher.

Research limitations/implications

This study was conducted solely in Vietnam and focused only on a set of input variables without addressing specific industries or market segments. The research did not use demographic data, such as the age and income of the surveyors, to identify variations in the impact of variables on different target groups, indicating potential areas for future research.

Practical implications

Emerging countries should implement targeted policies regarding e-trustmarks and encourage businesses to adopt them to reduce information asymmetry in the online environment.

Originality/value

This study contributes to asymmetric theory and signalling theory by offering critical insights into how online businesses can make use of influence mechanisms in the model to ease asymmetric information. Integrating signalling theory and moderating e-trustmarks into the SOR model advances research on consumer behaviour in emerging countries’ e-commerce markets with asymmetric information.

Abstract

“The world needs science, science needs women” is the message given by UNESCO in the program for the development of women in science” (UNESCO, 2017). In Vietnam, women’s participation and achievements in scientific research is considered a great and important resource for industrialization and modernization. Even so, are there gender differences in scientific achievement in the social science research institutes in Vietnam? What factors influence the scientific achievement of female social researchers? The answers will be based on data from a 2017 survey with a sample of 756 researchers, of which 77.6% were female. The survey was conducted by the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, a leading, ministry-level national center for the social sciences in Vietnam. This chapter analyzed the scientific achievements of researchers through their position as principal investigators of research projects and their publications, and factors that may impact this. Bivariate and multivariate analyses of factors that may affect the scientific achievement of researchers found that gender differences in academic achievement in the social sciences in Vietnam was still prevalent. Female researchers’ scientific achievements were lower than those of their male counterparts. The contribution to science of Vietnamese female researchers was limited by many different factors; the most important were the academic rank of the researchers and gender stereotype that considered housework the responsibility of women.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the conditional indirect effect of academic self-efficacy in the interplay between academic motivation and academic satisfaction through academic engagement among university students.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional study was performed on 1,638 Vietnamese university students (31.9% males and 68.1% females) aged 16 to 36 (Mean = 20.06, SD = 1.428). The participants filled out a questionnaire with the Vietnam versions of the General Self-Efficacy Scale, Academic Motivation Scale, Academic Life Satisfaction Scale and Academic Engagement Scale. Model 4 and Model 7 in the PROCESS macro were used for the mediation analysis and the moderated mediation analysis.

Findings

Results showed that the indirect effect of academic engagement on the academic motivation-academic satisfaction link was significant. Furthermore, academic self-efficacy moderated this indirect effect. The indirect effect was stronger among students with high academic self-efficacy and weaker among students with low academic self-efficacy.

Originality/value

This study’s findings contribute to educational research on academic satisfaction and can be used by institutions of higher education and educators to enhance academic satisfaction among university students.

Abstract

Purpose

Online self-disclosure and online social support have important effects on well-being. The purpose of this study was to examine the indirect effect of online social support through social networking sites (SNSs) in the link between online self-disclosure through SNSs and well-being among Vietnamese adolescents.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a convenience sample of 980 Vietnamese adolescents (332 men, 648 women) and three scales (the Subjective Happiness Scale, the Self-Disclosure Scale and the Two-Way Social Support Scale), this study investigated whether online self-disclosure has a direct and indirect effects on well-being when mediated by online social support.

Findings

Mediation analysis showed that online social support partially mediated the link between online self-disclosure and well-being among Vietnamese adolescents, β = 0.008, standard error = 0.004, confidence interval = [0.001, 0.017].

Originality/value

This study provides an important practical basis for developing interventions to improve the well-being of adolescents who use SNSs. This finding indicated that adolescents’ well-being can be enhanced through online self-disclosure and online social support.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aimed to investigate whether optimism buffers an indirect relationship between COVID stress and depressive symptoms via poor sleep quality among Vietnamese high school students.

Design/methodology/approach

Six hundred and eighty-five participants completed the Coronavirus Stress Measure, the Life Orientation Test-Revised, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales. Process Macro 3.5 for SPSS (Model 4 and Model 14) was used to analyze the mediating effect and moderated mediation effect.

Findings

The results indicated that COVID stress was associated with an increase in depressive symptoms via the indirect pathway of poor sleep quality. Furthermore, optimism moderated the indirect relationship between COVID stress and depressive symptoms through poor sleep quality among Vietnamese students.

Originality/value

The study's findings may serve as a basis for the development of depression prevention interventions for students with high COVID stress in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Vietnam is firmly committed to attaining the Sustainable Development Goals articulated in the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Goal 4 concerns quality education, and target 4.3 refers to ensuring access by all men and women to quality and affordable technical, vocational and tertiary education, including university education. In 2017, the Prime Minister issued a directive that included five actions to be taken by Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training to achieve target 4.3 in the context of the higher education sector. This chapter provides an opportunity to review some challenges the Ministry faces in implementing the five actions specified.
