Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to encourage other libraries to establish links in Google Earth and Google Maps linking back to their original content.
Design/methodology/approach
In the quest of the library at Quinnipiac University, USA, to develop a working Keyhole Markup Language (KML) template, they used tutorials from Google, forums for KML developers, and the Google Earth Community.
Findings
This project demonstrated that well‐designed KML files can have a verifiable impact on the usage of original content, serving as an advertising medium and an additional access point to their content.
Practical implications
Librarians can use these techniques to provide access to their material using a service that has proven extremely popular with users.
Originality/value
The paper provides information on free tools for libraries to enhance the discovery and access to their collections.

Abstract
Has this problem happened to someone you know? A SaveScreen file compiled on Monday wasn't erased. All of Tuesday's work was added to the existing file and the problem wasn't discovered until the file was printing or downloading into the Cataloging Micro Enhancer software. The result? A pile of unwanted printouts, or ME records that must be deleted one at a time (If you notice the problem early enough, you might elect to delete the entire file and try again.)

Considers the solutions to the problems caused by the installation of a new M310 Workstation. Describes the creation of “OLD”, a series of batch files allowing the user to save edited CAT ME records for later reuse. Surmises that other variations are available, depending on needs.

Abstract
Typographical errors exist in bibliographic and authority records and can hinder patron access to library materials. Until recently, a widely available systematic approach to finding typographical errors in authority records did not exist. OCLC Connexion provides a keyword search capability of the Library of Congress Authority File, allowing librarians to find and report typographical errors in authority records. With some modifications, a list of common typographical errors in bibliographic records can be used to create a similar list for authority records. This effort will contribute to reducing the number of typographical errors in authority records.

Abstract
Purpose
In response to budgetary concerns and feedback from users, the New York Law School's Mendik Library needed to streamline the way it reported current law journal table of contents (TOC) information to its users. As part of this streamlining process, the librarians discovered that most of the journals they provided in paper had web pages that provided full access to all articles in their current issues. The librarians responded to this opportunity by building web pages that provided links to these journals and noted when a new issue had just appeared. The purpose of this paper is to assess the status of current awareness information in the field of legal journals and uncover the options for best using them.
Design/methodology/approach
The library worked from a list of journals that they purchased through paper subscriptions. They determined the web page location of each and then checked whether the journal provided TOC data only, full text through internet protocol recognition or open full text for at least the current issue.
Findings
More than 60 percent of the law journals that Mendik purchased had online TOC available with full, free access to the content.
Originality/value
Librarians can begin to explore replacing TOC reporting with virtual journal shelves that contain full content to the articles.

Abstract
The ability to conduct unobtrusive observation of user searching is a potential strength of the method of information retrieval system analysis known as transaction log analysis (TLA). Transaction logs supply unequivocal information about what a user typed while searching. All other methods rely on self‐reporting, which, as Nielsen points out, is not always corroborated by the logs. Regardless of where in an institution information retrieval (IR) system evaluation takes place, TLA is a method that enables library staff at all levels to examine a variety of system and user‐related activities that are recorded on the log. Dominick suggested that TLA can enable the examination of three broad categories of activity: 1) system performance and resource utilization, 2) information retrieval performance, and 3) user interaction with the IR system. This article has been divided into several sections corresponding to functional areas in a library to suggest useful applications of TLA.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to show how the addition of a next‐generational overlay to an existing online catalog can lead to more‐refined searching by users. Users of classic online catalogs have always had the ability to refine their searches and define better the specific type of material they want. However, research in the last two decades has consistently shown that few users take advantage of this extra step. Now with the rise of discovery platforms like Encore and Aquabrowser, the limiting capabilities are automatically displayed to the user, and this study aims to demonstrate that this creates a significant change in search behaviors.
Design/methodology/approach
The library worked through months of its search logs for both the classic and online catalogs and compared data from the two platforms. Similar log data were obtained from other libraries to confirm that this was a universal trend.
Findings
The study shows that users are 15‐20 times more likely to refine their searches if they are searching in a discovery platform.
Originality/value
Librarians can base their bibliographic instruction sessions on a better understanding of the search behaviors likely in the two kinds of catalogs.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to encourage other libraries to provide access to their own original content via the web. By way of case study, the process of identifying materials, scanning them and creating web access to original content will be explored.
Design/methodology/approach
To implement a book digitization project, three major things need to be present. The library must own material that was published prior to 1923, making them safely out of copyright in the USA; the library needs access to server space on the web and the library needs to own scanning equipment.
Findings
This project demonstrated that a library does not necessarily need to obtain grant funding to begin an effective and successful digitization program. It also revealed a few things that would improve the process and enhance the return on investment.
Originality/value
A library meeting, the criteria will be able to enjoy the considerable benefits of a digitization project which include favourable attention from researchers when access to original content is provided, and a greater selection of source materials for their institutional community.
