Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a new immunization strategy for effectively solving the control of the spread of the virus.

Design/methodology/approach

Inspired by the idea of network partition, taking two optimization targets which are the scale of sub-network and the sum of the strengths of the sub-network's nodes into account at the same time, a new immunization strategy based on greedy algorithm in the scale-free network is presented. After specifying the number of nodes through the immunization, the network is divided into the scale of sub-network and the sum of the strength of the sub-network's nodes as small as possible.

Findings

The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has the better performance than targeted immunization which is supposed to be highly efficient at present.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a new immunization strategy based on greedy algorithm in the scale-free network for effectively solving the control of the spread of the virus.

Abstract

Purpose

Extensive efforts have been conducted on the elimination of position sensors in servomotor control. The purpose of this paper is to aim at estimating the servomotor speed without using position sensors and the knowledge of its parameters by artificial neural networks (ANNs).

Design/methodology/approach

A neural speed observer based on the Elman neural network (NN) structure takes only motor voltages and currents as inputs.

Findings

After offline NNs training, the observer is incorporated into a DSP-based drive and sensorless control is achieved.

Research limitations/implications

Future work will consider to reduce the computation time for NNs training and to adaptively tune parameters on line.

Practical implications

The experimental results of the proposed method are presented to show the effectiveness.

Originality/value

This paper achieves sensorless servomotor control by ANNs which are seldom studied.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to use vision stereo to simultaneously acquire image pairs under a normal environment. Then the methods of moving edges detection and moving target shifting are applied to reduce noise error in order to position a target efficiently. The target is then double confirmed via image merge and alignment. After positioning, the visual difference between the target and the image created by the stereo vision system is measured for alignment. Finally, the image depth of the target is calculated followed by real-time target tracking.

Design/methodology/approach

This study mainly applies Sobel image principle. In addition, moving edges detection and moving target shifting are also used to work with system multi-threading for improving image identification efficiency.

Findings

The results of the experiment suggest that real-time image tracking and positioning under a pre-set environment can be effectively improved. On the other hand, tracking and positioning are slightly affected under a normal environment. Errors of distance measurements occur because there is more noise existing.

Research limitations/implications

This study mainly determines the movements and positioning of an object or a target via image. However, the stability of moving edges detection executed by the stereo vision system can be affected if the light sources in an environment are too strong or extreme.

Practical implications

So far the method of tracking and positioning a moving object has been applied to surveillance systems or the application which requires measuring and positioning under a normal environment. The method proposed by this study can also be used to construct a 3D environment.

Originality/value

The method proposed by this study can also be used to construct a 3D environment or tracking moving object to measure the distance.

Abstract

Purpose

Recently, the acoustic characteristics of indoor spaces have been perceived to be more important due to the economic development needs of societies. At the same time, container houses have gradually become more widely used in many applications because of their sustainability and ease of use. In spite of their convenience, these container units still need to foster pleasant and quiet sound environments. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, commercial software, designed by Ecotect Analysis, has been used to evaluate the sound characteristics of container houses. As a result, the decorated materials in such a small indoor space have been redesigned for the acoustic comfort of users based on the optimal reverberation time (RT). First, a three-dimensional model of the container house was constructed using the software’s default tools. Then, the indoor acoustic characteristics of various design conditions were obtained from the simulation process undertaken.

Findings

By comparing the experimental and simulation results, excellent agreement was observed which verified the feasibility of the software. The original container house experienced an RT distribution of 140-315 ms. After selecting a suitable interior design material, its RT distribution was measured at 160-680 ms.

Originality/value

Following the design process described, spatial designers can assess the indoor acoustic characteristics at the concept design stage and ensure that a decent acoustic comfort environment is derived in their building designs. Meanwhile, such modifications should improve the quality of living for residents of container houses and construction cost reductions might be implemented.

Extensive efforts have been conducted on the improvement of torque ripple in switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive. The purpose of this paper is to estimate initial on time of pulse-width modulation (PWM) and turn-off angle using the motor speed and rotor angle by fuzzy logic.

Design/methodology/approach

A fuzzy logic control together with the PWM technique and turn-off angle are used to improve torque ripple and dynamic response.

Findings

After determining initial on time of PWM, the rise slope of phase current is increased.

Research limitations/implications

Future work will consider to increase the complex of the fuzzy control to adaptively tune parameters and achieve excellent results.

Practical implications

The experimental results of the proposed method are presented to show the effectiveness.

Originality/value

This paper achieves SRM control by one special PWM technique which is seldom studied.

Abstract

Purpose

In our contemporary living environment, most people want, not only to maintain privacy and security, but also to avoid losing the keys or passwords for their doors at home. Additionally, many would like to own a fast, convenient and cost-effective exclusive door lock controller to establish some peace of mind. For this paper, the author has designed a smart door lock device which has a non-contact pattern recognition controller to recognize a tiny pattern that can be displayed by mobile devices. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

The patterns recognized by the exclusively designed security device are created using a two-dimensional text and graphics method that can be stored by mobile devices. Therefore, when key-owners come near their doors’ control panels, the established two-dimensional text and graphics cyphers can be displayed for verification purposes on a mobile device’s screen. The author used the MT19937 (32 bit) virtual random number generator as the encryption technology.

Findings

The recognized pattern is built using a two-dimensional text and graphics method that can be stored by owners’ mobile devices. Therefore, when a key-owner comes near a door’s control panel, the established two-dimensional text and graphics cypher can be displayed.

Research limitations/implications

Use of either wireless or wired internet causes momentary delays to lock control signals.

Practical implications

Upon each occasion of a code verification, doors are opened and short message service (SMS) notifications are sent to the key-owners simultaneously. The technology described in this paper can be used at any civilian installations that require door lock controls. The application range is very wide and can be customized readily.

Social implications

The technology discussed here could also be applied widely and easily in various fields.

Originality/value

The lock has a two-phase design for secure opening: i.e. mask-bit enabling and simultaneous SMS notification. The contactless smart door lock system combines three parts that are linked via the internet, which are a cloud server and database, a personal mobile device, and the device’s fixtures and fittings. The fixtures and fittings include a complementary metal oxide silicon sensor, a limiting switch, an electromagnetic switch, a microcontroller unit, and an RJ-45 internet port. The results of this study could be applied at any civilian installation that requires door lock control.

Abstract

Purpose

The inverse kinematics in robot manipulator have to handle the arctangent and arccosine function. However, the two functions are complicated and need much computation time so that it is difficult to be realized in the typical processing system. The purpose of this paper is to solve this problem by using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to speed up the computation power.

Design/methodology/approach

The Taylor series expansion method is firstly applied to transfer arctangent and arccosine function to a polynomial form. And Look-Up Table (LUT) is used to store the parameters of the polynomial form. Then the behavior of the computation algorithm is described by Very high-speed IC Hardware Description Language (VHDL) and a co-simulation using ModelSim and Simulink is applied to evaluate the correctness of the VHDL code.

Findings

The computation time of arctangent and arccosine function using by FPGA need only 320 and 420 ns, respectively, and the accuracy is <0.01°.

Practical implications

Fast computation in arctangent and arccosine function can speed up the motion response of the real robot system when it needs to perform the inverse kinematics function.

Originality/value

This is the first time such to combine the Taylor series method and LUT method in the computation the arctangent and arccosine function as well as to implement it with FPGA.
