Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the socio-economic factors that will affect women’s empowerment from an Islamic perspective (the Tawhidi epistemological approach) and the impact of women’s empowerment on reducing family poverty.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a quantitative approach to see the relationship between research variables with structural equation model-partial least squares as the analysis tool.

Findings

In general, socio-economic variables had direct and indirect effects on reducing family poverty. In addition, the variable of women’s empowerment in an Islamic perspective can strengthen the influence of socio-economic variables on the alleviation of family poverty.

Research limitations/implications

The limitation of this research lies in the use of religiosity as an indicator with some constraints and the inclusion of all the necessary dimensions of a Muslim family. Additionally, because of the scope of the present research, the results may not be applicable in different areas, especially countries with distinctive characteristics such as having Muslims as the major population. On the other hand, the results of this research may provide comprehensive indicators of empowered Muslim women which enable the correlation between the socio-economic factors and women’s empowerment and how women’s empowerment can contribute to the alleviation of family poverty from the perspective of Islam.

Originality/value

This research provides new insights into the variable of women’s empowerment measured using the Islamic paradigm (Tawhidi epistemology) and includes religiosity as a variable that directly and indirectly influences the reduction of family poverty.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to unveil the impact of government policy, socio-economic variable, Zakat Infaq Shadaqah (ZIS) and financing of Baitul Maal wat Tamwil (BMT) toward severe problem of poverty in Indonesia.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper considers dynamic circular causation model to produce proper solution on Indonesian style of poverty that hitherto remain unresolved.

Findings

All variables including ZIS, government policy, socio-economic variable and BMT financing have an impact toward poverty reduction.

Research limitations/implications

This paper confined to the scope of poverty that occurred in Indonesia only, and therefore all variables and literatures derived from Indonesian pedigree on poverty.

Practical implications

This paper implies that government policy will be shifted toward focusing on extending subsidy for rural society to uplift their income by involving in more real sector.

Originality/value

This paper considered to be scarce as focusing only for Indonesian style of poverty by using dynamic circular causation model as a solution.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a set of design quality indicators (DQIs) suitable for the design and evaluation of public schools in terms of their technical, functional and behavioral performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology entailed the review of literature on the design quality of school buildings to identify potential DQIs. Subsequently, the eighty four DQIs were validated through a three-round Delphi evaluation process, with 35 participants in the first round and 28 participants in the second and third rounds. The participants consisted of architects, facility managers, administrators, teachers and students. The results of the Delphi survey were analyzed based on the relative importance index, which was further rated according to the levels of importance.

Findings

The findings from this process revealed that most of the DQIs were categorized as extremely important and very important.

Originality/value

The design quality of school buildings is crucial to the success of a community’s social life and educational process. However, the lack of a set of DQIs has hindered the potential to benchmark similar facilities and derived lesson learned. The value of the DQIs is in its potential application as a design tool for proposed school buildings, as well as for facility audit of existing school buildings.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the relationships among multiple factors, including growth mindset, lifelong learning and continuous professional development (CPD), influencing teachers’ integration of information and communication technology (ICT) into their teaching methods.

Design/methodology/approach

The study involved 1,095 Indonesian vocational high school teachers who participated in in-service or preservice teacher development programs. Data was collected through a survey, and a structural equation model with partial least squares parameter estimation was used to analyze the relationships and mediations.

Findings

Structural equation modeling revealed that a growth mindset positively affects both lifelong learning and CPD. Moreover, lifelong learning positively impacts CPD. Furthermore, all of these variables demonstrate a positive effect on teachers’ ICT integration in the classroom. The findings indicate that lifelong learning and CPD partially mediate the relationship between a growth mindset and ICT integration.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature on the determinants of teachers’ ICT usage postparticipation in in-service and preservice teacher programs. The findings underscore the significant impact of a growth mindset on teachers’ ICT use in the classroom.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine an effort by management of a private higher education institution in Indonesia to replace its informal, relationship‐based performance system which relied on physical discourse – overseeing operational details that focus on physical accomplishment of tasks – and personal control by the school head, with a tight budgetary control system which relied on technical efficiency and rational discourse.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is an ethnographic case study of a business school – a private higher education institution in Indonesia – known by its abbreviation as Perbanas Business School (PBS), from 1999 to 2001. The researcher is part of the case being studied, and thus is a “native” who completely participates in the change process.

Findings

The paper demonstrates how a control system change that violates existing cultural norms fails to impact day‐to‐day managerial practices or decision‐making processes. Specifically, in a business school setting, replacing an informal relationship‐based control system with a technical efficiency‐based accounting control system only produces chaotic managerial practices and degrades school services. The new system alienates staff and is not accepted or institutionalized. Instead, in daily managerial processes, management continue to rely on informal and personal relationships.

Research limitations/implications

The paper contributes to the accounting literature by studying the process of instituting accounting change and organizational participants' resistance to that change.

Originality/value

Organizational culture, reflected in values, norms of behavior and everyday practices, cannot easily be controlled or changed by chief executive officers.

Abstract

Purpose

The concepts of complexity, endogeneity and circular causation – Myrdal's term was cumulative causation – are shown to be interrelated ones in configuring an economic model in the framework of systemic embedding and its empirical application.

Design/methodology/approach

The ensuing framework of economic modeling with complexity provides a controllable and predictable overarching worldview. Anomie in the economic universe and its embedded world‐system are analytically rejected. This consequence is due to the epistemic nature of modeling that combines complexity, endogeneity, and circular causation for attaining predictability and controllability, even in the face of complex systemic perturbations. The epistemology of unity of knowledge contrasted with rationalism is treated as the foundational worldview. An illustrative empirical work is given to convey the conceptual model and its applied viability.

Findings

Both the theoretical and empirical results point out how the induced effects of knowledge flows in reference to the epistemology of unity of knowledge continuously improves the complementary relationships of the evolutionary learning fields, and rejects marginalism as being logically non‐sequiter in such epistemic systems.

Research limitations/implications

More variables and data would increase the explanation of the continuous simulation in the evolutionary learning world‐system model.

Practical implications

More data would increase the versatility of the empirical exercise.

Social implications

The study is based on the idea of social and economic interface in extending the scope of economic modeling.

Originality/value

The paper is very original in the area of heterodox economics that questions orthodox economic postulates and presents the complex methodology by circular causation method instead.
