Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to reduce eddy current loss in a wire that is affected by an alternating field passing through it. This allows the efficiency of transformers to be upgraded and the quality factor in coils to be increased.

Design/methodology/approach

The use of a magnetoplated wire (MPW) is proposed to reduce eddy current loss in a wire. An MPW is a copper wire (COW) whose circumference is plated with a magnetic thin film. In additional, the theoretical equation for eddy current loss in an MPW is derived for ease of analysis.

Findings

The eddy current loss in an MPW is calculated as a function of the relative permeability and resistivity of its magnetic thin film to reduce the resistance due to the proximity effect of a coil. The eddy current loss in an MPW whose magnetic thin film has a relative permeability of 500 and a resistivity of 0.12 μΩm can be reduced to 4 percent that of COW at a frequency of 1 MHz.

Originality/value

The use of MPW can be expected to upgrade the efficiency of transformers and to increase the quality factor in coils.

Abstract

Care to an older person is provided based on the care plan that was made by a care manager. Therefore, to improve the quality of elderly care, the quality of the care plan must first be improved. Care managers make care plans considering the physical and mental attributes of the elderly. But, as matters stand, these plans are based on the experience of care managers. Therefore, a framework that can support making appropriate care plans is called for. In order to m ake appropriate care plans, it is neccessary to clarify the relation between the attributes of the elderly and the care that should be provided. In this paper, data from a large‐scale investigation of the actual elderly care are analyzed and a process model for deciding the care is proposed. The model provides the necessary basis for what factors must be considered and how the care should be determined.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to present the possibilities of co-creation-type reconstruction methods by focusing on examples of reconstruction in communities affected by the 2011 disaster in Japan. This is because the reconstruction of a community is not a matter of supplementing what has been physically lost, but must include social and cultural aspects. We will also conduct research based on the idea that by placing the residents, who are the bearers of the community, in the lead role, we can achieve a recovery that promotes maturity, rather than a recovery that overwrites the community.

Design/methodology/approach

This research was initially conducted for the purpose of reconstruction assistance, but in the process, the author conducted research using information obtained through material surveys on local history and self-governing activities, interview surveys on pre-disaster life, and participatory observation of reconstruction activities. In order to extract knowledge on co-creative reconstruction methods, the author focused on the actual state of cooperation between residents, experts involved in reconstruction support, and the government, based on past research conducted by the author, and extracted what could be considered co-creation from this.

Findings

Co-creative reconstruction is defined as a state in which a shared vision for reconstruction is created by each organization involved in the reconstruction process, with the residents at the core, and collaboration is generated beyond the organizational framework in order to achieve the objectives. This case study can be divided into the following three stages: the stage where the local residents start the recovery process, the stage where a vision for recovery is drawn up based on the recovery project organized by the government, and the stage where collaboration beyond the organizational framework is created to achieve the recovery vision.

Research limitations/implications

Compared to normal urban development, reconstruction projects in disaster-stricken areas are carried out simultaneously in a short period of time. Therefore, in order to capture the details of reconstruction, it is necessary to limit the target area and continue participant observation. However, the limited number of areas to be studied makes it difficult to conduct comparative verification. In addition, the unclear concept of “co-creation” requires the formation of common values through the verification of various case studies. Therefore, it is essential to form an environment in which various case studies can be collected and discussed.

Practical implications

Many of the research reports on earthquake recovery are extracts on specific themes. As a result, it is difficult to obtain an overall picture of how specific areas are recovering. As such, there are few examples that can serve as a reference when confronting reconstruction and an exploratory approach to the unclear future is required. Therefore, this study has practical findings in that it presents concrete sample information by clearly indicating issues and reconstruction systems on a long-term time horizon.

Social implications

It is nonsense to impose a uniform recovery plan in the midst of a mature society with increasingly diverse values. It is necessary to explore the possibility of bottom-up reconstruction in which residents play a leading role as a way to realize individualized and diverse reconstruction. This study presents the possibility of promoting reconstruction while maintaining equal relationships among residents, experts, and the government.

Originality/value

First, the study captures the actual situation of the village before the earthquake and the actual situation of the village during the reconstruction process, using the village as the basic unit. Second, it captures the reconstruction process of the village over a 10-year time frame. According to a specific timeline, the activities, discussions, and institutional changes to promote reconstruction are positioned. Third, in the limited phase of earthquake reconstruction, the project is providing information and analysis from a comprehensive and multifaceted perspective by narrowing down the target areas and continuing high-resolution surveys.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the transformation process and transformation mechanism of carbon steel under the marine environment.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the transformation and rust layers corrosion products on 0Cu2Cr carbon steel with different cycles coupon test was investigated and deeply explored by scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometer, X-ray diffraction.

Findings

The results showed that the thickness of rust layers grew from 71.83 µm to 533.7 µm with increasing duration of corrosion. The initial corrosion product was γ-FeOOH, then part of the γ-FeOOH continued growing, and under the capillary action, the other part of the γ-FeOOH transformed to α-FeOOH.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper puts forward for the first time a new viewpoint of the development of corrosion products of low-carbon steel in two ways. This discovery provides a new idea for the future development of steel for marine engineering.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the effect of piston skirt design parameters on the dynamic characteristics of a piston–cylinder contact.

Design/methodology/pproach

This paper focuses on an analysis of the piston dynamic response. The oil-film pressure and the structural deformation were approximated, respectively, by finite difference method and finite element method.

Findings

The results show that the design parameters such as clearance, offset and the axial location of piston pin have a great influence on the dynamics of the piston and hence on the piston slap phenomenon and the frictional power loss.

Originality/value

All the results mainly focus on the slap noise of the engine and can be used in the piston–liner development at the development of the engine.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a new ten-transistor (10T) SRAM bit-cell with differential read and write operations. The cell structure has read buffer on each side of the cell to improve read performance and comprises six main body transistors’ connections similar to the commercial 6T SRAM cell to improve write performance. The proposed bit-cell is designed with tri-gated FinFET technology and implemented on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate. 3D TCAD simulations are performed to characterize the efficacy of the proposed bit-cell. Performance characteristics of the proposed bit-cell are compared with the recently reported 8T bit-cell as well as the commercial 6T cell. The proposed bit-cell achieves 26.50 per cent and 35.10 per cent higher read static noise margin (RSNM) as compared with that of 8T and 6T bit-cells, respectively, at a VDD of 0.9 V. The proposed bit-cell also offers 54.78 per cent and 21.18 per cent smaller read delay compared with 8T SRAM-NEW and 6T bit-cells, respectively. The static power dissipation of the proposed bit-cell is comparable with that of the 6T bit-cell and 24.5 per cent lesser compared with that of the 8T bit- cell. The overall electrical quality of the SRAM circuit with the proposed bit-cell is enhanced up to 1.673 times and 1.22 times as compared with the 8T SRAM-NEW and 6T bit-cells, respectively.
