Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a geometrical void model in conjunction with a multiscale method to evaluate the effect of interraster distance, bead (raster) width and layer height, on the voids concentration (volume) and subsequently calculate the final mechanical properties of the fused deposition modeling parts at constant infill.

Design/methodology/approach

A geometric model of the voids inside the representative volume element (RVE) is combined with a two-scale asymptotic homogenization method. The RVEs are subjected to periodic boundary conditions solved by finite element (FE) to calculate the effective mechanical properties of the corresponding RVEs. The results are validated with literature and experiments.

Findings

Bead width from 0.2 to 0.3 mm, reported a decrease of 25% and 24% void volume for a constant layer height (0.1 and 0.2 mm – 75% infill). It is reported that the void’s volume increased up to 14%, 32% and 36% for 75%, 50% and 25% infill by varying layer height (0.1–0.2  and 0.3 mm), respectively. For elastic modulus, 14%, 9% and 10% increase is reported when the void’s volume is decreased from 0.3 to 0.1 mm at a constant 75% infill density. The bead width and layer height have an inverse effect on voids volume.

Originality/value

This work brings values: a multiscale-geometric model capable of predicting the voids controllability by varying interraster distance, layer height and bead width. The idealized RVE generation slicer software and Solidworks save time and cost (<10 min, $0). The proposed model can effectively compute the mechanical properties together with the voids analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a hierarchical multiscale model to evaluate the effect of fused deposition modeling (FDM) process parameters on mechanical properties. Asymptotic homogenization mathematical theory is developed into two scales (micro and macro scales) to compute the effective elastic and shear modulus of the printed parts. Four parameters, namely, raster orientation, layer height, build orientation and porosity are studied.

Design/methodology/approach

The representative volume elements (RVEs) are generated by mimicking the microstructure of the printed parts. The RVEs subjected to periodic boundary conditions were solved using finite element. The experimental characterization according to ASTM D638 was conducted to validate the computational modeling results.

Findings

The computational model reports reduction (E1, ∼>38%) and (G12, ∼>50%) when porosity increased. The elastic modulus increases (1.31%–47.68%) increasing the orthotropic behavior in parts. Quasi-solids parts (100% infill) possess 10.71% voids. A reduction of 11.5% and 16.5% in elastic modulus with layer height is reported. In total, 45–450 oriented parts were highly orthotropic, and 0–00 parts were strongest. The order of parameters affecting the mechanical properties is porosity > layer height > raster orientation > build orientation.

Originality/value

This study adds value to the state-of-the-art terms of construction of RVEs using slicing software, discarding the necessity of image processing and study of porosity in FDM parts, reporting that the infill density is not the only measure of porosity in these parts.

Abstract

Purpose

Researcher agreed that job performance has a positive effect on productivity as well as an organisation’s efficiency. Thus, this study aims to investigate the impact of mindfulness skill, inclusive leadership (IL), employee work engagement and self-compassion on the overall job performance of secondary school teachers in Hong Kong. It then evaluates the mediating effect of employee work engagement between the relationships of mindfulness skill, IL and job performance, as well as the moderate effect of self-compassion between the relationships of mindfulness skill, IL and employee work engagement.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample comprised 263 teachers working from three secondary schools in Sha Tin, Hong Kong. The data was then analysed using Smart PLS version 4.0.9.

Findings

The results showed significant positive relationships between mindfulness skill and IL towards employee work engagement and between employee work engagement and job performance; meanwhile, there emerged a significant effect on the relationship between mindfulness skill and IL towards job performance. Furthermore, this research has confirmed that self-compassion did not moderate the relationship between mindfulness skill, IL and employee work engagement, but employee work engagement plays a mediating effect on the relationship between mindfulness skill, IL and job performance.

Originality/value

This research has helped to fill the literature gap by examining the mediating roles of employee work engagement and mediator role of self-compassion in the integrated relationship of multi-factor and job performance. Examining the mediating role of employee work engagement has helped to enhance the understanding of the underlying principle of the indirect influence of mindfulness skill, IL and job performance. The result of this research shows that self-compassion plays a vital role in influencing the employees’ work engagement. Hence, it is important that companies design human resource management policy that enables self-compassion to be used as a consideration psychological-related strategy when structing organisation or teams. It is also crucial for top management and policymakers to define and communicate the organisation’s operating principle, value and goals.

Abstract

Purpose

To predict the real behavior of the full-scale model using a scale model, optimized simulation should be achieved. In reinforced concrete (RC) models, scaling can be substantially more critical than in single-material models because of multiple reasons such as insufficient bonding strength between small-diameter steel bars and concrete, and excessive aggregate size. Overall, there is a shortfall of laboratory and field-testing studies on the behavior of secant pile walls under lateral and axial loads. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to investigate the validity and the performance of the 1/10th scaled RC secant pile wall under the influence of different types of loading.

Design/methodology/approach

The structural performance of the examined models was evaluated using two types of tests: bending and axial compression. A self-compacting concrete mix was suggested, which provided the best concrete mix workability and appropriate compressive strength.

Findings

Under axial and bending loads, the failure modes were typical. Where the plain and reinforced concrete piles worked in tandem to support the load throughout the loading process, even when they failed. The experimental results were relatively consistent with some empirical equations for calculating the modulus of elasticity and critical buckling load. This confirmed the validity of the proposed model.

Originality/value

According to the analysis and verification of experimental tests, the proposed 1/10th scaled RC secant pile model can be used for future laboratory purposes, especially in the field of geotechnical engineering.

Abstract

Purpose

Supply chain integration (SCI) has become a key strategy for hotels in facing their environment. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of the organizational culture on the three dimensions of SCI. The competing value framework divides the organizational culture into four types, namely, hierarchical, group, rational and developmental cultures.

Design/methodology/approach

A structural equations model was developed to test the hypotheses proposed. The data were collected by means of a questionnaire with a seven-point Likert-type rating scale that was distributed to managers and assistant managers of 114 four- or five-star hotels located in two Egyptian cities, Hurgada and Sharm El Sheikh.

Findings

The results of the structured model confirm the direct link between the organizational culture and SCI. The findings suggest that rational culture is the most appropriate for SCI because it is fully associated with SCI. In contrast, hierarchical culture and developmental culture are significantly related to internal and customer integration. Group culture only has a positive influence on internal integration.

Originality/value

This study is the first to analyze the impact of organizational culture on SCI in the hospitality sector. The results contribute to the literature by providing managers with practical knowledge about the significant influence of organizational culture on SCI.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to draw a map of the general features of epistemological and critical concerns in contemporary Islamic philosophy. This study will not be confined to the domain of academic philosophy or to those who are professionals in the field of philosophy.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper adopted the critical rational approach in dealing with contemporary Islamic philosophy in the Arab world. The scope will include scholars from different fields of epistemology who tried to present a “vision” of the attitude that should be adopted in facing the challenges of the age and the problems of the nation on the epistemological level or the political, economic and social levels.

Findings

There is a need for a philosophy of action and progress rather than a philosophy that is based on abstract ideas and theories and of words/rhetoric. The ethics required to accomplish this ought to identify the attributes of the citizen who can reach self-actualization through legitimate means based on a progress agenda with theoretical and philosophical foundations.

Research limitations/implications

Because a critical rational approach can be dealt with from different perspectives, this paper will adopt the classification of the principal intellectual trends: the reformist, secular and liberal.

Practical implications

This paper covers a long time span to determine whether the philosophical projects have been effective.

Originality/value

This paper, which criticizes the philosophic projects that are theoretically unsound and that do not address real social problems (like poverty), argues the need for a philosophy of progress and action. This will lead to devising an agenda that addresses the challenges the society is facing and to finding alternative and creative solutions resulting in development.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to showcase the significant achievements of Egypt's scientists in the 20th century across various fields of study such as medicine, physics, chemistry, biology, math, geology, astronomy and engineering. The paper highlights the struggles and successes of these scientists, as well as the cultural, social and political factors that influenced their lives and work. The aim is to inspire young people to pursue careers in science and make their own contributions to society by presenting these scientists as role models for hard work and dedication. Ultimately, the paper seeks to promote the importance of science and its impact on society.

Design/methodology/approach

The purpose of this review is to present the scientific biographies of Egypt's most distinguished scientists, primarily in the field of Natural Sciences, in a balanced and comprehensive manner. The work is objective, honest and abstract, avoiding any bias or exaggeration. The author provides a clear and concise methodology, including a brief introduction to the scientist and their field of study, an explanation of their major contributions, the impact of their work on society, any challenges or obstacles faced during their career and their lasting legacy. The aim is to showcase the important achievements of these scientists, their impact on their respective fields and to inspire future generations to pursue scientific careers.

Findings

The group of outstanding scientists in 20th century Egypt were shaped by various factors, including familial upbringing, education, society, political and cultural atmosphere and state support for scientific research. These scientists made significant contributions to various academic disciplines, including medicine, physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and engineering. Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the effects of different leadership styles, transformational, transactional and authentic leadership, on travel agents’ innovational behavior, with organizational culture as a mediator.

Design/methodology/approach

The study aim was achieved by using an integrative model using LISREL 8.80. Quantitative research was used using a questionnaire. A convenient sampling technique was used to select the sample. A total of 500 questionnaires were distributed to travel agents, out of which 415 were returned, and 376 usable ones were statistically handled (75.2% response rate).

Findings

Transformational leadership has a significant impact on organizational culture (ß = 0.34) and innovational behavior (ß = 0.46). Authentic leadership has a significant impact on both organizational culture (ß = 0.38) and innovational behavior (ß = 0.52). Transactional leadership significantly impacts organizational culture (ß = 0.38); however, it has no significant impact on innovational behavior (ß = 0.31). The positive influence of leadership styles on innovative behavior is mediated by innovative organizational culture (ß = 0.92).

Research limitations/implications

Further research should explore the relationship between other leadership styles and innovation. Additionally, investigates the relationship between organizational culture factors and innovation. This study targeted category “A” travel agencies. Therefore, to generalize the study findings, the study should be replicated with other categories of travel agencies.

Practical implications

Travel agencies organizations should invest in managers who adopt authentic and transformational leadership, whereas transactional leaders are urged to be open to new ideas, invest in the knowledge and skills of their employees, encourage friendly communication with their employees and ensure that there are reasonable punishment and reward systems within the organization.

Originality/value

This study presents new insights into tourism field by integrating the study variables (organizational culture, innovative behavior and leadership style), into one framework, particularly in developing countries’ contexts.

Abstract

Purpose

The research works concerned with heritage management, in general, are available domestically and globally, but they are not as abundant as required when it comes to the management of twentieth-century urban heritages, particularly the Somali region. Thus, this research is assumed as innovative and evocative of additional research initiatives in the management of twentieth-century urban heritages, and it can assure the development of sustainable heritage tourism in the research area.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed a cross-sectional survey as the research design, and qualitative data of both primary and secondary types were collected for this research. Therefore, purposively selected knowledgeable individuals in heritages of the study area were involved in in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, and field surveys of twentieth-century built urban heritage sites were conducted in Jigjiga, Erer and Qebridahar cities. Generally, observation, face-to-face interview interviews and focused group discussions were used to collect primary data, and document analysis was also used to collect secondary data.

Findings

The findings of the study revealed that the Somali region is rich in twentieth-century urban built heritage. The imperial palace, administrative centers, mosques, shrines, churches, military camps, Italian-built architecture sites, patriot centers, statues of local heroes, older bus stations and city centers are among the twentieth-century built heritages in the region. However, most of these heritages were not recognized. Consequently; conservation, promotion and use of the twentieth-century urban heritages for sustainable development are given little attention despite that there are infrastructural facilities for tourists in the region and the proximity of the region to the heritage tourism corridors of Harar and Dire Dawa.

Research limitations/implications

Awareness should be made to the concerned institutions and societies about socio-economic and cultural values of the twentieth-century urban built heritage.

Practical implications

The Federal Culture and Tourism Ministry and Culture and Tourism Bureau of the Somali region should cooperatively develop a short and long-term plan of action to manage the twentieth-century built urban heritage of the region and use them for sustainable development through the participation of the society.

Social implications

The local institutions, communities and individuals should be aware of and involved in the conservation, promotion and use of the twentieth-century built urban heritages for sustainable social, cultural and economic development.

Originality/value

As far as the researchers' knowledge is concerned, there is no research of a similar type in which the setting and results are closer to this. Therefore, this research is original and is based on extensive primary data gathered from field surveys.
