Abstract

Purpose

Libraries can be seen as the collective identity of its employees engaged in providing a myriad of services to a community of patrons. Libraries can also exist in virtual settings, defined with descriptive parameters, described by a wider user group external to the library environment. The diverse nature of what constitutes libraries is illustrated by researchers, such as Marino and Lapintie (2015), who use the term “meta-meeting place” when describing its environs. Whatever model is used to describe contemporary libraries, the library environment usually has numerous needs and demands coming from a variety of stakeholders, from administrators to patrons. This chapter examines how we, as librarians, with users, co-construct library as both space and place.

Methodology/approach

We used a theoretical framework (social constructionism) to show how library identity is established by its users in the space planning process to address their needs and expectations and provided a case study of the main library at the University of South Florida.

Findings

We found that libraries are reflective of the vision and values of a diverse community and the social-political milieu in which they are housed. Librarians used a number of innovative methods and frames to create best/evidence-based practice approaches in space planning, re-envisioning library functions, and conducting outcomes/programmatic assessment. For librarians to create that sense of place and space for our users requires effective and open conversations and examination of our own inherent (and often unacknowledged) contradictions as to what libraries are or should be as enduring structures with evolving uses and changing users. For example, only a few of the studies focused on the spatial use and feel of libraries using new technologies or methodologies, such as social network analysis, discourse analysis, or GPS, to map the use of physical and virtual space.

Practical implications

First, new ways of working and engaging require reexamination of assessment and evaluation procedures and processes. To accomplish this, we must develop a more effective culture of assessment and to use innovative evaluation measures to determine use, user paths, and formal and informal groupings. Changes that affect patron and staff perceptions of library as place/third space may be difficult to assess using quantitative surveys, such as LibQual, that may not provide an opportunity for respondents to provide specifics of what “place” means to them. Second, it is important to have effective communication among all members of the library (patrons, library staff, and university administration) so that we design spaces/places that enhance the relationships among users, technology, pedagogy, and learning spaces, not just the latest “thing” in the literature.

Originality/value

This value of this review is to provide a social constructionist perspective (frame) on how we plan library space. This approach provides opportunities to truly engage our patrons and administration in the co-construction of what “our library” should be since it provides insight to group, place, and social dynamics.

Abstract

The purpose of this survey is to list and describe the publicly available databases produced by the European Community (EC), the databases produced from EC information by private companies and the principal database services from private companies that have particularly good coverage of EC affairs.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the determinant factors of Islamic financial literacy (IFL) of the Z generation in Indonesia. As the role of family and social influence play an important role in shaping a person’s character, behavior and understanding, especially for the young generation in Indonesia, so this study proposed communication pattern in the family, financial socialization in family and social influence along with religiosity and sociodemographic factors as determinant factors of the IFL in Indonesia.

Design/methodology/approach

This study applied survey method with online questionnaire. There are 978 respondents from various provinces in Indonesia who were participated in this study. Then, data were analyzed by using Structural Equation Model.

Findings

Based on data analysis, this study found that communication pattern in the family, social influence, religiosity and sociodemographic factors have a significant influence on the IFL. Meanwhile, financial socialization in the family has no significant influence on IFL.

Practical implications

The results can be useful for Indonesian government especially in making decision and policy to encourage the increase in IFL in Indonesia.

Originality/value

This study has a theoretical contribution in providing comprehensive framework regarding the relationship between IFL and its underlying factors such as individual factors, family and social factors. In addition, this study also focused on the IFL of generation Z − an aspect that has been overlooked in previous studies.

Abstract

Pro‐Cite is a software package for managing personal bibliographic databases from which printed bibliographies are frequently required. The article first considers the kinds of project for which Pro‐Cite is intended, and those for which it is not intended. In the latter category is included the management of large permanent databases to which powerful online access is frequently required. Its strength lies in its specialisation: it provides pre‐defined data structures for various kinds of printed and audio/visual materials and pre‐defined output formats corresponding to a range of standard styles. The package is discussed in detail with sections on Editing, Searching, Printing and Browsing, Indexing, and Sorting. The article also discusses the use of Biblio‐Links. These are reformatting devices which are used to convert downloaded online search results to Pro‐Cite format.

Abstract

Bayesian additive regression trees (BART) is a fully Bayesian approach to modeling with ensembles of trees. BART can uncover complex regression functions with high-dimensional regressors in a fairly automatic way and provide Bayesian quantification of the uncertainty through the posterior. However, BART assumes independent and identical distributed (i.i.d) normal errors. This strong parametric assumption can lead to misleading inference and uncertainty quantification. In this chapter we use the classic Dirichlet process mixture (DPM) mechanism to nonparametrically model the error distribution. A key strength of BART is that default prior settings work reasonably well in a variety of problems. The challenge in extending BART is to choose the parameters of the DPM so that the strengths of the standard BART approach is not lost when the errors are close to normal, but the DPM has the ability to adapt to non-normal errors.

Abstract

In this series, specifications, properties and test results of microcomputer software for information storage and retrieval are listed and compared. This article is devoted to the previously defined category of end‐user software, sometimes also referred to as bibliographic formatting software. Eight different programs have been tested and assessed: Archivist, BIB/Search, Library Master, Notebook II, Papyrus, Pro‐Cite, The Ref‐Filer and Reference Manager. All programs run under MS‐DOS, though there are also Apple Macintosh versions for Pro‐Cite and Reference Manager. For each of the eight programs about 100 facts and test results are tabulated. All the programs are individually discussed as well.

Abstract

On many occasions when academics have an online search conducted through their libraries they take their printed list of references, for which they have waited patiently for perhaps a week, back to their offices or homes whereupon they will type them all into their microcomputers for local storage using appropriate database management or word‐processing software for the purpose.

Abstract

The implications of the Single European Market for libraries and information services are considered with some examples of what is being done. After a general introduction to 1992, the Plan of Action for Libraries in the EC is considered and the library implications of the five Action Lines. The roles of European Documentation Centres, EC Depository Libraries, European Reference Centres; Euro Information Centres and online databases are considered, together with developments in co‐operation and also the human implications.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore relationships among three primary variables: sports spectatorship of intercollegiate football, university brand equity and student satisfaction. The primary purpose is to understand the extent to which athletic programs influence campus culture, sense of community and the satisfaction of undergraduate students. A secondary purpose is to probe the factor structure, reliability and validity of a recently developed sports spectatorship scale.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collected data through an online survey of 419 undergraduate students enrolled at three separate Midwestern universities, using previously developed and validated survey scales.

Findings

Relationships between brand equity and student satisfaction suggest that athletic programs provide a benefit to universities by improving students’ psychological sense of community and emotional connection to the institution. Furthermore, correlations between sports spectatorship and brand equity measures suggest an internal advertising effect.

Originality/value

The results contribute to the understanding of the role of intercollegiate athletic programs, in this case from the perspective of enrolled undergraduate students. Additionally, the findings recommend ways that universities might maximize some of the benefits by emphasizing the emotional connection of the student body to the teams. The paper also contributes to the validation of the sports spectatorship scale as a tool for further research.
