Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to conduct a reliable remote manipulation with good contact perception of the remote site. The long-term experience of the authors’ repeatedly confirm that the highest relevance lies in monitoring the wrench acting at a structurally weak point of the work piece rather than monitoring the wrench experienced by the robot end-effector.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach followed here is to sense the wrench at the interface of the robot end-effector and the environment. Position and orientation data and environment model are used to arrive at the contact point in real time. The intent of remote contact procedure is understood based on the knowledge of motion trajectory. All the above information is used to develop a wrench transformation to obtain the force diagrams.

Findings

The haptic solutions greatly suffer from objectivity, and therefore may result in inconsistency in an operator’s role. Intermediary telepresence through the visual communication of the wrench at the remote site in the form of force diagram provides excellent consistency across the operators and operations. Observing six components of the wrench in separate graphs does not provide on-line error estimate. Force diagrams suggested in the paper are found to be highly effective in perceiving the wrench.

Practical implications

The contact mode operations like assembly, surgery, docking, etc. still suffer due to the lack of easily perceivable wrench visualization. This paper provides solution to such practical issues.

Originality/value

The concept is original, and has evolved steadily over a period of time.

Abstract

Purpose

Six-axis force sensors play an important role in civilian and military fields because of their multifunctionality. In the context of sensor structure design, sensitivity and sensitivity isotropy are often considered. This paper aims to study the possible relationship between the sensitivity/sensitivity isotropy and structural parameters of an 8/4–4 parallel six-axis force sensor. A comprehensive evaluation index and structural optimization design scheme are suggested in the end.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the conditional number of the Jacobian matrix spectral norm, the sensitivity and sensitivity isotropy of the sensor are derived. Orthogonal experiments are used to determine the degree of primary and secondary factors that have a substantial effect on the sensor characteristics. The relationship between the performance indices and the structural parameters is analyzed by the performance atlas method. The comprehensive evaluation index lays the foundation for the structural optimization design of an 8/4–4 parallel six-axis force sensor.

Findings

The variation in each performance index of the sensor for each of the structural parameters is analyzed, and the structural parameters of the sensor with the desired performance indices can be easily selected from the performance atlases. A comprehensive performance evaluation index with a target value of 1 is proposed, and the overall influence of the structural parameters on the sensor performance index is investigated. A simulation example shows the feasibility of the proposed evaluation index.

Originality/value

The importance of each structural parameter of the 8/4–4 parallel six-axis force sensor is determined through orthogonal experiments in this paper. Relations among the structural parameters meeting the performance indices are derived and shown in the performance atlases. A comprehensive evaluation index is proposed to analyze the overall sensor performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The six-axis force/torque sensor based on a Y-type structure has the advantages of simple structure, small space volume, low cost and wide application prospects. To meet the overall structural stiffness requirements and sensor performance requirements in robot engineering applications, this paper aims to propose a Y-type six-axis force/torque sensor.

Design/methodology/approach

The performance indicators such as each component sensitivities and stiffnesses of the sensor were selected as optimization objectives. The multiobjective optimization equations were established. A multiple quadratic response surface in ANSYS Workbench was modeled by using the central composite design experimental method. The optimal manufacturing structural parameters were obtained by using multiobjective genetic algorithm.

Findings

The sensor was optimized and the simulation results show that the overload resistance of the sensor is 200%F.S., and the axial stiffness, radial stiffness, bending stiffness and torsional stiffness are 14.981 kN/mm, 16.855 kN/mm, 2.0939 kN m/rad and 6.4432 kN m/rad, respectively, which meet the design requirements, and the sensitivities of each component of the optimized sensor have been well increased to be 2.969, 2.762, 4.010, 2.762, 2.653 and 2.760 times as those of the sensor with initial structural parameters. The sensor prototype with optimized parameters was produced. According to the calibration experiment of the sensor, the maximum Class I and II errors and measurement uncertainty of each force/torque component of the sensor are 1.835%F.S., 1.018%F.S. and 1.606%F.S., respectively. All of them are below the required 2%F.S.

Originality/value

Hence, the conclusion can be drawn that the sensor has excellent comprehensive performance and meets the expected practical engineering requirements.

Abstract

Purpose

Industries worldwide have been striving to serve the increasing demand of consumers alongside providing importance to environmental issues. Yet, there are concern-raising changes on the planet, such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting in a temperature rise. India remains a vital party of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change. Henceforth, the paper aims to study the increased emissions of GHG in Puducherry, an Indian Union Territory that faces tremendous pressure owing to its denser population.

Design/methodology/approach

The research is designed as a case study conducted in a tyre manufacturing unit in Puducherry. The industrial sector was chosen, as it is the largest contributor (78%) of the total GHG emissions. Case studies were chosen to analyse the GHG emissions and the effects of implementing the policies and imposing interventions over time. The identified areas of improvement, proposed changes and the implemented ones with the results over a three-year period have been discussed.

Findings

The present study’s GHG inventorisation for Puducherry paved the way for preparing mitigation and adaptation plans. A total of 21 and 48 changes were incorporated to conserve fuel and power, respectively. A significant 11% reduction in power consumption and 1,113,008/litres of furnace oil was achieved. This translates to 5,115 tCO2 and 3,306 tCO2, respectively.

Practical implications

This research will help to improve the importance of climate change management in the manufacturing sector, and it will pave the way for achieving effective sustainable practices.

Originality/value

Such case studies could cumulatively impact the policy directives/ interventions on GHG emissions. Though this seems a small leap, putting them into practice at firm levels would contribute significantly towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

Abstract

Purpose

Over the last two decades, green supply chain management (GSCM) has enabled businesses to operate in an environmentally friendly manner. The present review examines 234 research articles and proposes a methodical literature review on GSCM, focusing on the aspects of sustainable development.

Design/methodology/approach

The work examines conceptual, analytical, empirical and non-empirical research articles, analyzing at all levels of the organization, such as firm, dyad, supply chain and network. The objective of the review is to provide insights into the state and scope of existing research in the domain of GSCM, to identify the prevalence of GSCM and to consolidate the trend of future research. The literature review follows a systematic methodology for analyzing the literature.

Findings

The findings can support researchers in identifying research areas with significant impact and streamline research on GSCM in the future. Practitioners can utilize this structured classification to strategize their green initiatives in their firms.

Originality/value

The work contributes to providing literature that explores a detailed review in GSCM. The proposed literature review captures critical aspects in the domain of GSCM and offers future research directions.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore supply chain resilience (SCR) and provides a unique resilience index. The work measures the resilience status of 37 organizations across 22 industries and provides insight into accessing the supply chain (SC) vulnerability in an uncertain environment.

Design/methodology/approach

This study involves measuring the resilience status of 37 organizations across 22 industries based on a subjective decision-making approach using fuzzy logic. Experts from industries rated the importance and level of implementation of 33 attributes of SCR, which are used to develop a fuzzy index of implementation that explains the resilience status of organizations.

Findings

A novel coexistent resilience index is computed based on mutualism to exhibit the proportion of contribution or learning of each attribute of an organization in an industry. The research will enhance the response plans and formation of strategic alliances for mutual coexistence by industry.

Research limitations/implications

Evidence-based interpretations and suggestions are provided for each industry to enhance resilience through coexistence.

Originality/value

The work uniquely contributes to academic literature and SC strategy. The novel coexistent resilience index is computed based on mutualism, facilitating researchers to access SC resiliency.

Case overview

The case is based on Titan Company Limited (Titan), one of India’s profitable diversified companies. Set in April 2020, the case presents the evolution of Titan’s growth strategy in the last three decades. The company had grown by continuously exploring adjacent categories in the personal lifestyle space. The case asks whether the strategy that has guided Titan for the past three decades would continue to provide growth. What changes, if any, should be made by C.K. Venkataraman—the new CEO who had taken charge a few months back in October 2019—and his team?

The case describes Titan’s evolution from 1987 to 2020. ‘Winning times’, the first section of the case, describes Titan’s early choices in the watches business that helped the company achieve market dominance and its successive choices to expand the scope of watches businesses by entering new adjacencies. The section also details the evolution of Titan’s design, manufacturing, marketing and retailing capabilities in early years. ‘Looking for another gem’ describes Titan’s venture into the jewellery business – the failure of its early attempts to export and its pivot to domestic market and the successful turnaround of the business. ‘On the fast track to growth’ deals with Titan’s accessories business. The section ‘Eyeing new businesses’ describes Titan’s foray into prescription eyewear and precision engineering businesses and the company’s performance in these businesses. ‘A new identity’ details Titan’s adoption of a distinct corporate identity in 2013. ‘New businesses’ provides information on Titan’s recent foray into fragrances and sarees business. Abstract

Purpose

The force sensing is used in robotic assembly tasks. The sensors developed are much advanced and costly. The force transducers are generally configured and deployed at the wrist of the robotic arm. The purpose of this paper is to describe the concept of an elastic transducer to make available cost-effective force sensor with simple construction and analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

The analytical formulation is developed herewith for one-, two- and three-axis elastic cantilever configuration. The force to be measured can be calculated analytically using derived strain expressions. The strains are estimated using proposed formulation, further crosschecked through FEA approach. The analytical method for strain estimation using moment equations is presented along with validation using finite element method (FEM) tool (ANSYS 15.0) with the case study.

Findings

The derivation of expressions for force components from strains is developed. The resulting formulation found to confirm the estimated strains from analytical methods closely to the FEM results. Theoretically, it is possible to find contact forces and angle of force on stationary force platform. It is found that the magnitude of estimated contact forces is within 1 per cent deviations.

Research limitations/implications

The mathematical modeling and FEA simulation of the three-axis force sensor under elastic (no deformation) conditions.

Originality/value

These sensors are ranging from simple crossbar structure to Stewart platform type. The subsequent development in this field pertains to performance enhancement such as accuracy and cross-sensitivity. The basic structure of the sensor has not changed drastically. The major problem, as discussed by many authors, is a complex interdependence of six components and intricate geometrical structure. Derivation of expressions for force components from strains is a breakthrough contribution by the authors. The analytical treatment for finding the strains is aimed in this paper.

Abstract

However remote the connection may appear to be between milk and the results of chronic adrenal insufficiency from primary disease or atrophy of the adrenal glands, first described by Thomas Addison in 1855, recent trends have demonstrated that milk was indirectly responsible for many cases of the disease. Up to the period 1945–50, by far the commonest cause of Addison's Disease was tuberculosis and destruction of the adrenals was usually complete. Their infection was mostly secondary to pulmonary infection or some other primary site. At necropsy, typical tuberculous growths were usually found; necrotic, caseating masses, with thick fibrous capsule, and calcification. This was before the results of the clean milk campaigns of the twenties and thirties could be seen; before the steady rise in the consumption of pasteurised milk. Milkborne tuberculosis was commonplace—tuberculous lymphadenopathy, bones and joint disease and abdominal tuberculosis.
