Abstract
Goodness‐of‐fit test based on Kϕ‐divergence between observed and theoretical frequencies are considered. The asymptotic chi‐square null distribution and three alternative approximations to the exact distribution function of this family are compared in small samples. Numerical results are presented for the symmetric null hypothesis for different multinomial sample sizes with various cell numbers. Exact power under specific alternatives to the symmetric null hypothesis are calculated and a comparison with the family of power divergence statistics is made.

Abstract
In this paper we address the question of how telecommunications affect economic growth, by estimating the effect of direct investment in telecommunications infrastructures on aggregate output, employment, and investment in Spain. In contrast with previous studies, the problem is analyzed in a dynamic multivariate framework which allows for explicit consideration of feedbacks among all the variables. We find significant effects of the investment in infrastructures of telecommunications on aggregate output, employment and investment which extend for several years. This might justify a policy for stimulating investment in this sector.

Abstract
More than 20 songs by Spanish and non-Spanish bands about the Castilian lord and epic hero Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, El Cid, account for the topicality of the Hispanic Middle Ages in heavy metal. This chapter explores how diversely El Cid is addressed in 10 of these songs, in particular, from the perspectives of reception theory and both the cultural background of the band (Spanish or non-Spanish) and the language in which the lyrics are written (Spanish or English). Through detailed textual analysis and contextualisation, I will examine how, for Spanish (and Spanish-American) bands, El Cid serves the purpose of naturalising the stereotypical heavy-metal medieval knight, thereby functioning as a vindication of Hispanic cultural heritage within what is perceived to be an Anglo-American (and Germanic-Nordic) dominated musical scene. By contrast, non-Spanish bands resort primarily to El Cid to refresh the overused motif of the medieval knight, but sometimes in a more connoted manner as well, in which his iconic value as a Moor-slayer and a defender of the Western white Christian principles is highlighted. Moreover, I will discuss the appropriation and re-appropriation of El Cid by, respectively, non-Spanish and Spanish heavy metal bands, from the point of view of cultural appreciation and appropriation, and Islamophobia.

Abstract
Purpose
To show the key points of a development education program for engineering studies fitted within the framework of the human development paradigm.
Design/methodology/approach
The bases of the concept of technology for human development are presented, and the relationship with development education analysed. Special attention is dedicated to the role of case studies in engineering courses. After that, the development education program pushed by the Civil Engineering School of Barcelona and Engineering without Borders is explained, focusing on two major contributions: two optional courses about international aid and development and nine classroom case studies about different technologies used in real co‐operation projects.
Findings
This work provides a conceptual basis for incorporating development education into engineering studies, a general overview of different activities promoted in Spanish technical universities and practical information about optional courses and classroom case studies.
Research limitations/implications
The proposal is based on the experience in Spanish engineering curricula (mostly in five‐year degrees). Some of the topics covered by the courses and the case studies can be better adapted at postgraduate level in three‐ or four‐year degrees.
Practical implications
It is shown that development education can be incorporated into engineering studies through different specific non‐expensive activities.
Originality/value
This work presents and puts in context the development education activities pushed coordinately between a non‐governmental organization and an engineering school. Thus, it can be of major interest for both teachers and workers of the international development field.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the ex ante projected future trajectories of real tourism exports and relative tourism export prices of the EU-15, conditional on expert real gross domestic product growth forecasts for the global economy provided by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development for the years 2013-2017.
Design/methodology/approach
To this end, the global vector autoregression (GVAR) framework is applied to a comprehensive panel data set ranging from 1994Q1 to 2013Q3 for a cross-section of 45 countries. This approach allows for interdependencies between countries that are assumed to be equally affected by common global developments.
Findings
In line with economic theory, growing global tourist income combined with decreasing relative destination price ensures, in general, increasing tourism demand for the politically and macroeconomically distressed EU-15. However, the conditional forecast increases in tourism demand are under-proportional for some EU-15 member countries.
Practical implications
Rather than simply relying on increases in tourist income, the low price competitiveness of the EU-15 member countries should also be addressed by tourism planners and developers in order to counter the rising competition for global market shares and ensure future tourism export earnings.
Originality/value
One major contribution of this research is that it applies the novel GVAR framework to a research question in tourism demand analysis and forecasting. Furthermore, the analysis of the ex ante conditionally projected future trajectories of real tourism exports and relative tourism export prices of the EU-15 is a novel aspect in the tourism literature since conditional forecasting has rarely been performed in this discipline to date, in particular, in combination with ex ante forecasting.

In the quest for better construction workforce management, this chapter explored the background of workforce management and related theories, models, and practices. Through a review, the chapter provided meaning to the concept of construction and workforce management. The chapter concluded that while the construction industry worldwide is important to the economic growth of the countries where it operates, the industry’s management of its workforce is challenged by several problems. These problems include the nature of the industry, skill shortage, unhealthy working environment, and poor image of the industry, among others. Also, while the construction industry is rich in diversity, this has been a major source of problems for workforce management. The chapter further revealed that to improve workforce management and attain better-performing construction organisations, careful recruitment, effective training, providing a safe working environment, putting policies to promote diversity, and ensuring innovativeness, among others, are essential.

In terms of continuum mechanics a twin is represented by the sudden appearance of a shear eigenstrain state in a distinct region. The corresponding elastic strain energy, the interface energy and the energy dissipated due to the irreversible character of the deformation process are investigated. If the total amount of these energy terms, spent by the twinning process, can be provided by the interaction energy of an external and/or internal stress state with respect to the twin shear eigenstrain, then either a deformation twin band or a twin nucleus may appear. Realistic estimations of the dimensions of deformation twins can be presented. This energetic interpretation of twinning is experimentally demonstrated for intermetallic TiAl.

Abstract
Purpose
To evaluate the performance of two cathodic protection (CP) systems applied to steel reinforced concrete structures manufactured with calcareous aggregates and exposed to the tropical‐humid marine environment at the Yucatán peninsula in Mexico.
Design/methodology/approach
Rectangular concrete beams were manufactured using a water/cement ratio = 0.65, with and without the addition of NaCl in the mixing water. Specimens subjected to CP, eight to impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) and eight to sacrificial anode cathodic protection (SACP) were partially immersed in natural seawater during 360 days. The half cell potential (HCP) and the current consumption were recorded during the total exposure time.
Findings
The measured HCP values of the steel rebar in the beams subjected to SACP did not attain protection potential levels. However, the galvanic couple Zn‐steel provided enough current for the protection of the steel. Visual inspection of concrete cores extracted from the beams indicated that corrosion products were not present at the steel‐concrete boundary. On the other hand, the ICCP applied to eight concrete beams provided excellent corrosion protection to the steel rebar.
Originality/value
This work revealed that the SACP system (thermally sprayed zinc) works well in high relative humidity environments and can be successfully used to protect steel reinforced concrete structures manufactured with calcareous aggregates which are endemic of the region and commonly used for infrastructure construction in the Yucatán peninsula.

Purpose
Colonies of Actynomyces israelii bacteria have been found in removed copper intra‐uterine devices (IUD) used as a long‐term contraceptive method. The purpose of this paper is to characterize the biofilm developed under anaerobic conditions by Actynomyces israelii on IUD surface, and its influence in the copper corrosion processes.
Design/methodology/approach
The dissolution of copper on the intra‐uterine cavity prevents conception because of the toxic effect of the ions released. Nevertheless, microbiological growths have been detected on the IUD devices retired after long periods of insertion. In order to know about the influence of the biofilm on the corrosion of copper, electrochemical, spectroscopic and surface analysis techniques were applied to study the phenomenon.
Findings
A porous Actynomyces israelii biofilm was formed on the copper IUD surface. The bacteria colony had developed in an exopolimeric substrate, which protects it from the toxic effect of copper ions. The corrosion process was not inhibited by the biofilm, due to the pores present which permit the transport of species through them.
Practical implications
The results of this study show that there is no decay in the contraceptive function of the IUDs due to the presence of a bacterial biofilm on its surface.
Originality/value
The relationship between microbial colonization and the corrosion process of copper IUD under anaerobic conditions was characterized. These results will complement previous investigations performed on the study of corrosion of copper IUDs under different conditions.
