This paper describes the results for magnetic damping in torsional mode (TEAM problem 16). A total of six solutions are presented and compared with experimental results. The problem is treated as a coupled electromagnetomechanical one. In general numerical predictions agree well with experiment.

Abstract

A numerical scheme is proposed to solve double‐diffusive problems using a boundary‐fitted coordinate system to introduce finer grids in the boundary layer regions and an accurate high‐order difference method. Numerical stability is improved by using fourth‐order accurate upwind‐biased differences to approximate the convection terms. The other terms in the governing differential equations are discretized using fourth‐order central difference. To demonstrate the versatility of the boundary‐fitted coordinate system, natural convection in an eccentric annulus is first simulated. The numerical results are consistent with the experimental results by Kuehn and Goldstein and better than the numerical results by Projahn et al. for eccentric cases. Secondly, the symmetry breaking and overturning states in thermohaline‐driven flows in a two‐dimensional rectangular cavity are simulated first to validate the numerical scheme. The numerical results agree well with those by Dijkstra and Molemaker and Quon and Ghil. Finally, the effect of the Lewis number on the flow system is investigated in detail. Depending on the value of the Lewis number, the flow pattern is either stable and symmetric, periodic and oscillatory, or unsymmetric and random.

Abstract

A theoretical study is performed to investigate transport phenomena in channel flows under uniform heating from either both side walls or a single side. The anisotropic t− εt heat‐transfer model is employed to determine thermal eddy diffusivity. The governing boundary‐layer equations are discretized by means of a control volume finite‐difference technique and numerically solved using a marching procedure. It is found that under strong heating from both walls, laminarization occurs as in the circular tube flow case; during the laminarization process, both the velocity and temperature gradients in the vicinity of the heated walls decrease along the flow, resulting in a substantial attenuation in both the turbulent kinetic energy and the temperature variance over the entire channel cross section; both decrease causes a deterioration in heat transfer performance; and in contrast, laminarization is suppressed in the presence of one‐side‐heating, because turbulent kinetic energy is produced in the vicinity of the other insulated wall.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to propose a cooperative adhesion control method for trains with multiple motors electric locomotives. The method is intended to optimize the output torque of each motor, maximize the utilization of train adhesion within the total torque command, reduce the train skidding/sliding phenomenon and achieve optimal adhesion utilization for each axle, thus realizing the optimal allocation of the multi-motor electric locomotives.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, a model predictive control (MPC)-based cooperative maximum adhesion tracking control method for multi-motor electric locomotives is presented. Firstly, train traction system with multiple motors is constructed in accordance with Newton’s second law. These equations include the train dynamics equations, the axle dynamics equations, and the wheel-rail adhesion coefficient equations. Then, a new MPC-based multi-axle adhesion co-optimization method is put forward. This method calculates the optimal output torque through real-time iteration based on the known reference slip speed to achieve multi-axle co-optimization under different circumstances.

Findings

This paper presents a MPC system designed for the cooperative control of multi-axle adhesion. The results indicate that the proposed control system is able to optimize the adhesion of multiple axles under numerous different conditions and achieve the optimal power distribution based on the reduction of train skidding/sliding.

Originality/value

This study presents a novel cooperative adhesion tracking control scheme. It is designed for multi-motor electric locomotives, which has rarely been studied before. And simulations are carried out in different conditions, including variable surfaces and motor failing.

Abstract

Purpose

There is strong excitement during Ponzi schemes and financial bubble periods. This emotion causes investors to turn to “unknown and new investment instruments”. This study, the factors that made “unknown and new investment instruments” preferable to “known and experienced investment instruments” were investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

It was taken into account unconscious like phantasy, emotional like emotional intelligence, both affective and cognitive like financial literacy and subjective beliefs like trust and overconfidence. In addition, risk preferences were measured with four different risk variables. In this context, data were collected by online survey method between November 2020 and May 2021 with convenience sampling. First, the data were collected from 832 participants in the pilot study. Additional data were also collected using convenience sampling and online surveys, and a total of 1,692 participants were obtained. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 25 and AMOS 24.

Findings

As a result of the analyses made, the variables that lead investors to choose “unknown and new investment instruments” were determined as risky investment intention, phantasy, risk taking/risk avoidance, confidence, risk tolerance and subjective financial literacy. Trust and risk perception have a very weak effect on preferences. However, no effect of emotional intelligence and objective financial literacy was detected. In addition, a moderately positive and significant relationship was found between objective and subjective financial literacy. Subjective financial literacy was found to have a strong and significant relationship with emotional intelligence, confidence, trust, risky investment intention and phantasy.

Originality/value

This study investigates the factors underlying individuals' investment preferences from a broad perspective. We think that this study is unique in this structure and wide variables. We believe that the findings obtained in this manner are unique to both academics and practitioners. We also believe that the findings of the study will make an important contribution to understanding participation behavior in various Ponzi schemes and financial bubbles.

Purpose

To investigate two explanations for how variations in social network structure might produce differences in cognitive and perceptual orientation. One explanation is that the extent to which structures lead people to feel strong social bonds encourages holism. The other is that the extent to which a network leads individuals to be concerned about distal network relations leads to holistic thinking.

Methodology

An experimental study in which participants interacted in three-person networks of negotiated (with or without a one-exchange rule), generalized, or productive exchange before being administered the framed-line test, a common measure of cognitive and perceptual orientation.

Findings

Participants in network structures more likely to lead participants to be concerned about what was happening in relationships in the network of which they were not part performed relatively more holistically on the framed-line test. However, these effects did not extend to both modules of the test, and a check on the ordering of networks as reflecting concern with distal network relationships failed.

Research limitations and implications

The experimental design was structured such that only one of the presented explanations could possibly be supported, whereas they both could be correct. Nevertheless, results do indicate that cognitive orientation did respond to variations in network structure.

Value

Explanations for cultural differences typically implicate social structure, although the explanations often cannot be directly tested. Results show that social structure can produce effects that mirror differences thought to reflect profound cultural variations.

Abstract

Growth of nickel tip carbon nanorod by means of pulsed plasma chemical vapor deposition (PPCVD) was carried out at different deposition time. Effects of deposition time under the methane plasma on the growth of carbon nanorod were investigated. The nucleation and growth mechanism of nickel tip carbon nanorod were also discussed. Nanoparticles were formed on substrate to introduce more nucleation sites at an elevated deposition time, and the density of nanorod on the surface of the substrate was greatly increased until the proper methane plasma deposition time. The longest nanorods and the highest nanorods density were found after methane plasma treatment of 3 min and 10 min respectively. Nanorod was about 60 nanometers in diameter and about 550 nanometers in length. Nanorods had onion and V-shape with Ni tip.
