Abstract

Addresses the important question of the optimal share and distribution of primary and hospital care, stating that the end‐user consensus is essential. On a classical medical ground with integrated medical services the care seeking patterns and preferences were investigated in a representative sample of the, hence reasonably unbiased, native population. In a small Cretan township hospital combining secondary and primary care, a questionnaire of habits, perceptions and expectations of health services delivery and provision was distributed to a consecutive visitor sample. Overall, primary care was well and realistically appreciated. In six of the 12 conditions, mostly with fever and/or pain, general practitioners were clearly preferred while in three, as a rule organ‐associated, specialists were the first choice. The consumer‐oriented survey brings additional support to the vital role of primary care in the ongoing health systems development.

Abstract

In 2004, the Faculty of Health Sciences at La Trobe University in Victoria, Australia, introduced a new, final-year subject ‘Interdisciplinary Professional Practice’. The subject is taught to all students enrolled in the 11 allied health and human service disciplines at La Trobe University across metropolitan and rural campuses. The delivery is online to overcome timetabling barriers and to provide time and geographic flexibility. The subject is presented using an enquiry-based learning model. Students are exposed to the concepts of interdisciplinary teamwork through shared learning across professional boundaries to enable a collaborative workforce. An outline of the background development and design of this subject, and its implementation and content areas is presented. A discussion of relevant literature and an analysis of the subject evaluations and focus groups that have guided subject development to enhance student learning over eight cohorts is included.

Abstract

Purpose

Only limited published research is available exploring the lifestyle practices of student nurses. The purpose of this paper is to explore the lifestyle behaviours and exercise beliefs of Irish student nurses.

Design/methodology/approach

A descriptive survey design was used. First‐year and third‐year undergraduate student nurses (n=182) studying at one Irish university participated. Data were collected by administering self‐report questionnaires.

Findings

A total of 20 per cent of the students smoked, 95 per cent consumed alcohol and 19 per cent of the females reported that they exceeded the recommended weekly safe level for alcohol consumption. In total, 73 per cent of the students reported exercising two to five times per week, and walking was the most popular exercise undertaken. The male students reported significantly higher fitness levels and exercised more on a weekly basis than the females. The students identified a range of benefits of and barriers to exercising.

Research limitations/implications

There are a number of study limitations, including: only one university setting was used; a descriptive survey approach was employed; and data were collected using self‐report questionnaires. Further studies need to be conducted with additional data collection methods to explore students' lifestyle and physical activity behaviours.

Practical implications

The university, as a setting for health promotion, must increase awareness, facilitate and encourage student nurses to engage in healthy lifestyle behaviours.

Originality/value

This survey revealed the lifestyle and exercise behaviours of Irish student nurses. Lower levels of smoking and higher levels of physical activity were found amongst these student nurses than those reported elsewhere in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

Interdisciplinary healthcare education and collaboration facilitates healthcare quality improvement (QI). Education challenges include cost, logistics and defining the optimum staff-engaging method. The purpose of this paper is to determine the optimum QI educational model and measure its impact using plan-do-study-act (PDSA) cycles.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors established an on-site interdisciplinary QI learning collaborative: weekly 30-minute learning sessions close to the working environment; a learning materials Twitter repository; and junior doctor-led QI work streams aligned with surgical directorate quality goals supported by a mentorship network. Delivery style (lectures, workshops and QI project reporting) and learning session content was planned weekly using PDSA cycles and modified using participant feedback (score 0-10). All surgical directorate QI work streams were measured before and at nine months.

Findings

From May 2014 to February 2015, there were 32 learning sessions with 266 scores (median 12 weekly, range 5-21). Workshop delivery scored the highest (mean score 9.0), followed by live project reports (mean score 8.8). The surgical QI work streams increased threefold from four to 12, including six junior doctor-led projects.

Practical implications

By proactively acting upon feedback, the authors centralised QI measurement and tailored learning sessions to staff needs. Building sustainability involves continually refining learning curriculum and QI work streams, and expanding the mentorship network.

Originality/value

The collaborative was established at no additional cost. Twitter is used to promote meetings, facilitate conversations and act as a learning repository. The mentorship framework builds QI and coaching expertise.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to contribute theoretical ideas of how peer support workers (PSWs) bring added value to interprofessional learning (IPL) in mental health care teamwork. The question is: How can we theoretically understand the value of PSWs’ expertise for IPL in mental health care teamwork?

Design/methodology/approach

Initially, the authors formulate a hypothesis. Then, the authors describe the focus and context in IPL and PSWs, respectively, and the PSWs’ and mental health professions’ different roles, expertise and perspectives. The authors also refer to some peer provided programs related to IPL. Finally, the authors construct an outline and apply ideas from Wenger’s Communities of Practice (CoP).

Findings

Using CoP, the PSWs as newcomers can by their perspectives change mental health professions’ perspectives and stimulate IPL in teamwork.

Originality/value

The paper gives theoretical insights of how PSWs can facilitate IPL in mental health care teamwork.

Abstract

Purpose

During the Great Recession, the increase in Greece's unemployment rate was the highest in the European Union (EU). However, there exists no multi-variate study which has assessed the association between parental unemployment and adolescents' grades. The present study aimed to examine whether parental unemployment is associated with deterioration in adolescents' grades during periods of economic decline.

Design/methodology/approach

The study utilised panel data from the same upper high schools in the periods 2011–2013 and 2017–2019 to assess whether the grades of adolescents were associated with parental unemployment. A variety of empirical specifications and robustness tests were employed to offer better informed evaluations.

Findings

The exogeneity of parental unemployment with respect to adolescents' grade was confirmed. The analysis revealed that parental unemployment was associated with a decline in adolescents' grades. Periods of economic decline, i.e. in 2011–2013, were found to be associated with deterioration in adolescents' grades. Moreover, during periods of economic decline, parental unemployment was associated with deterioration in adolescents' grades. Furthermore, parental unemployment was associated with lower adolescents' grades for those households that were not homeowners and whose schools were located in working-class areas. The outcomes were found to be robust, even after including information for government expenditure on education and social protection.

Originality/value

This is the first Greek study, and amongst the first international studies, to evaluate whether parental unemployment can lead to a deterioration in adolescents' grades during an economic decline. The potential long-lasting effects of parental unemployment on children's human capital should be considered by policymakers, as should educational interventions to support households experiencing adverse economic conditions.

Abstract

Reports on a study which aimed to initiate a quality assurance process among health care personnel in Sweden. An epidemiological survey concerning treatment of leg ulcers in a defined region in Sweden was conducted and the costs of treating leg ulcers at different levels of care were analysed. The epidemiological survey provided the data necessary to calculate the socio‐economic costs for the treatment of leg ulcers. The weekly cost was found to be about 24 times higher for hospital in‐patients than it was for patients treated at home. The quality assurance process has continued through an interdisciplinary regional consensus conference and the establishment of a consensus programme in the region, with targets and general suggestions for the care and treatment of leg ulcers. To maintain high quality in leg ulcer treatment in the region, an interdisciplinary reference group has been established with members from different clinics at the hospital and members from the primary health care.
