Abstract
Purpose
As the normality concept for frictional dilatant material has a serious drawback, the key feature in this numerical study is that the material here is characterized by elastic-viscoplastic constitutive relation with plastic non-normality effect for two different hardness functions. The paper aims to discuss this issue.
Design/methodology/approach
Quasi-static, mode I plane strain crack tip fields have been investigated for a plastically compressible isotropic hardening–softening–hardening material under small-scale yielding conditions. Finite deformation, finite element calculations are carried out in front of the crack with a blunt notch. For comparison purpose a few results of a hardening material are also provided.
Findings
The present numerical calculations show that crack tip deformation and the field quantities near the tip significantly depend on the combination of plastic compressibility and slope of the hardness function. Furthermore, the consideration of plastic non-normality flow rule makes the crack tip deformation as well as the field quantities significantly different as compared to those results when the constitutive equation exhibits plastic normality.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, analyses, related to the constitutive relation exhibiting plastic non-normality in the context of plastic compressibility and softening (or softening hardening) on the near tip fields, are not explored in the literature.

Learning outcomes
Teaching objective 1: To flourish and explore the current business model to get socioeconomic benefits from organic farming compared to conventional farming; in the context of hill farming. Teaching objective 2: To explore and design innovative entrepreneurship opportunities in the field of organic farming and how these opportunities can be seized by using managerial skills. Teaching objective 3: To analyze the economic benefits of organic farming compared to conventional farming.
Case overview/synopsis
Manj Gaon is a small village in the Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. This village serves as the Uttarakhand Organic Commodity Board’s training facility. Organic farming was the primary source of income for farmers in the late 1970s, but the Green Revolution in India had a negative impact on agriculture, the environment and the economy of the country. After the Green Revolution, the agriculture sector was completely dominated by conventional farming, and the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and insecticides affected the village to some extent. But farmers like Bhagchand Ramola paved the way for other farmers to grow and shine through organic farming. The organic farming model developed by Ramola was helping farmers and society in several aspects, such as the economy, health and the environment. A self-developed organic farming model had been generating fair revenue for the farmers and uplifting their socioeconomic status as compared to conventional farming. Complete adoption of organic farming in the village requires an analysis in terms of sustainable economic growth. However, there was a certain dilemma that was stifling the growth of the newly adopted business model because farmers were dependent only on Japanese buyers and input providers. So, there was a huge need to tie up with other consulates across the country. Secondly, expanding a business model requires more input and output in terms of manpower and revenue, so persuading conventional farmers to adopt the organic farming model was quite a challenge for Ramola.

Abstract
Purpose
This study has been carried out in dairy product manufacturing industry of Northern India to judge the significance of supply chain strategies viz. cost reduction and optimization strategies toward performance improvement and mediator effect of strength and opportunity between strategies and performance parameters.
Design/methodology/approach
Questionnaire survey has been performed to justify their role toward performance improvement. Structural equation modeling, descriptive statistics, hierarchical regression and clusters and partial least square-structural equation modeling has been applied for ascertain the benefits occurred.
Findings
Results indicated that strength (success factors of strength identified from literature) is the significant mediator than opportunity (success factors) for enhancing performance of organization. Small incremental improvements and 5S activities are highly important cost reduction strategies for enhancing performance of supply chain strategies. Supply chain strategies significantly improve the quality of milk in the industry under study. The customer has got high-quality product after implementing supply chain strategies. Right-time delivery of product is only possible if failure modes are analyzed thoroughly. Reliability of performance parameters is 88% which signifies that high benefits are achieved by implementing cost reduction and cost optimization strategies of supply chain concept. Processing of milk is significantly improved after taking combined effect of processing and delivery of product.
Originality/value
This paper helps both academics and managers to gain a better understanding of this question by considering the role of supply chain strategies implementation practically through a standard procedure.

Abstract
Purpose
Although common throughout the world, little is known about the mechanism by which nepotism is associated with employee outcomes. Drawing from social exchange theory, this study examines whether fear-based silence mediates the relationship between nepotism with employee workplace withdrawal and career satisfaction. In addition, whether gender moderates the relationship between nepotism and fear-based silence is also examined.
Design/methodology/approach
Two time-lagged surveys of 330 employees in the Indian banking sector were completed.
Findings
As hypothesized, nepotism was positively related to fear-based silence and employee workplace withdrawal; it was negatively related to career satisfaction. Fear-based silence partially mediated the relationships of nepotism with workplace withdraw and career satisfaction. Gender moderated the relationship between nepotism and fear-based silence.
Practical implications
This study shows the negative impact of nepotism on employee outcomes and suggests means for reducing its prevalence in organizations.
Originality/value
This is the first study to examine fear-based silence as a mediator of nepotism’s relationship with employee workplace withdrawal and career satisfaction. It also answers repeated calls for more research on fear-based silence and its antecedents.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of chicken breeds on quality characteristics of meat nuggets.
Design/methodology/approach
The formulation of meat nuggets prepared from meat of Cobb-400, Vanraja, Aseel and Kadaknath separately consisted of 60 per cent lean meat. The emulsion was prepared by standard method and moulded into nuggets. Cooking was performed under pressure (120°C/15 Psi for 30 min).
Findings
Emulsion and cooked nuggets both showed no significant differences in pH values among the breeds. Higher moisture and fat content was observed in emulsion and nuggets prepared from Cobb-400, while respective protein and ash was maximum in Kadaknath and Vanraja meat-based emulsions and nuggets. The per cent emulsion stability (87.04 ± 0.45) and cooking yield (85.24 ± 0.06) was reported highest in Cobb-400, which indicates the better water holding capacity and suitability of Cobb-400 meat for the development of nuggets at six weeks of age. The mean sensory scores for colour and appearance (7.12 ± 0.28), as well as flavour (7.00 ± 0.04), were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in Cobb-400 nuggets and lowest in Kadaknath (6.21 ± 0.03 and 6.65 ± 0.06). However, no significant differences were noticed in other sensory attributes among treatments.
Research limitations/implications
The fatty acid and amino acid profile analysis may be helpful to understand the original nutritional difference in prepared nuggets.
Practical implications
The study will be off immense help in optimum utilization of meat of locally available chicken breeds for breed-specific and cost-effective product formulations.
Social implications
The products will be acceptable to all commodities because it is made up of chicken meat.

Case overview/synopsis
Apar Gupta co-founded Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF), a digital rights organisation born out of SaveTheInternet – Net Neutrality movement of 2015, credited for urging the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to uphold net neutrality in India. And ban zero-cost internet services that promoted data discrimination in the country. After working on and winning the net neutrality movement, Gupta identified many areas in technology where democratic rights had not been identified or were yet to be clearly defined (like in the case of net neutrality). There was also a service gap between the existing internet volunteer groups and digital rights organisations, which could IFF fill. This was to provide objective clarity, stakeholder identification, handle policy discussions and, most importantly, arrange resources to support movements over the long term. This prompted him to co-found IFF in 2017, which he later joined as a full-time executive director in 2018. IFF worked at the intersection of technology, democratic rights and government policies and was comparable to some global organisations, such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation in the USA and the Open Rights Group in the UK. Still, none existed in India at the time. After four years as a full-time executive director in 2022, he was convinced that it was finally time for him to act on the pre-defined strategic departure plan and work towards succession for the executive director position. While there were visible gaps in the system, Gupta’s leadership design and plans had helped IFF overcome existential challenges in the past. Also, while digital rights were still at a nascent stage in emerging economies, under Gupta’s leadership, IFF had delivered unmatched value to its beneficiaries in the world’s biggest digital consumer market. However, constant changes in regulations and continuing financial constraints made him nervous about the outcomes of the succession and the overall sustainability of IFF. Gupta wanted to ensure that this phased transition from executive director after two years and then trustee manager after the next four years are carefully communicated to reduce the likelihood of attrition and loss of trust.
Being the co-founder and the first and only executive director IFF had seen, the organisation would also require significant skill and competency mapping to identify the new executive leadership. But with no clear internal successor in sight, the non-profit trust would also need a successor who not only was competent but also would share a passion for the type of work done by IFF, its unique delivery mode, and also would openly inherit its position in society. The other alternative strategic routes present were to look for dual leadership or interim leadership, but then there could be concerns about Gupta’s influence overshadowing any such alternative.
In the case scenario, IFF is planning for succession while navigating the organisation through financial constraints and constant regulatory changes to ensure long- and short-term sustainability.
Complexity academic level
The case study has been written to gain insights into departure-defined successive planning in non-profit organisations. The case study can also be used to gain insights into innovative start-ups and innovative non-profit start-ups, as digital rights are still at nascent stages in emerging markets. The case study will be valuable for courses such as human resource management, strategic human resource management, social entrepreneurial leadership, leadership development, start-up environment, innovation and entrepreneurship, public policy, development studies, cyber security and information technology. The case study also allows students and young professionals to take the perspective of an innovative start-up founder and design a departure-defined succession plan. The case study can also be useful for senior students wanting to undertake an entrepreneurial career by starting or joining a non-profit organisation. While the case study is suitable for postgraduate- and executive-level courses, it can also be used for conducting entrepreneurial workshops and skill training.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to develop and empirically validate items on social isolation. The comprehensive literature review of existing studies on the measures of social isolation, loneliness and the related construct was conducted. The paper seeks to conceptualize, validate and present items to measure social isolation.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper is based on theoretical and empirical investigation of the measures of social isolation, loneliness and related constructs such as social others, social loneliness and feeling of sociability. The items were generated through theoretical exploration of previous literature and later modified. The author examined the items through exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and further checked for external criterion validity. Data collected from 128 individuals, in India, were examined to design and validate the scale.
Findings
The finding of the paper is a ten-item social isolation scale. Using structural equation modeling, we have found extraversion and well-being significantly associated with final items in the present study, confirming the external quality of the scale.
Practical implications
Organizations may benefit by close examination of the presence of social isolation in employees along with providing support and assistance to employees so as to reduce negative consequences of social isolation and can address the well-being of the employee.
Originality/value
There is a dearth of developed and validated measures of social isolation in the literature. The study reveals the conceptualization and empirical validation of measures of social isolation in the Indian context so that researchers can move forward to develop theories on social isolation.

Abstract
Purpose
The two-dimensional deformation of a homogeneous, thermally conducting, monoclinic material has been studied by using Laplace and Fourier transforms technique. A linear temperature ramping function is used to more realistically model: thermal loading of the half-space surface. The general solution obtained is applied to a specific problem of a half-space subjected to ramp-type heating and loading. The displacements, stresses and temperature distribution so obtained in the physical domain are computed numerically and illustrated graphically. The comparison for Lord-Shulman (L-S), Green and Lindsay (G–L), Green and Naghdi (G–N) and Chandrasekharaiah and Tzou (CTU) theories have been shown graphically to estimate the effect of ramping parameter of heating for an insulated and temperature gradient boundaries.
Design/methodology/approach
The design of the study is eigenvalue approach
Findings
Homogeneous, thermally conducting monoclinic material has been taken under consideration to study the effect of linear temperature ramping parameter on temperature and normal displacement field. It is observed that magnitude of field quantities is large near the point of application of source for the non-dimensional values of time in all the four models. The numerical values for the field quantities are computed graphically for a wide range of values of finite pulse rise-time in the two situations t0 < t, t0 > t for generalized thermoelasticity theories.
Originality/value
(1) Governing equations for homogeneous, t0 thermally conducting, monoclinic material are described and solved. (2) Eigen value approach is used to solve the problem. (3) The effect of ramping parameter of heating has been studied for various models of the thermoelasticity to show the comparision between them.
