Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to develop an analytical approach to evaluate the influence of material uncertainties on cross‐sectional stiffness properties of thin walled composite beams.
Design/methodology/approach
Fuzzy arithmetic operators are used to modify the thin‐walled beam formulation, which was based on a mixed force and displacement method, and to obtain the uncertainty properties of the beam. The resulting model includes material uncertainties along with the effects of elastic couplings, shell wall thickness, torsion warping and constrained warping. The membership functions of material properties are introduced to model the uncertainties of material properties of composites and are determined based on the stochastic behaviors obtained from experimental studies.
Findings
It is observed from the numerical studies that the fuzzy membership function approach results in reliable representation of uncertainty quantification of thin walled composite beams. The propagation of uncertainties is also demonstrated in the estimation of structural responses of composite beams.
Originality/value
This work demonstrates the use of fuzzy approach to incorporate uncertainties in the responses analytically, in turn improving computational efficiency drastically as compared to the Monte‐Carlo method.

This study aims to investigate the effects of mass and stiffness imbalance in a tail rotor induced by damage in forward flight.
Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the effects of mass and stiffness imbalance in a tail rotor induced by damage in forward flight.
Design/methodology/approach
An aeroelastic analysis based on finite element in space and time and capable of modeling dissimilar blades is carried out to study the effect of damage occurring in one, two, and three blades in a four‐bladed tail rotor system in forward flight. The effect of damage growth on vibratory hub loads and blade responses is studied using a comprehensive aeroelastic code.
Findings
The diagnostic chart which is the summary of damage analysis of tail rotor shows that the root hub vibration spectrum gives enough indication to predict damage growth in the tail rotor blade. Hence, this can be useful towards development of health monitoring system for tail rotor blades.
Originality/value
The proposed analysis helps in understanding the basic physics behind the damaged tail rotor and also gives qualitative assessment of damaged tail rotor where obtaining the flight test data with damaged tail rotor is difficult.

Abstract
The studies focusing on inbound logistics in the automobile industry have been limited because of the relatively small portion of logistics cost. But now it is recognized as one of the critical factors for efficient execution of supply chain management (SCM). The survey of suppliers in the automobile industry conducted in this study indicated significant relationships among logistics performance, logistics outsourcing, and performance evaluation level. This research is three-fold. First, current status of part supplier's logistics was analyzed by interviews with inbound logistics providers and suppliers. Second, management type of logistics was analyzed. There were three kinds of logistics -two kinds of logistics outsourcing and direct control by the supplier. Each type of logistics management showed differences about performance. Third, logistics performance evaluation and its relation with the actual logistics performance were presented. Comparable performance evaluation factors were selected, and it is shown that they had a correlation with actual performance.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to develop a method for defining and categorizing upper lateral somatotypes for clothing size systems used for clothing pattern creation based on directional angles of 3D space vectors.
Design/methodology/approach
3D data for 317 men in their twenties obtained from the fifth Size Korea survey were used in this study. Standard landmarks and surfaces were set on the 3D shapes, and six space vector angles of the lateral form were defined and measured. Relationships among the measurement results were clarified, and the results were compared with those obtained using existing classifying methods.
Findings
The measurement of the defined directional angles indicated that the swayback type and bend-forward type had the two extreme values, and the straight type was between the two values. The analysis of the correlation between six directional angles indicated that some points in the lower area of the upper body had a high correlation with other points in the lower area.
Researchlimitations/implications
The subjects of this study were limited to lateral somatotypes, and there is a need for future studies that focus on frontal somatotypes. This research is confined to the upper lateral somatotypes of men in their twenties. Further study is needed to extend the results of this study to other body types such as those of elderly and overweight persons.
Practical implications
Major angle measurements quantified by the somatotypes can be specifically reflect in developing and revised to the right patterns which is spread body shell replica or individual pattern for MTM.
Social implications
This objective somatotype analysis method can be involved in determining individual body somatotype of ordermade clothes or can provided the accurate information interactively to MTM automatic customized pattern making system.
Originality/value
Accurate measurements of size, shape, and posture were applied and characterized to realize the process. Accuracy was improved compared to existing 2D analysis methods through three-dimensional analysis using directional space vector angles based on 3D forms.

Abstract
The maritime freight transportation industry has played an important role in the Korean economy. The Korean maritime freight transportation industry is faced with a period of transforming it competitively and efficiently in this global age. This paper, therefore, aims to identify the impact of the maritime freight transportation industry in the Korean national economy. Hence, this paper provides policy-makers with accessible and reliable information regarding the role of the Korean maritime freight transportation industry. This study employs input-output (I-O) analysis to examine the role of the maritime freight transportation industry in the national economy for the period 1995-2003, with specific application to Korea. This study pays particular attention to the maritime freight transportation industry by taking the industry as exogenous variable and then investigates its economic impacts. We identify inter-industry linkage effects in 20 sectors, production-inducing effects, added value-inducing effects, and supply-shortage effects of the maritime freight transportation industry.

Abstract
The issue of the reunification of North and South Korea attracted worldwide attention in June 2000, when the historic summit meeting between the two top Korean leaders was held in North Korea. Although recently the two Koreas have stepped up their efforts toward reconciliation, international scholars and researchers in Korean studies seem to agree that Korean reunification will be slow and difficult. For this reason, they are researching possible solutions to the critical problems involved, and thus there has been an upsurge of published materials on reunification. This annotated bibliography aims to serve as a guide to these materials. Although this bibliography is selective in that it is limited to literature published in English since 1996, it has wide content coverage and includes books, journals, government publications, special reports, research papers, and Websites. Given the complicated and dynamic situation in Korea, this bibliography will be of use to those who are concerned with Korean reunification.

Abstract
Recent advancements in information and communication technologies have led to the rapid growth of electronic commerce market. In the United States, e-commerce retail sales for 2002 reached $45.6 billion, indicating an increase of 26.9% from 2001 while total retail sales increased 3.1% during the same period. Although e-commerce sales account for only 1.4% of total sales in this country, forecasts show that the magnitude of digital economy will continue to expand. The logistical requirements of e-commerce goods that extend to each customer's address stimulate greater complexity in traditional supply chain management, potentially causing higher costs for freight supply chain participants. To harness the economic potential of e-commerce, it is important to encourage the development of a freight transportation system that will support its steady growth, while avoiding the possible negative effects from the changes in freight transportation. Due to the intrinsic nature of e-commerce goods, advances in home delivery have the potential to promote the growth of e-commerce as well as to create sustainable urban freight transportation systems. Based on the case study of the United States, this paper presents an in-depth discussion of the key challenges arising in home delivery operations, and proposes potential solution strategies that will lead to more efficient and reliable home delivery systems.

Abstract
Unlike the building forms, technology, and materials of today, the traditional Korean architecture represents an example of flexible building forms in history. Investigating and studying this type of architecture not only can contribute to the reform of architectural history by understanding how ordinary buildings change over time and how they interact with people but also may suggest the possibility of, and methodology for developing long-lasting and sustainable mass housing in Korea and in Asian cities. The first part of the paper demonstrates the structural, spatial, and functional flexibilities of traditional Korean architecture. The second part investigates the construction system, including the organization of builders and the regulations governing the relationship with the residents. Its systematic construction approach is associated with the specialization of construction and standardization and prefabrication of elements, facilitating the easy replacement and reuse of building materials. The paper is based on a research methodology of integrating historical archives and case studies. The main argument posited here is that knowledge and skill of traditional construction of flexibility suggest conceptual strategies to improve current housing design and construction in order to obtain a sustainable future.
