Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present comfort properties of bamboo-silk and cotton-silk Kota Doria fabrics.

Design/methodology/approach

Two types of Kota Doria fabrics were manufactured: one from the mixture of silk and bamboo yarns and the other from the mixture of cotton and silk yarns. Air permeability, thermal resistance and moisture management properties were determined.

Findings

Air permeability of bamboo-silk fabric was higher than that of cotton-silk fabric, whereas thermal resistance was less. Moisture management of both the fabrics was almost the same.

Abstract

Purpose

The development of new communication technology such as 5G is now a solid choice for Industry 4.0. 5G in the fifth generation replaces the presently used mobile telecommunications networks. In every sector of modern life, this technology is designed to resolve the issue of the enormous rise in daily gadgets. 5G allows rapid data transfer and significantly improves the Internet of Things (IoT), which contains billions of devices. The purpose of this paper is to study the potential applications of 5G for Industry 4.0.

Design/methodology/approach

Relevant research publications from Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar were identified to accomplish the objectives of this paper. 5G for Industry 4.0 enables crucial communications such as wireless management of machines and robotics to unleash Industry 4.0’s full potential, including the considerable proliferation of IoT devices in 5G. This technology enhances quality control, increasing inspections that rely on real-time analysis for rapid and early detection.

Findings

In Industry 4.0, 5G technology provides high speed and flexibility connectivity which helps to enhance the entire manufacturing system. This paper briefs about 5G and different network technologies used in 5G. Advancements, associated features and specialties, and significant enablers of 5G for Industry 4.0 are discussed. Finally, the paper identifies and discusses eighteen 5G applications for Industry 4.0. 5 G-enabled robots are used in manufacturing to carry out extensive work to enhance connectivity.

Originality/value

5G is the next-generation communication technology, allowing numerous examples of inventive usage, including Industry 4.0. In line with its long-term vision of digitisation, 5G benefit the whole value chain, including consumers and businesses.

Abstract

Purpose

Industry 4.0 refers to the interconnection of cyber-physical systems, which connects the physical and digital worlds by collecting digital data from physical objects/processes, and using this data to drive automation and optimisation. Digital technologies used in this revolution gather and handle massive volumes of high-velocity streams while automating field operations and supply chain activities. Cybersecurity is a complicated process that helps sort out various hacking issues of Industry 4.0. This purpose of this paper is to provide an overview on cybersecurity and its major applications for Industry 4.0.

Design/methodology/approach

The rise of Industry 4.0 technologies is changing how machines and associated information are obtained to evaluate the data contained within them. This paper undertakes a comprehensive literature-based study. Here, relevant research papers related to cybersecurity for Industry 4.0 are identified and discussed. Cybersecurity results in high-end products, with faster and better goods manufactured at a lesser cost.

Findings

Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, internet of things, robots and cybersecurity are being introduced to improve the Industry 4.0 environment. In the starting, this paper provides an overview of cybersecurity and its advantages. Then, this study discusses technologies used to enhance the cybersecurity process. Enablers, progressive features and steps for creating a cybersecurity culture for Industry 4.0 are discussed briefly. Also, the research identified the major cybersecurity applications for Industry 4.0 and discussed them. Cybersecurity is vital for better data protection in many businesses and industrial control systems. Manufacturing is getting more digitised as the sector embraces automation to a more significant level than ever before.

Originality/value

This paper states about Industry 4.0 and the safety of multiple business process systems through cybersecurity. A significant issue for Industry 4.0 devices, platforms and frameworks is undertaken by cybersecurity. Digital transformation in the Industry 4.0 era will increase industrial competitiveness and improve their capacity to make optimum decisions. Thus, this study would give an overview of the role of cybersecurity in the effective implementation of Industry 4.0.

Abstract

Purpose

Unmanned aerial vehicles are commonly known as UAVs and drones. Nowadays, industries have begun to realise the operational and economic benefits of drone-enabled tasks. The Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, drones, etc., represent implementable advanced technologies intended to accomplish Industry 4.0. The purpose of this study is to discuss the significant contributions of drones for Industry 4.0.

Design/methodology/approach

Nowadays, drones are used for inspections, mapping and surveying in difficult or hazardous locations. For writing this paper, relevant research papers on drone for Industry 4.0 are identified from various research platforms such as Scopus, Google Scholar, ResearchGate and ScienceDirect. Given the enormous extent of the topic, this work analyses many papers, reports and news stories in an attempt to comprehend and clarify Industry 4.0.

Findings

Drones are being implemented in manufacturing, entertainment industries (cinematography, etc.) and machinery across the world. Thermal-imaging devices attached to drones can detect variable heat levels emanating from a facility, trigger the sprinkler system and inform emergency authorities. Due partly to their utility and adaptability in industrial areas such as energy, transportation, engineering and more, autonomous drones significantly impact Industry 4.0. This paper discusses drones and their types. Several technological advances and primary extents of drones for Industry 4.0 are diagrammatically elaborated. Further, the authors identified and discussed 19 major applications of drones for Industry 4.0.

Originality/value

This paper’s originality lies in its discussion and exploration of the capabilities of drones for Industry 4.0, especially in manufacturing organisations. In addition to improving efficiency and site productivity, drones can easily undertake routine inspections and check streamlines operations and maintenance procedures. This work contributes to creating a common foundation for comprehending Industry 4.0 outcomes from many disciplinary viewpoints, allowing for more research and development for industrial innovation and technological progress.

Abstract

Purpose

Over the past few decades, lean manufacturing has focussed on being customer-centred and now Lean 4.0 technologies have made it possible for manufacturers to have a deeper view of waste reduction. Technologies such as the internet of things, artificial intelligence, three-dimensional printing, robotics, real-time data, cloud computing, predictive analytics and augmented reality, are helpful to achieve Lean 4.0. This study aims to develop the conceptual understanding of Lean 4.0, related tools and linkage with Industry 4.0. Further, it provides the strategies for implementing Lean 4.0, developing lean culture and highlights the Lean 4.0 application in the manufacturing context.

Design/methodology/approach

This study relates to Lean 4.0 and its technologies. Prominent research is identified through Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar and studied as per the objective of this study. This lean revolution provides customers desire for personalisation, connectedness, high-quality and valuable products. Lean 4.0 provides valuable information on the value chain and production process. This revolution has significantly impacted refining production processes for a greater level of adaptability and cost reduction.

Findings

This paper is brief about Lean 4.0 and its capabilities for the reduction of waste. The authors discussed different tools used in Lean 4.0 and its relationship with Industry 4.0. The classical strategies and progressive features of Lean 4.0 for overall enhancing the manufacturing sphere are discussed diagrammatically. Finally, it identified and discussed 14 significant applications of Lean 4.0 for manufacturing industries.

Originality/value

This study provides a comprehensive understanding of Lean 4.0 and related tools and strategies that help the upcoming manufacturing industries.

Abstract

The effect that the image of the fashion model had on consumer perceptions of a product was explored. An image of models typically found in fashion advertisements (mainstream models) and three different images of fashion models (older, larger and African‐American peripheral models) which were less frequently used in fashion advertisements, were presented as the stimulus. Stimulus photographs and the Perception of Advertisement Scale were used to investigate the impressions consumers formed toward the model. Hypotheses 1, 2 and 3 were partially accepted. Results revealed that: (1) mainstream and African‐American models were rated far more favourably for attractiveness; (2) the product (a pair of gold earrings) was thought to reflect the personality of older, larger and African‐American models but not the mainstream model (respondents tended to be indifferent to the product); and (3) respondents tended to find the older model more credible than other models. Implications for peripheral market segments are given.

Abstract

Bengali sports history features very few women; some examples include enquiry into the representation of women in cricket stadiums as spectators (Naha, 2021) and the history of physical education in a women’s college (Bhattacharya, 2009). Likewise, young adult sports fiction in Bengali hardly engages with girls, with the notable exception of Moti Nandi’s Kalabati novels. This series of nine novels features the eponymous character as a high school student and a cricketer between 1984 and 2005. Belonging to a zamindar family, it is the possession of cultural capital post-abolishment of the zamindari system which allows Kalabati to play cricket. Situating the novel amidst India’s entry into neoliberalism, this chapter employs close reading to examine the ways adopted by the protagonist to manoeuvre new gender roles in conjunction with traditionally ascribed ones. Kalabati’s participation in a sport and a range of physical activities dominated by men goes against the societal codes prescribed for women. Despite that, masquerade and performativity allow Kalabati to assert her agency. Through alternately impersonating men and performing hyper-femininity, she effortlessly adjusts herself to different bodies, etiquettes and markers of gender identity. The fluidity in gender identities and emphasis on performance opens up the straitjacketed discussions around the former. This chapter argues that Kalabati’s exceptionality as a sportsperson is both an embodied and a genealogical trait.

Abstract

Purpose

As the number of web applications is increasing day by day web mining acts as an important tool to extract useful information from weblogs and analyse them according to the attributes and predict the usage of a website. The main aim of this paper is to inspect how process mining can be used to predict the web usability of hotel booking sites based on the number of users on each page, and the time of stay of each user. Through this paper, the authors analyse the web usability of a website through process mining by finding the web usability metrics. This work proposes an approach to finding the usage of a website using the attributes available in the weblog which predicts the actual footfall on a website.

Design/methodology/approach

PROM (Process Mining tool) is used for the analysis of the event log of a hotel booking site. In this work, authors have used a case study to apply the PROM (process mining tool) to pre-process the event log dataset for analysis to discover better-structured process maps than without pre-processing.

Findings

This article first provided an overview of process mining, then focused on web mining and later discussed process mining techniques. It also described different target languages: system nets (i.e. Petri nets with an initial and a final state), inductive miner and heuristic miner, graphs showing the change in behaviour of the dataset and predicting the outcome, that is the webpage having the maximum number of hits.

Originality/value

In this work, a case study has been used to apply the PROM (process mining tool) to pre-process the event log dataset for analysis to discover better-structured process maps than without pre-processing.

Abstract

Purpose

Technology-based collaborative learning (TBCL) is the manner in which students can use technological tools and digital platforms to share knowledge and learn collaboratively. It can help increase students’ participation, motivation and achievement due to the stimulating teaching environment. The study intends to examine the effect of TBCL on students’ competency-based education (CBE).

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire as quantitative data gathering tool is employed in this correlational study. This study used purposive sampling which is done on undergraduate university students (N = 187) in order to accomplish the goal. The data are analyzed using the SPSS software (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 27.0.

Findings

The findings of this study indicate the strong positive association between the TBCL and students’ CBE with the correlation coefficient value 0.993. Hence, the null hypothesis is rejected, and alternative hypothesis of this study is accepted.

Practical implications

The findings will provide valuable insights that will help educators, policymakers, industry partners and researchers better prepare students for the demands of the digital age and improve the quality of education by identifying successful strategies for integrating technology into collaborative learning environments.

Originality/value

This study is unique because it synthesizes and analyzes previous research to look at the particular context of TBCL and how it affects students' CBE in higher education institution in Sindh that was not previously investigated.

Abstract

Purpose

Against the backdrop of an Indian banking sector that finds itself entangled in the triple deadlock of increasing competition, technological changes and strict regulatory compliance, the study aims to examine the need for reinforcing stringent corporate and risk governance mechanisms as an instrument for improving efficiency and productivity levels.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors construct three separate indices, namely, supervisory board index, audit index and risk governance index to measure the governance practices of commercial banks. A slacks-based data envelopment analysis technical efficiency (TE) measure, a variable returns to scale cost efficiency model and Malmquist productivity index are employed to determine TE, cost efficiency and productivity change, respectively. A two-step system-generalized method of moments estimation accounts for the dynamic relationship between governance and efficiency.

Findings

The authors show that strict audit and risk governance mechanisms are associated with better efficiency and productivity levels. However, consistent with the free-rider hypothesis, large, independent and diverse boards lead to cost inefficiencies. Strict risk governance structures circumvent the negative effects of high regulatory capital and improve efficiency and total factor productivity. However, friendly boards do not perform efficiently in the presence of regulatory capital, implying that incentives arising from maintaining high levels of equity capital make them more susceptible to risk-taking, and board composition is unable to sidestep this behaviour.

Originality/value

The paper contributes to the literature that explores the linkages between governance, efficiency and productivity. The inferences hold relevance in the post-COVID world, as regulators try to circumvent the additional stress on the banking system by adopting sound corporate and risk governance mechanisms.
