Abstract
Purpose
ß-thalassemia is a hereditary disorder due to mutation in the ß-globin gene on chromosome 11. Out of 200 known ß-globin gene chain mutations recognized, it is better to identify the most common mutation in specific regions and ethnicity for cost-effective molecular diagnosis of this disorder. Therefore, this study aims to practice multiplex-amplification refractory mutation system (ARMS) PCR on patients with thalassemia in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) to investigate the most common mutations in the ß-globin chain gene.
Design/methodology/approach
Twenty-two individuals (patients, their parents and non-affected siblings) with signed consent were studied from six consanguineous families of ß-thalassemia. Blood samples were collected for DNA isolation. For the detection of mutations in the ß-globin gene, ARMS-PCR was used. The amplicon was visualized through 2% Agarose Gel.
Findings
The most common mutations among different ethnic groups in the study area residents were Fr 8-9 (+G) and IVS 1-5 (G> C). The prominent enhancing factors for ß-thalassemia are inter-family marriages and lack of awareness.
Practical implications
Multiplex ARMS_PCR is the most valuable technique for assessing multiple mutations in a single reaction tube.
Social implications
Due to extensively found ethnic and regional variations and a high rate of consanguinity, the Pashtun population has a great risk of mutations in their genome. Therefore, ARMS-PCR is a cost-effective mutational diagnostic strategy that can help to control disease burden.
Originality/value
Limited studies using ARMS-PCR for mutational analysis in the ß-globin gene are conducted. This study is unique as it targeted consanguineous families of KP Pakistan.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to address double stratification and activation energy in flow of tangent hyperbolic fluid. Flow is induced by non-linear stretching sheet of variable thickness. Heat flux by Cattaneo–Christov theory is implemented.
Design/methodology/approach
Non-linear system is computed for the convergent solutions. Attention is particularly focused to the velocity, temperature and concentration.
Findings
It is found that temperature and thermal layer thickness are decreased for larger stratification.
Originality/value
In view of aforementioned communication, the aim of the present study is fourfold: First, to inspect stagnation point flow of tangent hyperbolic liquid by a stretched sheet; second, to discuss effect of non-Fourier heat flux and double stratification; third, to investigate activation energy; and fourth, to examine variable thickness effect.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the Sutterby fluid flow by a rotating disk with homogeneous-heterogeneous reactions. Inspection of heat transfer is through Cattaneo–Christov model. Stratification effect is also considered.
Design/methodology/approach
Nonlinear equations are solved by the homotopy technique.
Findings
Sutterby fluid flow by rotating disk is not considered yet. Here the authors intend to analyze it with Cattaneo–Christov heat flux and homogeneous-heterogeneous reactions. Thermal stratification is also taken into consideration.
Originality/value
No such work is yet done in the literature.

This paper aims to explore the study of magnetohydrodynamic viscous fluid flow past on a stretching cylinder with nonlinear thermal radiation having gyrotactic microorganisms.
Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to explore the study of magnetohydrodynamic viscous fluid flow past on a stretching cylinder with nonlinear thermal radiation having gyrotactic microorganisms.
Design/methodology/approach
Appropriate transformations reduce the nonlinear partial differential equation to ordinary ones. Subsequent nonlinear equations are calculated to get convergent series solutions.
Findings
Fluid velocity declines for elevating values of magnetic field parameter. For larger values of curvature parameter near the cylinder temperature reduces.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, magnetohydrodynamic boundary layer flow of viscous fluid by nonlinear stretching cylinder with nonlinear thermal radiation having gyrotatic microorganisms is not studied yet. The purpose is to study this.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the flow characteristics of Ree–Eyring fluid between two rotating disks. The characteristics of heat transfer are discussed in presence of viscous dissipation, heat source/sink and nonlinear radiative heat flux.
Design/methodology/approach
Nonlinear flow expressions lead to ordinary ones through adequate similarity transformations. The ordinary differential system has been tackled through optimal homotopic method. The impact of different flow variables on the velocity field, entropy generation rate and temperature fields is graphically discussed. The surface drag force and heat transfer rate are numerically examined via various pertinent parameters.
Findings
By minimization of values of stretching parameter and Brinkman number, the entropy generation rate can be controlled. The entropy generation rate enhances for higher values of magnetic parameter, while the Bejan number is decreased via magnetic parameter.
Originality/value
No such work is yet published in the literature.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to address the flow features of Ree–Eyring fluid between two rotating disks subject to the magnetic field. Heat transfer features are discussed through viscous dissipation and nonlinear thermal radiation. Impact of thermophoresis and Brownian movement are elaborated. Physical characteristics of entropy generation optimization in nanofluid with homogeneous and heterogeneous chemical reaction are discussed.
Design/methodology/approach
The nonlinear system leads to ordinary one through the implementation of adequate transformation and then tackled analytically for a convergent series solution by homotopy analysis method.
Findings
The prime objective of the present research has been given to investigate entropy generation in Ree–Eyring fluid flow between two rotating disks subjected to the magnetic field. Vital features, namely, Brownian motion and thermophoresis have been addressed. Total entropy rate is computed using the second law of thermodynamics.
Originality/value
No such work yet exists in the literature.
